Our youngest Malinois girl came into season on Aug. 6. We have kept her with our other dogs (which includes two intact males) the entire time. She is wearing her Seasonals pants which allow her to clean herself yet still keeps the house/furniture tidy. The boys are going crazy with her now - whinging and we do keep them separated when we can't give 100% attention. One is an experienced stud dog, so he's our major indicator of when they can't be together. Better safe than sorry when it comes to girls in season. If 100% attention cannot be paid, it's best to keep them apart.

PennHip is not well thought of here in the USA. They (the PennHip people) won't diagnose if a dog does or does not have HD, they just tell about the laxity...um, why not just tell if the dog is dysplastic based on the radiographs?? Also, they do not have an open database whereas the OFA does. That information is useful for breeders/owners to learn all they can about the bloodlines. Anyway, not a scheme I use. I prefer OFA.

I would beat them in the show ring with dogs that are NOT artificially altered to demonstrate to him/her that all that "stuff" is not necessary to win.

We had a visiting bitch here for two weeks and our male covered her a total of 5 times, once every other day. She is due to have her puppies around July 1st, so once I hear from her owner I will share the litter size with everyone. One of our girls was also covered 5 times, once every other day, by the same male. She is due around the middle of July. I'll also be sure to share that litter size info once the puppies arrive.

I don't know if this is the case in Oz, but Goldens here in the US seem to be riddled with cancer and die young. The 10-14 year prediction for longevity isn't common here with that breed.

Since I live in the US, this isn't going to help you, but I went to Spain in '08 and brought back two puppies. So I did import from Spain, but not into Oz.

Ours wear coloured ribbon/rick rack from birth and then at about 3 weeks we switch to little collars. They wear them 24/7 until they leave us at 8-9 weeks of age.

We have a crib mattress in one of our rooms. It is covered with a waterproof cover and then we use baby sheets. Super-easy to wash up the sheets and I think the mattress was around $30.00 at Walmart.

I do and have never had a problem with the bitch or the whelps.

When I judge, I give the exhibitors enough time to stack, but not a LONG time. The "going over" of the dog is for the exam, checking teeth, coat, muscle tone, testicles, etc. I'm not "judging" a dog at that time, I'm doing the exam. The judging comes when I see the movement, temperament, and all the pieces from everything done in the ring come together. If a dog moves a foot on the exam or sits down, big deal. I'm not worried about it.

Find another vet. The guy sounds like a jerk. Your bitch & puppies are a priority and should be seen NOW.

I learned something new today from this thread! I had no idea that FCRs came in yellow! Are they permitted to be shown in Oz? Only black & liver are allowed here. Just curious!

slightly OT but may be relevant, but I was told the ANKC had rejected Penn Hip scores, and I believe the FCI has just recently had meetings and the recognition of these scores is considered no longer viable. Sorry I cant help with the topic, but thought this may be of use. Wow...well that is very interesting. It certainly is recognised by the OFA in the US and therefore the AKC. Can you advise where you heard this...is it on a website or through a Canine association? I would love to get further information? Really? That's news to me! OFA & PennHip are competing organisations here in the USA. Here is the only mention of PennHip you will find at the AKC website: "PennHIP A method, established in 1993, of evaluating hip dysplasia in dogs by calculating hip laxity; within-breed ratings are provided, permitting breeders to select dogs with the best (smallest laxity) hips for breeding future generations." I found that in their glossary section. The AKC only uses OFA results on official documents, NOT PennHip. PennHip is not popular here at all for many reasons. Where did you hear the OFA & AKC recognise PennHip? EXCELLENT idea, ellz! I also bring an extra set of clothes with me to shows so I can change if there is a long lapse from the time we show and group competition. It's smart to honor your feet/body when you aren't active in the show ring. This past weekend I showed my boy in Fort Worth, TX. The shows had 2,300+ dogs each day. Here we get get random ring times and are not judged in alphabetical order. We were the first breed in at 8:00am. The group competition wasn't going to start until 3:30pm and I knew herding would be one of the last ones because there were several herding breeds being judged at 2:00pm. So, I drove back home at 8:15am, changed my clothes and relaxed. I got dressed in my show outfit again and drove back at 2:00pm. Even at shows that are way out of town, I will do the same thing. There is no need to not be comfortable for a long break. Honestly, my show outfits are comfortable, but they aren't as comfortable as comfy sweat pants/shorts & a t-shirt!
