  1. Jinta has issues with nail trimming too....why are some dogs so protective of their nails??? Ok I admit I screwed up slightly when she was a pup and went too short on 1 nail, but 3 yrs later, if I pick up the clipers, she runs off, or growls at me( this is the ONE time she will or has shown agression towards me) I doubt a vibrating tool will be any less stressful...i rely on vet visits to keep her nails trim, and walks on concrete help a little but not much. Id invest in a dremmel if I thought she would let me use it.
  2. why guess?? about medicine?? ekkk. Handy to sedate a dog...bit wrong though, if it was ok, ive had sedated Jinta for her silly puppy era...2 yrs worth. ask a vet and only give doggy valium(not human), under vets instructions. I know of a pappilion who had an OD of human valium.(accident, it ate about 10) IMO medication is a little overboard for grooming purposes. I wouldnt even consider it, unless prescribed. Most dogs arent THAT crazed... Jinta is a freak about her nails with me, but my vet doesnt sedate her to cut them. Mums SWF is a great dog to groom, she can stand still for up to an hr(after bath..) while I trim her perfectly! Please get Vets advise, not forum. At a guess, id say the weight of the dog affects the amount needed to sedate.
  3. :D im SO happy to see lil Minty is home and well. When Jinta was a pup she had a bout of gastro( although not as badly as minty) and vets advise for food was small meals of chicken and rice about 4 times a day. They get used to it, i will still feed jinta chicken and rice if shes not well, its her comfort food. I recall getting up at 6am and boiling rice and chicken, and feeding Jinta... bf laughed so hard, because theres no way id be up at 6am for ANYONE else!! princess Jinta had me wrapped around her pinky from day 1. YAY Minty. :p
  4. Im praying for lil minty. Hope all goes well, and shes back chewing shoes in no time. :p
  5. Thanks again everyone, As some of you know I fought hard for her life, I took her from bad people, shed been to hell and back at age 5 wks, she was 7 wks when she passed. i really wanted to ensure her safety in her furture, and look what happend. i feel responsible somehow, i promised that puppy safety and a good life with me. I know i did everything right, she didnt go out on footpaths, she never left my home except for the vets and the one occasion she was taken, she was gone for 6 hrs, the thug i rescued her from came and snatched her. Then like magic, after i went off the richter he bought her back. Its been a battle since day 1. I missed work a few times to be with her when she 1st arrived, she was too young to be alone too long. I dont know 2 nights on no sleep, my eyes are so dry, yet tears seem to be unlimited. Im an emotional wreak, probably a good time for bed. I know in my heart my Trudy has met her and is taking care of pup, they are together waiting for me.
  6. I KNOW exactly how you feel today, its a grieving day for me too. Im sorry you lost 2 so close. I only had pup a short while, but they do wiggle into your heart so quickly. My thoughts are with you.
  7. Jintas not happy at all. Shes waiting for pup. The vet gave Jinta a booster and a good look over, she seems 100% healthy. Thank god. I have cleaned and disinfected EVERYTHING. Thanks again, we will be ok, just not yet. missing little Jazza like crazy.
  8. Thank-you, from me and Jinta, this sucks.its hard. Jazza was so needy and i gave her my all. She came to me at maybe 5 wks of age. She came from a bad person, in bad conditions. I fed her well, gave her love, warmth, and she was looking SO healthy. The vets says she was probably weaker because she missed feeds on her mum, immunity wasnt as strong as what it would have been?. thanks for yr thoughts everyone.
  9. hi. yesterday pup became sick, about 4 days after her shots. chip. rego... she went to the vets and i just got the call earlier am. She didnt make it. she passed to the bridge at about 2am last night. They said she died fast, apparently it went to her heart.. I dont know much about parvo, but her blood tests were showing abnormal white cell count, and they tell me it was parvo. I do know she was on a very healthy diet, she was getting nothing but the best. I never took her out...i did everything right. She came to me in a wierd way, I wanted to save her from people who knew too much, or nothing about dogs. She was taken from my home (without permission) by these people about 10 days ago, before she was returned, i have no idea where she was taken. Im sure she picked it up at that time. Jinta seems to know, and shes whimpering, and searching for pup, and looking at me for an explaination. Shes really fretting for her new friend. Jinta is having a booster shot in about an hr, we are going to go pick up Jazza. Im going to bury her next to Trudy, at mums. Goodbye Jazza you touched my heart little one. Trudy Blue is already up there waiting for you sweetheart. Go run with the butterflies, my baby JazzaD. rest easy Jazza one last goodbye picture for those who didnt meet the 'special' one.
  10. All i can offer is to give you my best wishes for you and your dog I have no idea what it is, please let us know when you find out tomorrow, goodluck.
  11. ;) Just tip a can of dog food infront of Jinta, Take a photo of the look on her face....take it to show your friend. On the odd occasion I have tried (for convieience sake) to feed canned food to her she looks at me like im outta my head/ and or trying to kill her. She KNOWS its Evil.
  12. OK K9 thanks again, I think its time I do make a booking, even if it is for Feb,06. I think a consult will be beneficial for both Jinta and myself, as we had lessons of basic obiedience at puppy age, with Hanrob guy, Steve someone...?Cant recall his name ATM. Time for more private lessons....this time,...with K9! I am guessing that after the initial consult we see what needs to be worked on, and go from there? How do I book in, do I have to go through your site?? I think its valuable spending some 'time and $$' on Jinta, to me, its priceless to gain a good understanding of my dog- its time and money well spent on a furkid I share my life with. ;) K9 my diary is also mapped out a bit, but I have Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays free. Have yet to buy an 06 diary!! Ok...so we are 1/2 way there...im 'motivated' to come see you, now got to get Jinta feeling the same. I cant wait to see you work K9.
  13. ;) Thanks k9 .. Here I was thinking she had "some" protective nature barking away those dogs..putting on a show.... Is there a way to improve her guard drive?? for when im out? Yes she goes wild when anyone arrives and im here.....but I doubt shes got it when im out, I suppose the only way to tell, is to send a stranger, neighbour to the door when im out??? Reading your thread on "drives" and trying to get my head around it,( its complex and I dont know what a drive toy is...) have you ever published a book, or dvd?might go to your site and try to learn something.... I WANT to understand all this. She loves to play, so could I use her 'play drive' to train her??? I have retreive, i have recall, I have tricks, I have response to my commands, I have control in almost every way except her protective side. How can I stop her from being 'loving' towards everyone, without turning her nasty. I just want her to have indifference/curious nature towards strangers NOT her bathing them with kisses. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, K9 I know how valuable it is.
  14. Ohhh dear.....Jinta LOVES Denta Stix.....are they a similar product??? my vet sells them..?? They are her absolute favorite, and she INHALES them while chewing - no matter what size I give her. Anyone know if denta stix are smae as greenies???? BTW i have yet to discover greenies, and will give them a miss. Another lesson learned thanks to DOL.
  15. Thank you for so many replies. K9 Jinta is protective at home, she is alert to noises, and i had 2 guys come and take an old wardrobe this morning, and she puts on a big barking show, growling etc. After a sniff, and knowing im ok I suppose she calmed, and let them in. She is not a nuisance barker, but my new neighbours tell me she whimpers, or squeaks. Staffy noises, not barking. I d like to send a stranger to the door when im out to see what her reaction is. She has protected me against dogs on another occasion, 2 larger dogs were getting too close and she was VERY vocal and put herself between us. She doesnt like to see me recieve a hug.....always barks. At an of lead park she will be social, but passive towards most other dogs. When on a lead she is social. I think her recent move turned her sooky for a while, I hope she regains her confidence soon. I am watching her mature in many ways. I would not consider buying a 'ready trained dog', thats not any sort of way to own a pet, its just a machine...with a purpose, and yes I would be afraid of a dog I didnt know from puppyhood. I like to try to understand my dog.dogs (one day) I know I can put my hand in Jintas mouth, anytime, and she wont bite, its about knowing your dog, maybe im wrong? I do plan on owning a Rotti in the future, not right now, I will wait for what I need - time to train and money to train, and my own home, as I dont plan to be living in rentals for too mucher longer. Those Rotti kisses look goood.. and I agree just the BARK is enough to make you jump outta your skin!! I avoided near death by a Rotti chained up in a front yard, I stood too close in chains reach and this poor dog LIVED on that chain. Never walked, etc. Yes I reported it and RSPCA did nothing.
  16. hey, I totally agree with the opinion that you must be able to handle your dog 110%. whatever the breed. This thread has helped me learn so much. I was confused and uneducated, now im aware of some important facts. Has anyone seen todays tele??? new laws now mean a $55'000 fine and up to a 2 yr jail sentence if your 'dangerous dog' attacks. a sign perhaps?? spooky! Five breeds of fighting dogs will be banned, including, American pitbull, japanese tosas and 3 un-named Argintinian and Brazillian fighting dogs. Some interesting attack figures of breeds.... top 10 breeds responsible for attacks in a 1 yr period- cattle dogs are 1st at 85 reported attacks, Rottweilers 2nd on 78 attacks, German shepards on 72 attacks, Staffords on 68 what the?? !!!!!!, Bullterriers on 40 and, wait for it....... Pitbull terriers on a measly 38!!!! also reported about 120 attacks by mutts or unknown breeds...(im guessing swf!!!) Jinta responds to my "whats that" command that puts her on alert, and barking, looking mean...i dont want to own a dog i cannot control, I have decided to stick with my little Jinta, just the 1 dog for me until I build my house. She isnt that hopeless, she looks the part, and will bark if told to. I have found it difficult to find rentals that will accept 1 dog, let alone 2!! Thanks for helping me reach my decision, I realize that a new pup or another dog just isnt right for me at this time. All of your opinions have helped. I am the last person who would want to add fuel to the fire of bannning breeds or promoting dangerous dogs, or dangerous behaviours. Im still waiting to buy my ban the deed wrist band!!!! edited to correkt my speeling....
  17. hi Nekbet, At 1st I was slightly put off by your 1st sentence, and all THE CAPITAL LETTERS, but, this is an open forum, and I have posted a question, and I honestly thank you for taking the time to reply to me with your genuine thoughts. I do realize there is alot to take into consideration regarding a new dog, and will NOT take any decision lightly. I dont just go out and buy dogs willy nilly. Those who know me on DOL know this. A few well respected responsible breeders have even offered me a dog in the past. I am reaserching protecton training, and have not gone out to buy a BIG dog, on a whim. Please dont assume I am ignorant or stupid(or that I would buy a pup, than go on holiday!!!there is no need to insult me, I put in 2-3 hours of excersize and play into Jinta) I originally posted regarding my dogs passive nature, this lead to talk of larger dogs. This was begun YESTERDAY, im simply looking at the options. I am now wondering if I can work with Jinta to help her guarding instincts, K9 may be able to answer if that is possible. I hope this does NOT end this discussion, I have learned quite a bit, and I now feel perhaps a trained protection dog isnt the best choice. Its good to be back..... thank you to everyone for the consrtuctive and educated advise. I didnt know 1/2 the information I know after 24 hrs of replies, thankyou for the education. edited to add: i am NOT repeat NOT rushing out for a pup, I am simply learning and considering options available to me.
  18. hi again, (cant sleep) I want to make it clear I dont want to own a dog that I cant handle. I am open to suggestion regarding best breed to suit me. (although I do love the rotti's looks) This is what I need. A dog that is friendly, playfull, social, and obiedent, a pet to live happily with Jinta(desexed female)and myself. I want the quality of a strong guarding instinct. At the same time, I want a dog that can socialize, and be a friend for Jinta. Barking can be a problem, Jinta barks at noises, and on command. I dont need a crazed barker.... I can train my dogs, but I believe some 1 on 1 with a trainer is valuable, Jinta got this early, and so would my new dog.(this time with K9. ) (Jintas training was obiedence only, i wasnt concerned with protection, silly me thought it came naturally, she was too young, to be honest I got trained so I could train her...)
  19. hey everyone, thanks so much for your thoughts and advise. I am going to consider getting a 2nd furkid, and yes, a big rotti is my 1st choice. Now as 'haven' has said, size of dog compared to size of me....im 45kgs and 5'3. I understand that two dogs are more expensive than 1.... So the dog would be my weight or exceed it. I dont fear large dogs, but I do have a healthy respect for those I dont know... I loved my sisters late rotti and we would cuddle up to share the lounge watching movies etc. I am physically strong for my height and weight, my work is physically demanding, how strong do you need to be to train a Rotti??? this may be where K9 comes into the picture..!! I dont jump in without thought, and im really giving this alot of thought. I didnt realize protection training wasnt legal, or that the dog would be considered dangerous, after having training.Wasnt aware of muzzle in public??? although it makes sense for safety, how can a muzzled dog protect me???? I have had an alarm at another residence, it went off for over 24 hrs while i was away once and police broke in to disconnect it. I dont believe alarms do much for us, people in general have become immune and annoyed by car/home alarms. back to base is great, although 10 mins to wait for police is too long. I have been robbed, while at home, and while out, and had car bashed up because of alarm, and had a stalkers(peeping tom) x3.i have had enough of people disturbing my peace, and my life. I used to have mace, and live in fear, im moving to a new place on Monday and I guess im thinking ahead, I really want a peacefull life. My idea now is to try and find more info on Rotti breed, do my research and then look into training. I realize all this isnt cheap, but i consider it $$$ well spent. Protection, friendship and loyalty that money cant buy!! K9,.......(your advise is gold, thanks sooooo much) I want a dog that I know will 'protect ' me, Jinta, and our home. I also want a close bond with my dogs, is this possible after training??also would they get along, if only 1 has training?? ideally if the larger dog who i will train could protect myself and Jinta, I have nightmare of coming home to find Jinta gone...can they be friends??? id be more inclined to buy a pup, toilet train, house train, and then have formal training done, I may be wrong but I feel this would strenghten any bonds id have with the new dog, and allow jinta to adjust. love the posts everyone i had a laugh reading this tonight, and YES IM BACK on DOL and the net, although i will need to update all contacts, 7 months away from the net!!!. Its nice to be back. anyone want to pm me, with rotti info please do, excersize needs, temperment, size of male/female, anything important i need to know...
  20. Thanks for replys.... Jinta is way too people friendly, dog friendly, bla bla bla. I am moving to a new house next week and I can aquire another dog, although if I raise it same way as I have Jinta, will i end up with a passive HUGE dog??? I do need a protection dog, I dont want either dog to feel isolated, I like Rotti breed or GS. Do these breeds come with "built in" protection nature???? just the size of a large dogs mouth and the bark is enough to scare me.... Im a little confused, about how the two would get along, id hate to have dog fights... thanks so much for any help or advise.
  21. Heya I have a staffy now aged 2 1/2yrs. She is a lovley pet, she likes other dogs, and other people. I see this as a good thing, however... I chose Jinta, staffy.. because I wanted a dog with a bit of muscle and the ability to protect me if needed, and also be a family pet. I have had home robbed while i was inside, home alone, before i got Jinta. Girl living alone, I sometimes feel and am vunerable. I feel dogs are a great way to be protected, legally!! She is extremly passive around other dogs, and wants to greet most people she meets, I have seen her react badly (barking crazy like) towards 1 person in her life so far. Jinta is spoilt, indoors(sleeping on a suede lounge as I type) she lives a good life, and has never been treated badly, or punished never hit....yet she is timid and flinches sometimes....??? I dont know if she would "protect me" if needed, she does bark when someone embraces me in a hug..so there is something of protection or jelousy going on. Im broke/moving house and cannot afford training atm. But I would consider it in near future. I wonder if I should get another dog...a larger dog, to be the protector?? Another staffy, or a big Rotti???? i dont really want 2 dogs but if Jinta cant/wont protect I will seek another one who can...... I certainly am NOT seeking to get a dog and make it crazed, I just want peace of mind that my dog can and WILL guard me, and our home. I think a dog who will kill you with kisses serves no good as personal protection!!! k9 any advise?? does it sound as though she could be trained as a protection dog? or would it be advisable to get another dog, and try to raise it differently , or look for certain personality traits??? (btw:K9 she no longer sleeps on bed, she knows she can only sleep in HER bed now..I am making changes you advised long ago !!!) Jinta now has 99% perfect recall, sit, stay, lie down, gimmie 5....etc she certianly isnt stupid!!
  22. yeah mums dog gets this too, shes little chi x.... I have been minding her when her sacks filled up and needed emptying..... its happened to me minding her a few times now. So id reccomend reading up a bit, getting those latex gloves and a large box of tissues.... Its not that hard to empty just a bit icky. Id be trying a new improved fibre rich diet to try to fix it before surgury.. mums dog is fine for a feww weeks, and then they flare up, and strangley enough mums "operation happy" vet hasnt reccomened any surgury as far as I know. goodluck .
  23. Thanks pgm, I will make that a rule as I did with 'sit' and 'lie down' and 'stay'..... I have perfect sucess with those commands. I suppose me chasing her, is making it a really fun power game... I am going to invest some real time and energy into this total recall, its for HER sake.
  24. Thanks PGM i am ready to take it ALL in !!! the park im thinking of is usually completley deserted, we can be there for hours completely alone. But now I think about it, I will start her at home. All over again. She will walk off lead really well, she never goes further than 2- 5 metres from me, usually she is by my side, this is when I have taken her on long walks, and through parks. I have let her walk by my side home(we live in a quiet dead end)and she can restrain herself from chasing the 5 cats cheekily laying on the sidewalk across the road. so, shes got SOME control happening, just not always. Birds and other dogs are of interest. She just wants to play, but its just not cool to go running over for a play to strangers willy nilly. :D Ive spent enough time chasing her that I avoid other dogs, and restrain her as soon as I see one, pray to god, she hasnt seen it first, people JUST LOVE being charged at by a hypo nutter over friendly staffy. Training her, or retraining her is going to be a task. I wouldnt set her up for immediate failure by taking her to a dog park right away... I will be taking very small baby steps. Id like to teach her a drop comand as well, we are seeing K9 soon as possible for recall, and control. Her graduation day would be recall sucess at a 'real dog park' dare I dream????
  25. Thanks angelsun those tips are great. Jintas recall is selective also, but its the other way around.... shes fine at home.... she will come inside when called, BUT if we are out, at the park, and she spots another dog, shes off like a bullet to try for a play.... She sometimes goes 'pretend deaf' when im calling her while we are out. I trained her mainly at home, is this why the outside world is so exciting and distracting???? Im going to take a LONG peice of rope to the park, and some treats, we are going to practice recall. id love any more tips.....
