  1. Hello, has anyone else had to manage a 2 week old puppy (or very young puppy) who has had a rectal prolapse? Puppy has been treated by the vet but it prolapsed again yesterday. Vets advice has been followed, but I really don't want it to happen again, does anyone have any advice to help?

  2. What Christina said :)

She may have also been frightened by a plane overhead....depending where they live! Nosiy miners make a hell of a racket if they think a dog is coming into "their territory", swooping birds. A truck could of backfired while she was toileting and scared her. A neighbour may have been loud or yelled at the dog

Dogs can form lots of weird association. Sounds like she feels "safer" toileting in the dark.

I would be crate training & supervising toilet time. :)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I will give them a call and pass on the suggestions I receive.

  3. Ideas please....

Several months ago I rehomed a young adult Toy Poodle to a lovely couple who live locally.

They have a fully enclosed backyard, with a doggie door, so she has access to the yard 24/7.

The poodle lived in and out of my house and used the doggie door when she needed to go to the toilet. Both my property and theirs are rural properties with no neighbours so it can't be a neighbour teasing the dog type of problem.

Lately the poodle has refused to go out to urinate during the day, however she will use the doggy door to go out and toilet at night.

I have suggested to them that for some reason she has become scared of the backyard and it may help to take her out on the lead and walk her around, and play with her out there. Also to start feeding her outside. I asked them to make the backyard and their time out there a 'happy place'.

I wonder if anyone here could give me advice that I could pass on to help them with this problem. They love the little poodle very much but of course don't like her weeing in the house.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. I use the tablets - I start with one tablet when I see any eye issues, but some dogs need to start on a smaller dose, like half a tablet, just in case it upsets their tummy. But I do one tablet a day until I see noticeable improvement, then I go to half a tablet a day for a few weeks, until the issue has cleared up and then for at least another week past then just to help with any further internal healing and repair.

I usually coat it in peanut butter and pretend it's a treat and my guys just take it, but sometimes need to hide it in their food or whatever. Just feed it the way they normally take tablets.

As it's "practitioner only" (which doesn't mean prescription only) I put in my vets details. No one has ever contacted her, but she knows I use her details and is fine with it.

Minimax, Thank you I will speak to my vet and try some.

  5. Thanks Minimax, that is the kind of thing I was hoping to hear. Can you please tell me what you buy, how you use it and where you get it from?

Persephone it always occurs late March / early April, but does occur at other times, it is not an everyday problem.

The regular vet I see has checked for all the above-mentioned problems. I just really hate seeing my dog uncomfortable and disfigured by these minor problems so am looking for other options.

Environmental is hard to fix, I live on acreage with a huge garden which the dogs have the run of.

  6. IMO I believe there are breeders....and puppy farmers. I believe they are distinct by practices. Well socialised temperament tested, health tested animals are bred to produce quality animals, with adequate resources for post sale responsibilty or care... Thats a breeders role.

Churning out masses of fancy pups from animals that are not adequately socialized, have had little testing health/temperament and parents which on the whole will never be seen by the public (in some cases over a hundred dogs)well that is a puppy farm. Whether there is poop on the ground, knots in the fur is simply cosmetic concerns..there is more to a satisfactory bred puppy than that!

Places that churn out pups for sale from large numbers of dogs.. like cakes at a baker sale for profit in front of quality should all be reexamined.

..if you trust the rspca to govern that so be it i guess.

(edit add after I saw replies)I agree that the rules of trespass should apply T. I have not read one account of trespass on a breeders property on this forum (maybe I missed it)nor have I read where a prosecution has taken place of someone doing so... there are alot of breeders on this forum. Is this fear as real for the general breeder of register dogs? Does a person with a few breeding dogs really fear that someone will do as described above?

Maybe Im wrong in my definition of puppy farm vs breeder but it is my opinion. Yes there are always going to be oops litters, byb etc.. but I think where possible more controls should be there for better quality practices.

As for the OT I have not heard of this place where the incident is said to have occurred before now. About or whoever is in the wrong or been wronged will be heard...I believe courts serve justice according to the law, not public opinion.

    Well said!

  7. Hi Mojopoodle,

This is a cut and paste from the ASAP website:

Please note, tests marked with * are patented/licenced. Restriction in certain geographical regions may prevent us from offering these tests. Clients in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand please contact us to discuss availability.

and where the disease is listed by name, you will see the asterisk next to it:

Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration - PRA *

    Hi Zenchel

    Thank you for your comment.

I guess if the OP wants to know if the testing is available they will need to contact ASAP as suggested by Tapua earlier. ASAP tested my Toy Poodle in 2011 for colours & various other diseases including PRCD.

    Regards

    Mojopoodle

  8. Is this something new? I have not done PRCD PRA testing for a while but my last test was done through ASAP with no problems.

No, it's always been the case that Animal Network holds the licence for prcd PRA and CEA testing in Australasia.

Hi Zenchel, I have just been to ASAP Labs website and under the heading 'Genetic Diseases and Traits that we can test for' the first mentioned is PRCD. This is under the Diseases by Breeds for Mini & Toy Poodles.

    Regards

  9. Due to licensing arrangements, Animal Network is the only company that Australian breeders can use for prcd PRA testing:

They have a list of accredited collectors on their website or you can have your vet take the swabs. It's worth calling Animal Network to discover what discounts are available e.g. online or volume.

Is this something new? I have not done PRCD PRA testing for a while but my last test was done through ASAP with no problems.

  10. i have 3 poodles and their parents have been tested AA but i would like to get the girl have recently kept and the boy i have recently purchased tested, can anyone recommend a place i have heard prices vary enormously :)

    Kind regards Jenny

    Hi Jenny

ASAP Labs are the cheapest that I have used. They have a detailed website with a lot of useful information. They also have a list of non-vet 'collectors' that may be cheaper than your vet.

  11. I have two kids and this weekend I went out and about for a look-see for Christmas gifts for them. After the shoe stores (LOL)I saw plenty of potential gifts for the kids & friends but came home with a nice new leash & some fancy collars for the dogs.

    Fail.

No wonder my dogs greet me at the door to check out the shopping bags.

My poodles always check out my shopping bags, as far as they are concerned I never fail at shopping!

  12. I think the mistake a lot of people make with new puppies & playpens, is that they don't actually make a proper door in the playpen. Instead they put the pup in & take him out by lifting him over the top. Pups are pretty smart & it doesn't take them long to work out that the way out is over the top

    Really good post!
