  1. Indi sits on our feet when we're working in the kitchen. Right up next to the cupboards. Makes it difficult when you need to get into the cupboard but is very cute!
  2. Hi Thanks for the replies. We have a doggy door so it's not a case of being unable to access the outside and I think I may put newspaper down - much easier to clean up! I'll clean the laundry floor with vinegar & bicarb this weekend. I don't think she's got an UTI - but I will keep an eye on her just in case. I work all day so it's a bit difficult to monitor their behaviour at this time of the year (when they just want to snuggle down in front of the heater after their evening walk). This morning I went down early to let them in, and before I let them into the house I encouraged Indi to go outside, which she was very reluctant to do (it was 5.30am so I can't blame her) and so I gave up. The dogs then snuggled with me and I put them in the laundry when I left so I'll be interested to see if she went outside after that. Thanks everyone for your input. Cheers Jane
  3. Hi My 16 month old spayed female staffy puppy/juvenile has decided that it is OK to pee in the laundry. She is housetrained but with the recent wet weather I think she didn't want to go out in the rain (and we've had some really heavy rain) to do her business and so started going in the laundry. The dogs sleep & eat in there as well and we've managed to stop her going in the morning by putting a food bowl directly in front of the bed so that's what she smells when she gets up. However this evening she peed directly next to her food bowl, right in front of their bed. Being the laundry the floor is tiled, however I'm looking for suggestions on how I can thoroughly clean the floor this weekend and so discourage this behaviour. Obviously I clean up the messes but I use Method brand household cleaners and I'm thinking I need something with a bit more oomph. I don't want to put newspaper down as this may normalise the behaviour, but I'm thinking that might be easiest throughout winter. Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks Jane

  6. Well, she has sailed through the surgery beautifully and I have a happy puppy once again! I am so thankful that the vet saw the urgency and acted on it.
  7. My beautiful 6 month old staffy Indigo Georgia is today having (what is for all accounts & purposes emergency) surgery to correct her incorrectly diagnosed entropic eyelids. Poor thing. She's had ulcers for a week now with no improvement. Fortunately I tracked down a vet whose specialty is eye ailments, and who took one look and just about hit the roof. I did ask my vet (who I really like BTW) if I should consult with this specialist & the recommendation had been lets wait & see but today after the morning consult I decided to go ahead & see the specialist anyway. Thankfully they slotted me in as an emergency. Poor Indi - she was spayed last week and also has a manky ear so it's all been a bit of a bad week.
  8. Hi Next week we are flying from Perth to Qld to pick up our new puppy. Initially the plan was to have a week's holiday at my in-laws farm and then pick the pup up, get on the plane and fly home. However there has been a change of plans and now we will be picking the pup up when we fly into Qld and the travelling to the farm and then travelling home a week later. I am extremely concerned about the pup picking up parvo and want to know what people would advise to minimise the risk of this happening. I have no idea how we will toilet the pup whilst we're travelling as it will want to explore its environment and I feel that places where we stop to let him (eg parking areas) out will be high risk areas. There is no way the breeder can hold on to the pup (they are going away) so that is not an option. Could the pup receive a parvo shot this weekened (I would have to ask the breeder to arrange this)? The pup is now 8 weeks old. Thanks for your help. Jane
  9. The first two steps are all good in theory but when your dog is choking you have to act fast. When Sam was a pup he started to choke on a bit of something he was chewing on (I forget what it was). I gave him a couple of pumps around his middle (just below his ribs) with my hands and out popped the offending bit of stuff. Crisis over!
  10. Have just finished cleaning up Sam's kennel - airing the bedding mainly as it didn't flood, even though it's right next to a downpipe - and Sam's outside toybox (an old washing basket which I will now drill some holes in so it becomes self draining). I couldn't believe how many toys were in there! Time for a cull! We had our internal water feature come to life again. I think we will be pulling up our upstairs deck to recaulk everything, but there's not much we can do about the gutters overflowing because they can't deal with huge cloudbursts (other than putting wider gutters in). Very sad news about the windows at Winthrop Hall.
  11. My lovely Sam (nearly 2 year old staffy), who is scared of the wind and cars when we're walking, sailed through this afternoon's massive storm. Thankfully thunder and lightning don't both him one jot. I was a bit scared, though, particularly when the bang was right on the heels of the bang! Fantastic to hear the sound of rain after so long. Cheers!
  12. Good on you for training in public. If only more people did it. We often do sit/down + stay/wait with Sam + heeling work otherwise how else do you train your dog to obey your commands in unfamiliar surroundings?
  13. Change to a raw diet. Sam has goat / lamb / chicken (because he's allergic to beef) plus sweet potato (cooked). I've also given him spinach with his dinner and have been advised that broccoli & cauliflower would also be good. He gets a pinch of kelp powder most nights + fish oil caps. He has a bone 3 x per week and I vary what he has - chicken frames, goat shanks, lamb shanks, goat knuckles, mutton necks. No farting. No bad breath. Lovely poos! (He had terrible poos on the dry he was originally on). Good luck!
  14. You're lucky that Willow doesn't have food allergies added to the mix. We've been treating our staffy (who has food + plant + other allergies) for about a year now and have seen good results from the desensitisation shots. He also has a daily antihistamine (cetrizine) + fish oil which helps the antihistamine somehow. We're without pet insurance either, thank goodness we don't have kids so we can justify the expense
  15. If it was my dog having teeth extracted I'd want him to have adequate pain relief. Stupid vets not to listen to what the client wants.
  16. One of my Vizsla had the worst contact and food allergies going! Got so bad he was raw everywhere and would rub his face on concrete till he bled! Did those injected prick tests and he was allergic to beef ,chicken, every green thing known to man, dust mites, household ingredients in cleaners you name it. He was on prednisone and anti-biotics alot! I went prey model raw. 80% meat,10 % edible bone and 10 % offal of which 5 % is liver. After detox which took about a month, your dog may be going through detox symptoms when she is scratching, have you thought of that? He is now100 % fine, can run through grass and eats anything he is given without a reaction! I just thought to hell with it and on advice from other raw feeders I started him on chicken (raw-they said unlikely he would react as the grains were the problem in his dry,not raw),like breast bone in,which is still too much bone but an o.k place to start. Did a week on that and added some gizzards and chicken liver, fine on that so went to beef then some beef heart and some beef liver over the next week to 10 days with chicken meals in between, then lamb, then pork, then rabbit etc etc. All this took about 6 weeks ,he scratched most of this but it got less. I bathed him in diluted Gold Listerine to keep him from reinfecting his skin... Anyway 6 months down the track I have a prefect dog who can run through long grass eat anything and looks amazing. Apart from his grey muzzle,he is 8,he has the body of a 3 year old and the energy level of one too! If she was my dog I would give it a shot, can't be any worse than she is now. I know my boy was a mess for the first few weeks and then it just got gradually less... Oh and adding yoghurt and veggies is a no no in my book. They are sugar and dogs don't need sugar..just like a horse can eat bark but it's not exatcly meant to is it. But if that's all on offer they would eat it so as not to starve. So try 80% meat,10 % edible bone and 10% offal of which 5 % is liver. So in conclusion based on a dermatologists findings my boy WAS highly allergic to everything but I went through things step by step and alot of his scratching after going prey model was detox as the allergens escaped his body. All you can do in that situation is try to ease them through it. Oh and TRY not to freak out,my dog was red raw everywhere and had scabs and bled after scratching,so it can work! I wish you the best of luck. I've got an allergic staffy who's on camel & sweet potato and is currently on sequential challenges (we've just tried an hypo-allergenic dry food which he reacted to so the next thing to try is corn to totally rule that out as I'm pretty sure that's the culprit). I agree about waiting until any reaction disappears and leaving a good gap before the next challenge. We're under an animal dermatologist, rather than the vet. What quantities are you talking about (the weight of your dog & the weight of the food would be good). I'd like to try a no vege diet as I'm sick of cooking sweet potatoes! Thanks
  17. My 14 month old stafffy currently has kennel cough. I took him to the vet after his first coughing fit so they were able to dispense some cough mixture when he started coughing earnest. He's under house arrest for 2 weeks at least and is feeling pretty sorry for himself. Yes it can be very serious. Fortunately I only work 5 mins away so can pop home during the day to check on him.
  18. If you are using a doggy door then just do that - no need for a crate as well (just out of interest why do you think you'd need a crate as well?) We have this set up at home. Sam has a bed in the laundry and a kennel outside & can come & go whenever he wants. The initial challenge is training them to use their doggy door which I started doing about day 3 - before that I was walking him out the open door to toilet. A few treats was all it took! Cheers Jane
  19. You need to cook the sweet potato and then mash it otherwise it doesn't get properly digested. (My staffie is on camel & sweet potato). We also give him an antihistamine: cetrizine hydrochloride 10mg (c-zine) + fish oil caps (which help the efficacy of the antihistamine). We were also advised to get rid of any foam bedding so Sam sleeps on a couple of towels in his bed and has towels in his kennel. I wash the towels weekly and put eucalyptus oil in the final rinse. This was to reduce the incidence of dust mites.
  20. Is it just frozen raw camel and sweet potato? Im slightly excited if it is - I didnt know you could get that from City Farmers! I have wanted to try Camel for my dogs but cant find anywhere close that has it I get my camel from a pet supply shop in Oxford Street in Mt Hawthorn. I didn't know City Farmers have it - I'll have to investigate next time I go.
  21. We have an allergic English staffy. Fortunately our vet referred us to a local dermatology clinic after he'd been there a couple of times with bad ears & general itchiness so we've been receiving expert care since he was 8 months old (he's nearly one now). We had Sam on Hills Science Diet and it was the worst thing we could have done. He pooed heaps (he's now doing 2 per day - one after each meal) rather than what felt like 22 per day. The first thing the clinic did was to put him on an elimination diet which uses a protein he had never been introduced to (camel) plus carbohydrate as a filler (Sweet potato). Initially I brought pre-prepared but it was really expensive & now we buy the camel in 1kg packs I buy sweet potato in bulk (I'm sure the people at the local fruit & veg place think I've got an unhealthy appetite for it!) and cook the potato and make up pre-weighed ziplok bags of meals which I then freeze. Since he's been on an elimination diet (camel & sweet potato) he has settled down heaps, plus he's on a (clinic prescribed) daily antihistamine + fish oil caps. We're now doing the desensitisation shots which we're hoping will settle him down completely. However he is extremely allergic to beef (which we discovered after I'd bagged a couple of weeks worth - we gave them to some grateful friends). We haven't tried wheat (as my hubby & I are both wheat intolerant!) or dairy, which are the other two major irritants. I get the meat from a pet food supplier. If the itchiness doesn't settle down please ask your vet to refer you & your pup to a dermatology clinic. If you don't want to do that at least switch his diet to a more natural diet - kangaroo, goat, chicken, sheep or camel protein are all alternatives to beef. Sweet potato provides the carbohydrate portion. However as your pup is so young you really need to have expert advice. We give Sam bones (camel or Kangaroo) once or twice a week to ensure he's getting adequate calcium. We also use Epi-sooth shampoo & conditioner and a steriod spray for times when his paws get really bad. Staffy's are known for having sensitive skin so you're not alone! Good luck!
  22. Our staffy pup has a wooden dumbell that he chews (actually he's on to number 2). We also give him big gumnuts and he chews any sticks that make their way into our yard. I wouldn't be too concerned.
  23. Sam is getting a new collar and a couple of toys. And perhaps a little bit of turkey. He'll enjoy "unwrapping" his pressies more than anything because he just loves tearing paper!
  24. You realise you've just put those wheels in motion ... Our staffie has been pretty good, although the only piece of furniture he has chewed with intent is the bottom stair which you see as you come in the front door.
