  1. We recently bought a shepherd and he was very nippy as a small puppy. He's now 6months old and so gentle. I would just keep a toy handy. He especially wanted to bite when you petted him so I let him bite on a toy and brushed or petted. He seemed happy with that. We have 3 kids with him all the time, 5 sometimes and he never jumps on them. He does jump on me when he gets REALLY excited but has to be just that. Very gentle boy now just a big sooky. Has matured well, but I hear that GSDs do mature a bit faster?
  2. I think your role as a breeder should be to educate the public not offend. They will now most likely not contact another breeder and will be on the puppy farm sites, looking up bybers and or pet shops because it gets too hard to go through a breeder. Sorry but you can't expect the public to change if your not willing to help make that change.
  3. We all have things that bug us. You have to decide is it really hurting anyone at the end of the day. Though why can't people just say I don't really like small dogs and be done with it. The rest of the opinion is just utter dribble. I'm guessing to get a reaction. They are probably by nature someone overly opinionated and not worth the energy you've already put into this post.
  4. This isn't that shocking, she said before she paid the rest of the money for this dog that she wasn't going to get her deposit back so she was going to just pay for it and then resale it. Not sure what her reason for posting it on here is then to upset breeders.
  5. How do you know they arent registered with the WACA? Because I asked if the puppies were going to be registered they said no. I contacted the cawa and they said they knew about the add and it was removed that day.
  6. The breeder should have the first right to rehome the dog. It's not ethical to try to make more money on a purebred dog.
  7. They aren't going to give something of value back when they can make some money. It's shameful they will charge you more to adopt a purebred animal than a mutt.
  8. There seems to be a new trend on places like gumtree and the like to add your registered with the council and that means your a registered breeder. There is one ad in particular that bugs me that just says canine association of wa and the council they live in, doesn't even say they are registered with either. Is that even legal?
  9. ok, since crating was brought up in general topics I'm curious to find out what other people do. How long is too long in a crate etc I do crate my puppy if I'm out for short periods and at night. During the day if I'm working I'm leaving him in the laundry cause my other dog is outside but I don't want to leave them alone together just yet. I'm hearing others say they leave their dogs in their crates when they are at work? What age do you do that? I'm not sure I would, just curious how long he will be able to be left as he grows. He's only 11wks now, no longer than 2 hours in the crate atm.
  10. we sometimes give them to our adult dog, she loves them. They are expensive though and chicken wings or mince would be better value.
  11. I just read this. I'm shocked! I'm glad it worked out for you though. I had a similar thing once with the police. No complaints were made but I had the house broken into and the car stolen and the police kept making comments about the kids toys all over the house. Well, it was just toys. Easily packed up and put away, the house certainly wasn't dirty. It's clean mess lol. Toys were the least of my worries working and looking after 3 kids with my husband working away. People are so quick to judge sometimes. Wonder if I would get in trouble, I crate the puppy if I mop the floors , vaccum etc lol edited to say he's a real pain when he chases the broom. lol
  12. I adore retrievers and german shepherds. I find many breeds attractive and love seeing them but they are not for me. I grew up around a pit bull named mandy. It was never an issue, I didn't live with her, was my aunts dog. She was actually very loving and gentle. Never for a moment was she scary. Should I consider myself lucky I got out alive? I do know their chi was certainly one to worry about, she would take a finger, she hated anyone not in the family. I seen my moms chow snap one day and leap at my little cousin for no reason other than he was there. I had a aunt that had a dally that bit a family friend in the face one night when he was over for a visit. You shouldn't judge the breed because of media and what it was previously used for. Sure most people who buy them for fighting and protection they are going to do just that. Will would kill given the chance. They have also made wonderful pets. Would I own one? NO. Im not into bull breeds. edited to say they shouldn't be owned by just anyone but that goes for most breeds.
  13. There are a few GSD shown in SA and they often do well at group level. (GSD got Aus Bred in group this weekend). Judge on the weekend was good. Got each breed to come in one at a time and do a complete lap, plus a little bit more (the front of group dogs ran almost two laps). Meant every dog got a good run, on its own without the breed behind running up its bum, or the breed in front moving too slowly. Some of the group 5 dogs have the same issue in an in-show line up when the group 6 dog behind runs close up behind the group 5 dog. Sadly isn't because they aren't aware - is a deliberate tactic to try and scare and put off the G5 dog. That's shameful!
  14. Gsd won the class he was in here on the weekend and was looking forward to seeing him at the end of the day but he got thrown out, I don't know why just overheard it from the handler. If anyone knows I'm interested to know why. Not even sure what class it was as we got there late. Hubby seems to think it was state bred class.
  15. we bought a vac and as soon as we found an accident we cleaned it up, the best way I found to get it all up. Then used the right cleaners and we used lavender too. If you have carpet.
  16. Hubby sent this to me in an email. Odd since it was just discussed on here. The article goes on to talk about how they are used etc. This was the main point though. Interesting. When U.S. President Barack Obama went to Fort Campbell , Kentucky, for a highly publicized, but very private meeting with the commando team that killed Osama bin Laden, only one of the 81 members of the super-secret SEAL DevGru unit was identified by name: Cairo , the war dog. Cairo, like most canine members of the elite U.S. Navy SEALs, is a Belgian Malinois. The Malinois breed is similar to German shepherds but smaller and more compact, with an adult male weighing in the 30-kilo range. < (German shepherds are still used as war dogs by the American military but the lighter, stubbier Malinois is considered better for the tandem parachute jumping and rappelling operations often undertaken by SEAL teams. Labrador retrievers are also favored by various military organizations around the world
  17. Only have to watch the ever increasing cop shows on foxtel to see the number of mals showing up.
  18. I agree, I did see a couple pulling on the weekend and even with my love of the gsd it isn't a very good look.
  19. Interested in hearing from others that show their gsd in all breed shows. I'm finding that they don't do very well here in WA. (not interested in hearing any gsd arguments though) Most in WA seem to do the gsd only shows. I may have a look at those but I love watching the all breeds shows. Suppose I'm wondering how other gsd owners are going in all breeds. I'm new to showing, we haven't even done our first yet but I've been hanging out at shows to pick up some tips and to get a feel of how it runs. It's not even important that he wins anything a this stage, it's just a hobby and wasn't interested in picking a breed just for winning. He's my first main register dog (currently 10wks) Though I do find it frustrating that certain breeds tend to pick up everything. I've still got a lot to learn though. Jess
