  1. I love a few breeders - and they are very different. I love training and love training different types of dogs. I find you learn more and become a better trainer. I guess some breeders might be put off they I don't love one and only one breed, but that is their loss IMO :-).

They might be even more turned off to find out that I'm not a dog lover. I adore my dogs and love a select few (all highly trained, well behaved ), but I'm not fussed about the rest.

  2. The last time I went (a few years ago) there was a man with a few giant Amstaff's who kept on dropping their leads - they were almost pulling him over. He seemed to think it was funny and took no action to control them. They were very, very hyped up on the lure coursing and we had a close call. It's why I don't go any more :o .

  3. Reading through some of these responses, I can really see why more and more people are going to BYB. Go back and read some of your comments!! I understand in some breeds, you have to be careful about where your pups go. I am damn careful here mine go too. However my puppy buyers aren't subjected to the level of interrogation that some of you feel is a breeders right. These are still people. Some of them may be ignorant, they may not list or answer your questionnaires correctly or know what to put into an email.

I know I have received emails from some enquiring about pups that some other breeders would have instantly denied. Some I would not sell a pet rock to, but a good number were just ignorant and worded their email badly. If I had not taken the time and talked to them or found out some more information, they may well have gone to a back yard breeder. A couple have my pups and I could not be happier about the home they are in.

There are tyre kickers out there. I am not so naive to know this. But it's better to try to educate and hopefully direct them to a ethical breeder than send them straight to a puppy farm. The pedigree dog world is being destroyed from the inside out by its own members. The back yard people are sitting out there rubbing their hands together while we turn away pertly good puppy homes by a few peoples bad attitudes.

What is wrong with talking to your puppy buyers? Are we so elitist that our dogs now poo gold and are extremely rare?

Most ethical breeders do give a damn about their pups. Good breeders will screen their puppy buyers, but there are limits and invading a person's privacy by wanting to talk to their vet, is akin of wanting to also talk to their doctor. It's a gross invasion of privacy. What if they are a new puppy buyer or like most of my dogs, only see a vet once a year or two for vaccinations? The vet would not necessarily know how I look after my dogs and whether I am kind or look after them properly.

To the OP, I really hope you find a lovely breeder and a lovely new pet.

    +1 to this

+2. And just because someone looks at breeders with dogs on the ground doesn't make them bad/lazy. There are no "extra points" for waiting for years and years for a pet. If you're after particular lines, that is a different story (eg my next dog will be an agility dog. I will know who I want to get a dog from and will wait and wait and wait. If I was after a pet, the pool of potential breeders would be much bigger).

  4. You need to put it somewhere it will be seen - they aren't going to ruffle through all places in your wallet. Mine is in the clear section but where you normally put your licence. It is also on the screensaver of my phone ( in case of emergency call xxx. Aldo call xxx to take care of my dogs). I also have my cousins phone number under ICE in my contacts on my phone. My cousin is diabetic and the hospital told her to do this as paramedics will apparently look up you in case of emergency ( ie ICE) contact. No good of your phone is locked though, hence the screen saver idea.

  5. There was one particular puppy that stood out from the rest and I was prepared to go ahead with that pup. All seemed great…..until I received an email today.

Maybe you don't realise, it is not up to you in the end :)

Yes it is - it is up to both the buyer and the breeder. I expect to be asked a lot of questions by a breeder. I find it odd that someone would request a photo of me. After all, if you're dodgy it is easy to fake these things. All the breeders I have spoken to/emailed have been interested in having a conversation with me about whst I'm looking for in a dog , what kind of life I can offer etc . It has been a natural conversation and not :0 questions .

  6. Bon has nothing to do with it she currently lives in fear. This only happens when she's on the couch or on my bed etc which she has done her entire life so I'm not sure why Lucy is suddenly all high and mighty

Great that you are seeing Jane Harper - she has a good rep. Now that Bon is maturing Lucy could be trying to assert herself. She's also a bit unsure of herself, isn't she? Sometimes less stable dogs lash out at other dogs as a way of coping (not saying this is necessarily the case here, but my Lucy used to redirect aggression onto Fergus occasionally. It hasn't happened for a few years now and they are both safe together. They are a boy/girl combo and Fergus is submissive though).

Edit: Just watched the video. Very upsetting. Poor little Bon is sending Lucy all the "I don't want to fight" signals and Lucy is just ignoring them. That is a pretty fierce attack too. Completely unprovoked. I've never seen a dog attack like that before. Very, very viscous. :( .

  7. Same here, I am super paranoid about house fires starting when I am not home. All the talk of CO2 poisoning is worrying me too. My RE agent is refusing to get the aircon serviced even tho it hasn't been serviced in over 2 years, so there's no way I'd leave it on with nobody home. All power switches are turned off when I leave home too.

Sorry but how does aircon cause CO2 poisoning?

  8. As long as there isn't a storm, we'll walk in the rain. We don our raincoats and go. I think walks are important for mental and lhysical health. (We live I the burbs) for both them and me. We might miss a few days in a row due to the weather, but I live in Melbourne , so the dogs wouldn't get walked in winter if we had a "rain = no walk" rule. Walks in the rain are shorted though. For hot weather, we just go early (sometimes 5am when it is extreme).

  9. shel did explain why the button is where it is. I get that people get confused but PetRescue does clearly explain who they are and what they do. If people are just too darn lazy to read that then it is their issue, not PetRescues.

The rescue's name is on the adoption page of every animal. The rescue takes inquiries, sends forms (all with their name and not PetRescue), does the house check etc. If the adopter is told the rescue's name in each of these interactions with the rescue and still says "I got my dog from PetRescue" then blaming PetRescue for not making things clear is unfair. Maybe the rescue groups needs to make their brand "stand" out more when the interact with adoptees?

  10. Perfume's OP talked about her frustration at being directed to a website that either didn't have the information stated...or was no longer in existence.

My point, speaking only for myself, is that there's more useful things to do than wasting energy on frustration. And the main one, in this case, is to directly speak to breeders (by phone or email), whatever the state (or even existence) of a website. My reason being, the bottom line is what a breeder actually does with his/ her dogs. That's where their quality rests. And the p/b dogs we've adopted bear that out.

Why would a breeder mention their website in their ad if they don't have one/ haven't touched it for 10 years? Why not just say. "Call/email. For details"? It makes no sense...

  11. Sorry, I didn't explain very well, probably because I don't actually know what it is that is throwing me off as the shot itself is a great one. I think maybe it is the dog that is off-balance, is she turning slightly rather than running straight? I can't put my finger on it, like her back is closer to the camera than her feet are (like a motorbike turning a corner?), perhaps it is just an optical illusion, I'm not sure what it is sorry :(

Like I said though, I think they are great shots and a stunning subject to boot :)

I agree. I love the expression in one, but can't help but think the dog has got themselves into an awkward position (twisty)

  12. How on earth did a discussion about a GSD attacking turn into a conversation about pitbulls?

I'm glad she got fined. I wish all people with attacking dogs got fined. It might prompt people to behave more responsibly, pay attention to their dog's behaviour and seek help when there are small indicators that things aren't perfect.

  13. Wow. I don't get the angst towards PetRescue . They explain clearly who they are when you hit the donate button. If people don't read that then it is on them, not on PetRescue. If the person who donated in error doesn't contact PetRescue, then what can they do?

Moving the button on to another part of the page isn't going to help. They could remove it entirely , but then someone is going to have to pay to run PetRescue.
