  1. What brand are you after?

Our local (Hoppers Crossing) Megapet will sell boxes of Nature's Gift & slabs of Advance (the only brands I buy of tinned so not sure about others). Both Puppy & Adult formulas. I see no reason why the other Megapets wouldnt do the same.

  2. I think there is already a limit on how many litters a bitch can have - by default at least. I believe if you wish to breed a bitch older than 6, you need to have Vet certification that she is healthy etc.
    14. A member shall not breed a bitch (except under extenuating circumstances) causing it to whelp more than six times without prior veterinary certification of fitness for further breeding, and without prior approval of the member's Member Body.

I'm not quite sure WHY the ANKC cannot place restrictions on things like exporting entire litters - it is a voluntary organisation, people are not forced to join. If they don't want to abide by the rules and regulations, they have no place being part of the membership.

Because its the Federal law - restriction of trade.

Can the ANKC refuse to sign off on the exportation application so they cannot be sent overseas with their papers?

  3. Since when can we not remove dewclaws from pups???? I thought we were still allowed to..... Have I missed something?

No, you have missed nothing, as far aw I know anywho.

But, there are those receptionists at some vet surgeries will tell you "We dont remove dewclaws on pups here".

They say it as a form of mutilation and this is the general feeling that is passed on to new vet nursing recruits I am told.

The vets themselves WILL do it, 9 times out of 10.

It is pathetic when you have to get past the receptionist and ask the vet but that is the way it is.

I suppose they feel that if they keep up their PETA mantra and keep on bullying people out of having it done, most people will THINK there is a law against it, when there is not.

    Souff

Unfortunately, it looks like I DID miss something  Under the DPI (Vic) regulations, dewclaws may only be removed by a veterinarian. So at least we can still do it, but..... now to find a vet who will as you say, do it and be, who KNOWS how to do it.

Gonna say here and now, if there is anyone in Victoria who hasn't read the DPI website and all publications/links relating to dogs & cats in Victoria - do it as soon as you can and take notes because any one of us could be next

  5. I don't like it, either. What if you want to register the pups at 4 weeks??? At the time when you are organizing homes puppy packs etc you don't need to be worrying about getting the registrations in too (also that way you can hand the papers over when the pups get picked up).

I managed to get mine registered via the express service so was done in 2 days but I wouldn't bank on it lol.

Eta what if you haven't chosen your pick pup at the time of microchipping? Not such a problem if the pups are the same colour but you can't really have a pup chipped as black but registered as yellow for eg.

  6. Erny- you are correct. DOGS Vic did NOTHING to inform it's members of this new legislation, it was only after Judy was caught out that it garnered a mention in the gazette.

Bartok- look at the wording of the Debarking legislation on the DPI website, it may help you understand a bit better

People were also up in arms about the way the whole thing went down and the fact that the dogs who were in excellent condition and AT NO RISK (as they had already been 'done') were seized. Something I'm still not convinced was done legally (reading the DPI website again..... There are procedures that need to be followed for the seizure of animals).

I agree that breeders need to do the right thing but in all honesty, who would have thought that we could not have a procedure done legally in another state and then be charged with a criminal offense for exhibiting said dog in the state of Voctoria?? Remember that according to this legislation, NO DOG that has ever resided in Victoria and is debarked in a way that is NOTAPPROVED in Victoria (even if it's done in accordance with that state or countries legislations or if it is sold to a new owner etc) it is a criminal offense to exhibit it. Who would have thought that would be the case?? I certainly didn't.....

For example if I sell a puppy to New South Wales and it is debarked in accordance with their legislation, that dog is not able to be exhibited at our state specialty.

Hope this helps clear it up?? I completely get where you are coming from BTW.

  7. SP - there was another one issued - see below:

    Compulsory Micro-chipping from 2012

At the October 2010 ANKC Conference it was resolved that micro-chipping prior to registration be compulsory across all states by

    1st January 2012.

Further information on the implementation of this decision will be forwarded from the ANKC in due course.

The notice will appear in the DOGS Victoria gazette (February edition) and on the DOGS Victoria website (from yesterday).

Yes, that is the original email I got, word for word. Then I received the recall one. Weird.

  8. It would be good to have the exact wording as it's a confusing case. People who aren't familiar with it probably can't believe there isn't more to it as it is just ridiculous. Doesn't help when the rumour mill gets going.

    Exactly!

Quiet at work so doing a quick search but it doesn't appear to be listed on the Magistrates court list. Steve said it wasn't listed beforehand so maybe it won't get put up?

Which courthouse was it, anyone know?

    Seymour

thanks. It's not up there. Bugger.

I thought you could always transfer a LR pet without being a DOgsVic member?

In case anyone is interested, it was $28 early this year to transfer an LR puppy however if you joined the COmpanion Dog Club it included one free LR transfer into your name. The cost of this membership was $30. I included it with all my puppies and sent off the application forms and signed rego papers myself. Not sure if they will keep going with this offer or not though.

Dont see how that matters though- lots of breeders keep their show or breeding dogs in pet homes still registered in their name.

I don't think that you can register microchips in Victoria in buyer names can you?

In Tassie, a Magistrates Court decision/sentence wouldn't be published or even transcribed unless it were appealled. Not sure if it's the same in Victoria.

At the very least, the charges should be available somewhere I would think.

Unfortunately I know more about QLD law than Vic lol (thanks, Distance education  ).

  11. I would just like to point out that in Victoria breed lectures are open to all. If anyone has an interest in a particular breed or group they are very welcome, you do not have to be a trainee judge to attend.

Unfortunately they aren't always conducted by people actually involved in a breed

The system for breed lectures and exam night/practical sessions seems to have changed at least for Group 2, over the past few years. Very disappointing really.

I think a mentorship program is a great idea, I know something was talked about in Victoria but have no idea what happened with it??

It won't stop those already doing the wrong thing (and what will?? They simply move states and register a new prefix), but it would provide support for those starting out who may not have a supportive breeder or active breed club etc to begin on the right foot rather than being sent out on their own to fend for themselves.

  12. Seriously, ........... Or whatever your name is now, can you please explain what was so offensive about your child being asked if he had clean hands?? Was it the question or the way in which it was asked?

I genuinely want to know as we attend lots of Pet Expos and similar events and I find the feedback from 'everyday Joe' to be very useful in how I deal with people and promote the breed and pedigree dogs in general

    Thank you in advance.

  13. I'm not a fan of kids but I don't join kid forums (parenting forums I guess) and call all the posters DOG HATERS.

And yep, my dogs are sure as hell more important TO ME than any child. I dont have children, don't want children and don't go out of my way to spend time with them.

I'm happy to be polite and allow kids to pay my dogs and even loan them to Junior Handlers! But they are my responsibility and my family. So what if they have fur?

  14. Our smooth is in the yard for 11 hours, 4 days a week. The neighbors reckon they rarely hear her make a noise which is surprising because she is NOT a quiet dog (gets it from her father lol. Some lines seem to be more talkative than others but they don't bark at nothing, some just like to chat to you or have the last word :)).

There are some very nice ones in WA.

They like walks and to zoom but are otherwise pretty chilled out. They sleep like the dead, honestly I hve never had a dog who slept so soundly.

Grooming wise they don't need much apartfrom when they are blowing coat (change of seasons) an they will leave a halo of fur where they lay down lmao but once that is over after about 2 weeks or so they don't drop much coat.

  15. Collie Smooth could suit you :o not the kind of dog most people see and think 'OMG I want one!' but they pretty much tick all your boxes although only around 20kg so not overly large. But they tend to look bigger than they actually are.

Our smooth is in the yard one her own (the terriers are in the house) most days during the week with no ill-effects.

  16. I can only think of one thing at the moment that irks me!

I hate the sight of something in Gazette or even posted on here that goes along the line of:

"Group 1 and Group ... indoors, all other groups outside"!

I am sure plenty of Toy dogs would love to be outside as well showing rather be indoor! Especially on a warm or even hot day!

I remember last year that it was like 35 that day and nearly every exhibitors in Group 1 spread

themselves out to the nearest door waiting for Group Specials as it was bloody hot in the Pavillion!

Even worse when it's Group 1 and 2!!! What the heck?? Since when are terriers not outdoor dogs???
