  1. hey dyzney, could you pm me with suggested size, price, postage etc for a soft crate? also, do you sell shade thingies? like a little shelter for saxon whilst we are at obedience training? nothing too flash, just want to keep him out of the sun as much as possible. we train on a saturday afternoon on an open oval and it gets pretty hot. suggestions???
  2. i couldn't resist, hardly what i'd call a hot day here in gods country, but had to have a go!!! i was amazed at how much those little things swelled up!!! i was more amazed to come home from work and find it still on saxon!!! i thought for sure he'd take a disliking to the new thing around his neck. very "cool" product meg. thanks heaps, i think you have become the unofficial guru on keeping dogs cool!!!
  3. just received mine in the post today. damn weather has gone all overcast and bearable. just yesterday, we had temperatures of 36 degrees!!!! looking forward to seeing the difference on my boy
  4. thanks guys for your rersponses. it seems cages are the way to go. i'd love to keep him in the cab with me, but he gets too excited and has pawed my arm a couple of times and the steering wheel has been jerked. not good! i know!! dual cabs dont have enough tray space for me. so a box down one side and cages down the other and ladder rack up top and trundle tray down below. done! thanks again
  5. is that for fear of them fighting, or being flung into each other? my concern with cages is, if you have an accident they get flung around all over the joint into a hard cage. i know a harness does offer as much restraint... i really am unsure about whats safest for the dogs.
  6. so i'll be getting a new work ute soon, and have to think about toolbox setups etc. i would like to know peoples opinions on cages or harnesses. if i have two dogs on the back, should they be caged seperately?? thanks in advance for suggestions.
  7. i agree steve!!! thank you!!! you have just saved saxons nuts for a few more months at least!!!
  8. so sad, my mums goldie "pleasure" was 17 too when it had to be pts. i bet elliots tail is still wagging til the end.
  9. thanks to everyone who replied, especially "sas"! your reply was far more information than i expected. thanks for the photos and link. the reasons for considering are: saxon is a humper!!! :champagne:the sight of his blue bath towel is enough to set him into air hump mode!!! its kinda like a reverse moonwalk but with a bit more hip motion and less ankle and knee movement!!! it is a classic, at home, but a bit embarrassing in public! he is very easily excitable around other dogs and hard to get to focus when he reaches that point. its hard to catch him early everytime. i wasn't sure about how it works but after seeing the diagrams(again, thanks so much sas) its clear that it stops testosterone production. the reason i was considering it as alternative to nutting him was because my breeder suggested that i give him at least twelve months before snipping because the prostate, especially, needs testosterone to develop fully. this was the latest research thingy she just finished reading. females were six months and before first season. i dont proclaim to know all the information needed to make an informed decision and thats why i thank you all for your information. at least now i can go and speak to a vet and have a bit of an idea on whats going on. it can be information overload sometimes when at the vet and being a male, it takes time to process these things, then i walk out , get in the car, and "duh" i forgot to ask this... and then theres another $80...at least now i can prepare
  10. hi everyone, can anyone point me to a website or give advice on the male implant that stops the need for desexing. i have a seven month old amstaff that i am considering desexing. my concerns are the disadvantages of doing it too early. i dont want to start a debate about what age to desex, rather i just want to explore my options. i've heard from a few vpeople about this implant or shot, but only very limited info. i'd like to know if it is permanent or not? if it stops testoterone production or just makes them shoot blanks so a link to a website, or possibly contact details of someone who knows about this stuff would be greatly appreciated. to nut or not to nut
  11. hi winterpaws, i'm fairly new to dol, and i have to say i like the ideas you have and the links. i'm actually looking to build some agility gear soon and a new kennel this weekend. i noticed you are from central coast as well, i was wondering if you know of anyone where i could take a footy jersey and get in converted into a dog coat for my amstaff? i would really appreciate any referrals. i am a male, i may be handy but sewing and crotchet and knitting just isn't my thing!!! ha ha. give me a hammer any day
  12. hi newamstaffowner, speak to your breeder, other amstaff owners, go to a show and speak to exhibitors. "pin head", is not a proper technical term. it was explained to me this way, you know how amstaffs have broad, boofy, well muscled heads when they mature? if you chop off his bits, he can no longer produce testosterone, which he requires for growth development. take that away and the muscles in and around his head may not develop fully(i've been told these are some of the last muscles to develop) leaving him with a pointier appearance. i have looked at other bully type dogs and staffies and have asked some of the owners if they were desexed and how old they were when they got done. and sure enough, the ones which were generally smaller looking were done early on. and the really muscular ones still had their bits intact. coincidence maybe. i'm not sure, but you can be sure of one thing, saxon,s keeping his tackle until i'm advised otherwise. dont worry about the humping too much, its a good conversation starter, and its funny, unless he makes contact and you dont want any unplanned little ones flying around. as far as humping you. dont allow it! saxon did this for a couple of weeks, but i pushed him away and ignored him. he soon learned that he cant do that to me.
