  1. Out of curiosity why do some states get the breed numbers entered in the show and we here in Brissie don't?

I would love to know a rough estimate on how many are entered before my breed so I wouldn't have to rush for the early morning shows.

  2. Hi guys,

Thanks heaps for all your comments, even though I haven't replied to all of them yet, I am very grateful for them and have read every single one. Your comments make sense and won't definitely go for a cross-breed (unless it's from a shelter or a rescue group). Most likely though will go for a pure-bred dog :-) You have probably saved me another week or two trying to look up more info about cross-breeds, now I do have much better understanding why not to go for one:-)

Also thanks that you have commented even though my post may have been offended some of you as pure-bred dog breeders. I truly hadn't believed anyone would reply to it or thought it would be deleted before anyone would have a chance to comment (being on the site of pure-bred dog breeders). I have learnt a lot today and maybe this post has helped also someone else who had been deciding between a pure-bred and a cross:-)

Thanks lots and lots and have heaps of fun with your lovely dogs:-) Xx

This is the best part of having an open discussion, education. Well done on doing all your research first before just jumping at the first puppy you see. Good Luck :)

  3. I have fallen in love with my Mum's Havanese. He is just gorgeous!! He is outgoing and loves to play, he especially loves exploring outside and chasing leaves. Harley is only a puppy but so far has a beautiful silky coat and doesn't mind being groomed. He has SOOO much personality and everyone that has met him has fallen in love. Great little dogs in my opinion!

  4. I'll put in here too that Open shows are normally a lot cheaper or free/automatic entry as the judges are trainee judges and not able to judge at all breeds level yet. I found when starting out a new puppy or one that hadn't been in the ring for a while that Open shows are great. It gives the dog another opportunity in the ring and for a dog like my boy that has HEAPS of energy I found the Open shows were great to settle him before going in the champ show.

Although sometimes I think I could have entered him in a sweepstake class, Open show and Champ show and he could still do it all three times over

  5. Great looking pooch. The original owners must be ecstatic they found such a great household

I agree. It would have been very stressful to have to leave your dog behind for work but at least they can be assured he is in a great home. He is gorgeous!

  6. I have been looking at the griffons too, so cute. Think its the pug though, i think i realised deep down its the pug i want.

That's the most important thing. It's what you feel deep down when you look at both breeds and which one you can't live without.

Now to find one from a good breeder. There are heaps of lovely breeders around of the pugs.

  7. We had a Boston and she was fantastic. VERY athletic, I would call her my little mountain goat. We lived near a large reserve and one minute she was next to you and the next she was scaling a wall and giving me a heart attack! We had a 1.5 metre fence at home and she would jump to the top and rock until she got enough momentum to scale down the other side.

While we had her we got a Golden Retriever and a Shepherd x kelpie from the RSPCA. She was top dog and never took any crap from the other dogs. Having said that I never had an issue taking her to the park and her playing with every dog there, she was very social, just never liked to be pushed around. I started grooming from home when she was about 6 and she was fine with all the dogs coming and going.

Jemica did shed but not as much as some of the pugs I've cuddled at shows.

She was very independent but also sooo affectionate with her family and boy was she a clown! She was always making us laugh with her antics.

It is very sad that we didn't have a digital camera when we owned Jemica and I only have a couple of printed photos in frames of her playing with our rabbit. I think I could have made a whole book of photos out of her she was just awesome.

Good Luck in your search, both pugs and bostons are great.

  8. UPDATE: Mum has just called and she has fallen in love! Although I knew it would be hard to resist this little guy. She said he was fine when she picked him up from the airport and was quiet in his crate the whole way home. When she got home he came out of his shell and they have been playing ever since! He follows her around everywhere and gone are the rules that he is not allowed in her bedroom....she has moved his crate to right next to her bed. He has a little play pen in the living room and he happily goes in there to have a rest.

And he has a new name.....Manny. It was my suggestion and I think it suits him.

When it comes to small dogs I'm a Shih Tzu girl through and through but maybe one day Tintin Jac. In 24 hours this little guy stole all our hearts.

  9. Well the last 24 hours have gone too quickly  He is so much fun to have around. He loves rice in an empty water bottle and paper towel roles. He likes to growl at only the female singers on 'The Voice'.

He went to bed fine but woke up at about 1am when my OH's pager went off to go out to a fire. So I put the crate next to my bed and after only 30 seconds of sniffing my fingers to make sure I was still there, he fell asleep and The kids had to wake him up at 6.30am so we could get ready for school.

He has had a bath and blowdry and is ready to fly to his new Mum at lunch time.

Thank you for all the great comments. He has been a dream to have here.

  10. Look what I picked up from the breeders today.....

He doesn't have a name yet. He is my Mum's dog so is only here for one night before he flys down to Sydney tomorrow :(

I have to say that I am soooo proud of my Mum. Even when she has walked past the local pet shop and called me all gooey over the current cross in the window, she has always listened when I tried to push her towards a pure breed from a good breeder or a rescue dog. After much research she decided on the Havanese and when she saw this little guy's photo she just fell in love. I am happy that she trusted me to go and meet the breeders and pick him up for her. I can't wait for her to meet him tomorrow, he is just divine!!!!

  11. :offtopic:

Sorry quick question. I have always heard that you shouldn't add calcium powder to a puppies diet (Been told by my Golden breeder). Why do vets keep recommending it? Is it beneficial to some breeds and not others or better to not be used at all? Just wondering ;)

The OPs diet is pretty well devoid of calcium, a calcium supplement would be advisable in this case.

Balanced diets do not need additional calcium, a complete dry food diet or a raw diet based on edible RMBs for instance would not need additional supplements.

Cool thanks. I understand if you need to ADD to a deficient diet but I hear of it being recommended as an extra on top of a normal diet and that's what is confusing to me.
