I live near Mittagong in the Southern Highlands...there is a pet shop on the main road in the middle of town, and they are constantly advertising purebred puppies amongst all the oodles....most recently seen - Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Labradors, Maremmas, Toy Poodles, Jack Russells and Siberian Huskies

Forgive my ignorance (I guess I could look it up) but is that what they were bred to do? I just love to see dogs doing those things.....

I am starting to run out of ideas for tricks to teach Jager. We dont have a lot at the moment as my imagination isnt so great! We currently have sit, drop, stay, play dead, shake (can do either paw) and we started "spin" last night which he has picked up really quickly, i will be working on "turn" as in going the opposite way to "spin" so that he can go both ways depending on the command.

I have attempted beg but i dont think he has the balance. He is a pug and i think his chest and neck make him too top heavy and we havent been able to get anywhere. I also tried crawl but i think i was confusing him so i stopped.

I am just after some suggestions of some good youtube channels that will give me new ideas and simple instructions on how to teach them.

He is a smart little cookie, in 3 x 5 minute training sessions yesterday afternoon we had spin pretty good. I can stand upright and do the command and around he goes. And he seems to really enjoy the training, i mean the treats :)

Try "Kikopup" in YouTube search - Emily Larlham is terrific with tricks using a clicker.

If the pup has already been registered on the Limited Register (which appears to be the case here according to what the breeder said), can you register them on the Associate Register as well? I wouldn't have thought so.....

Another vote for a Border Terrier. Great little dogs - compact, sensible, easy care, smart. Why not go to some shows and meet a couple, and see if you like them? I also think they are a nice, honest looking breed that would suit a rural situation. Also they won't show the dirt too badly. :)

Please don't think about a Border Terrier unless you have really good small dog escape-proof fencing all around your 5 acres - it's simply not an option. Plus they would need to be very carefully introduced to chickens and any other livestock. And they would usually far rather attack and try to kill a snake themselves - "Look what I did, Mum!" than alert you first They also shed and need hand stripping a couple of times a year.

thanks Rebanne and others for your support. I am sobbing like a baby. He is a little shit and a nightmare of a dog but I love hgim so much and he is also the lgiht of my daughters life. Even though he is a turd running away is not his thing - food is everything to him and he wouldnt want to miss any meals! It's pouring with rain there now and blowing a gale. My only thought is that he has gone in under the house and found the abandoned duck egg nest form where the girls went broody but I blokced their access off from their side of the garden. Then Im thinking a snake would love those duck eggs and maybe Alvin has been bitten. It's not accessible for people so no way of knowing if he's therem being black he is hard to see.

we used to rub it into our skin before sunbaking (gave a lovely tan) & from what I have just read, maybe it was, after all, beneficial & is safer than sunscreen

I'd be using proper sunscreen and learning to cope with having paler skin. Tanning is dangerous and coconut oil provides no sun protection. Your skin may be more moist after tanning using coconut oil (like how a roast leg of meat that's been basted with fat with be moist) but the damage is still done and in time, it'll all catch up with you.

Anyways..

If you want to eat a particular amount of it per day, it can be used in place of butter or margarine in cooking or food prep. You do have to use much smaller amounts for savoury food though as the coconut taste is pretty strong.

I give my greyhounds a tablespoon every couple of days so for a BC, I'd probably give less.

Also, I'd be reading those pro-coconut articles with a healthy dose of skepticism. Lots of things slipped in there that aren't researched but still claimed..

It's a palatable fat source and great for giving dogs a bit of extra fat in winter but I'd not be putting too much stock in some of the other claims.

I got sucked in by all the health claims too - bought a 500g jar from the health food shop and gave it to my 3 dogs over about 2 - 3 months. Didn't notice a change in anything

Sorry if this has been asked before(82 pages is too much to read)but does anyone own greyhounds and use Black Hawk? I have two and my white girl has a small amount of dematitis on her feet.Currently feeding Pro Plan salmon with great results but would be interested in trying this product as it seems to give good results and a decent price.I see you deliver to the Central Coast how would I go about getting a sample bag and could anyone suggest what type of Black hawk may suit them.

I had a dog who was on propalin for quite some time, it was the best thing for the incontinence. Never had any problem with it affecting the grass though, sounds a bit odd.

You could look in to trying stilboestrol instead. It is a tablet and if I remember correctly wad taken twice a week. Although for us it wasn't nearly as good as the propalin.

I've got a couple of bitches who have suffered from spay incontinence for quite a few years now, and have been on and off propalin for some time. Bitch A (Border Terrier) I've taken off it now - for probably about 8 months, mainly because it makes her very edgy and nervy all the time, and since I stopped giving it to her I have only seen her 'leak' just a couple of times since then. Bitch B (cattledog X) is getting on in years now - she had also been off it since early this year, but was beginning to leak more and more, so I've put her back onto it (she appears to suffer no ill-effects while on it), and it's solved the problem.

My vet suggested I get them both settled on it, then try reducing the dose to a 'holding' level - which I did, and I can keep them both on barely half the recommended dose now, so maybe you could try that once your dog is settled. Then just keep an eye on things, and even try withholding it for a while later on to see if has solved the problem....I certainly wasn't happy to think my girls were going to have to be on it for the rest of their lives.

Never had any problem with the grass dying though! Maybe if you can reduce the dose rate at some stage, that might help?

LOL. Of course heaven forbid teaching the dog to act responsibility. Being responsible means making the right choice even if you might at the moment prefer to do something else. If you never allow that choice, you may well train behavior, but you haven't trained responsibility.

Have you even looked into motivation based methods? They are all about choice and getting the dog to choose the right one. Google "It's yer choice" game. Warning: Your dog may have fun playing it.

When I look at the Susan Garrett crate games video, and when I see dogs that have been trained to play that game, all I can see is the dog acting responsibly IOW, the dogs have a job to do (go to their crates and stay there until released) and by doing it they are acting responsibly - and having fun at the same time

To be honest if that is the video that is held up as an example of how amazing Koehler training is, it's pretty unimpressive.

I haven't read much of this thread past the first 2 pages but watched this video and have to agree with huski, that video was VERY unimpressive in regards to quality obedience work. What was with physically putting the dog back in position Each to their own. If someone wants to use that method and thinks they get quality work from it then let them live in their own little world! The woman looked completely miserable with her dog, not to mention her dog probably wanted to be anywhere but there. Why be there if it is that unenjoyable?

Agreed, that was absolute rubbish, and they both looked unhappy.

Didn't take much notice of the human, but the poor dog looked miserable and really stressed out, especially in the figure eight.....

My ACD injured her rear leg and the Vet has prescribed Previcox 227. She is taking half a tablet and the vet said to administer it for as long as needed.

My question is how long is that? We are on day two and she is alot better. The problem is how do I know if the NSAID is just masking the pain and as soon as I stop she will be in pain again. If she continues to improve as much as she has I wouldn't be giving her any more as I am aware of the side effects of these type of drugs. However, two days, to me, doesn't seem long enough or am I wrong? (I haven't used this drug before)

I suggest you give your vet a ring and ask him/her.....but I would think you might need to give more than two days' worth How many tablets did your vet give you?

A couple of books, a nice ComfortFlex collar in sexy black (he already has the ComfortFlex harness which is great), a useful drinking bowl and holder for his crate, and a gorgeous Foggy Mountain winter coat - which was on special as well as free shipping, costing me all of about AUD30.00 (for the coat).

I do not feel subsidizing irresponsible owners is fair on the rest of society. Whilst there are many benefits of owning a pet, it is a CHOICE.

I have heard stories of people dumping pets in pounds and then going on holidays and coming back for a cuter puppy or kitten on their return. So I don't see how subsidised desexing and no surrender fees will help the majority of people.

I would think most BYB dogs are not bred because owners can't afford desexing. There are plenty of responsible owners who have entire dogs (and cats) and manage to not let them breed, so I don't really think desexing in itself is going to be the answer.

There are too many people who want a cute litter of pups or kittens for the "kids to experience" or to make a quick buck. I think education and possibly some kind of regulation is key to addressing this.

I believe that if those people dumping pets in pounds to go on holiday had the opportunity of taking those pets on holiday with them (I guess I mean dogs mainly) then maybe the problem might be reduced a bit - the same with being able to rent with dogs/cats. Australia is generally a really unfriendly place for owning dogs, perhaps if we were allowed to let our pets participate more in our lives publically (sp? It doesn't look right!) the dumpage rates might not be quite so high?

I read an article a few weeks ago in the Sydney Morning Herald - promoted by the awarding of a dog with the VC (or doggy equivalent) for braveness in the line of duty - but somewhere in the article she quoted figures which showed that here in Australia we PTS around 250,000 cats and dogs each year in pounds/shelters. In England however the figure is 25,000. How does that compute, given the huge difference in human and animal numbers between the two countries? Could it be that there in England a) they don't sell pets in pet shops and b) dogs are allowed in all sorts of public places...?
