  1. Our beagle pup loves to "help" with the washing too. He doesn't chew items though or run away. We just make him sit when I am loading washing and if he does get anything that has dropped we "bhaa" at him and tell him "give it" which he does. But because he loves being around so much especially when I am hanging the washing....I now let him "help" . This is what I do. I put the washing basket on a small table that he cannot reach and I put the basket of pegs on the ground (they are chunky pegs, plastic only and no springs) I say "get the peg" and as soon as one is in his mouth I say "ta" and he gives it to me.....so I guess I am in the process of training him to pass the pegs. He is having so much fun doing that that he doesn't even worry about the clothes. So maybe look for a creative way to challenge his mind. That said...I am a stay at home mum with a little extra time that some one who works...so not sure if that is the solution to your problem but.......it was just food for thought! added: I guess it is like little kids. Don't focus as much on what they can't do as sometimes the repetition falls on deaf ears....focus more on what they can do and lits of praise....
  2. AHHHAAAHAHAHAHAH! My Beagle does this too! Disgusting but.....he prefers poo of the feline variety. Thanks very much to the all wandering cats in our neighbourhood? Our cats are inside cats only and he likes to try and sneak in to the kitty litter. Oh and the other favourite pass time is trying to get the lid of the nappy bucket.......EWWW!
  3. I feed pro plan dry food and pro peak roll along with chicken necks, sardines and the odd bit of yoghurt. I just buy the pro plan when it is on special if I see it and then get three or four bags???? From other threads I have read....I think that cheaper food just requires you to feed more which = false economy. i.e you may only pay half the price but have to feed twice the amount?! Not sure how much you would save??? I am also interested in what others have to say........especially re the natural BARF diet....does this work out cheaper???
  4. Thanks guys, more great ideas.......hadn't heard of either canex or sentinel for fleas/ticks....
  5. Great, will try some heart this weeks and see how he likes it. THANKS!
  6. Thanks for the reply. I tried Baxta on Eagle pack as this is one of the ones recommended but, he didn't like it? Sounds like BARF diet is popular. And, I wondered about other raw meats like heart. Is liver ok?
  7. I lOVE that photo of your beagles!!!! Am looking into the BARF diet but need to do a little more research. Thanks for the advice.
  8. Thanks for your reply....Had completely forgotten about eggs. Will add that to Baxtas diet.
  9. Can you give Sasha's blend to puppy's for added extras or is it purely for athritis. Just wondering?
  10. Hi there, I have a 12 week old beagle and would love your oprnions on a few things.....I am following breeders reccommendations which I am really happy with but just curious what others do?! Q1-What dry food do you use...I am currently using pro plan (puppy formula) Q2-What other food do you use as well (if any)....I am giving pro peak roll, some chicken necks. (cut up and put in a kong) and also some yoghurt and sardines. Not all on the same day but as added extras. Q3-What flea and tick treatments do you like...I am using fidos flea and tick rinse. Q4-What toys are favourites in your house...we like the kong, empty yoghurt containers to lick the remaining yoghurt from, a small soft toy rattle (cheekily stolen from our 1 year old bub within 5 minutes of BAXTA arriving at his new home) and a stuffed toy that came home from the breeders. Q5-What games does your dog/puppy love...Baxta loves playing with my son in his cubby house, doing crazy zoomies and fetching his toy rattle as well as......Ripping out the Bromeliads in my garden Q6-if you had to give one peice of advice to dog owners, what would it be??? Would love your input.... OH! One more thing! Have added a link for you all to see pics. http://s672.photobucket.com/albums/vv90/cfa31/
  11. It needs to be an enzyme-based cleaner used according to the instructions. I would imagine that a timber deck may require more than one or two applications, but I don't really know the answer to that one. Is his crate appropriately sized? It is very unusual for a pup to go in his crate unless forced to, if the crate is the correct size. There are average times for house-training, but these aren't applicable to an individual pup. Just do the best you can to avoid accidents and reinforce good habits and you will get there. Thanks for your reply. I will invest in an ppropriate cleaner. Any suggestioins
  12. Hi there, Having a wee problem ('scuse the pun) with our puppy, who is 12 weeks. He is great going to the toilet in the right spot (on the grass) if we are outside with him. But, has taking to peeing on the deck instead of the grass if he is outside by himself. He has access to the grass at all times, except if we are out he is on the deck or in his crate. At night when he is in his crate, he is good and lets us know when he needs to go. So that doesn't seem to be a problem. Occassionally he has peed in his crate, if he was in there for an hour or so during the day, even if he had just gone to the toilet, which is why we have been leaving him on the deck (easier to clean up)!? I am praising him when he does go in the right spot. And I like that he has access to outside rather than being in his crate too much. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions....or is it just a time and patience issue. How long does it take for a pup to be toilet trained on average!? Also, what product should I use to clean up his messes. I have Tried vinegar and also an enzyme based detergent, but it doesn't seem to stop him from going in the same spot. Thanks in advance.
  13. We have our beagle inside at night in a crate and he sleeps happily in there. The crate works well for us and in summer we will have a spot outside where he can go if he chooses to. I am happy to have him inside at night if he uses his manners and is well behaved....a big expectation when they are puppies and this is why the crate works. We know he cannot get into mischief. Eventually we want him to have a bed rather than a crate. This is just what works for us with this pup. Our last dog was a stafford and he was an outside dog. We always had a coat on him in winter and he was fine. This is what worked for us with that particular dog. He lived till 15. Having had an outside dog and now an inside/outside do, I do prefer the option of having them inside at night. BUT... If you don't or cannot have your pup inside for whatever reason, I would just try and keep puppy warm as possible....it does sound like he could be cold????? I am sure that your dogs are spoilt and well loved.....you wouldn't be concerned and asking advice otherwise. Just do what feels right.

    Beagle

Great post. Thankyou for your experience with the lure coursing, I bet they have fun...I too have been wondering where all the beagle posts are??!! We have a new beagle pup and still have alot to learn about this lovely breed. So the more info the better. I will be sure to check out the lure coursing pics.
  15. P.S Our previous boy was a stafford and was the most beautiful gentle soul. Especially with children. Not so much with dogs. He was a bit naughty as a pup but no more than expected. He lived to the grand old age of 15 and a half.....and we sadly had to have him put down earlier this year:( You will get many lovely years and much enjoyement.
  16. We brought our beagle home a week ago and he too was uninterested in his food for a day or so. Just having little bits here and there. We tried some other food and found that he enjoys the pro plan for puppies and he seems to prefer it with some mince added to it or mositened with water. Also, we figured out that he prefers to eat off a plate and doesn't like the stainless bowl that we brought him. Although is happy drinking water from it. Go figure???? Maybe try changing his bowl. I am no expert but it seems to have worked for us. Goodluck
  17. Just had a read of this article...it is great and reassures me that we are on the right track. We are doing alot of those things. Sitting before food, pats, going in and out and putting collar on.
  18. Thanks anyway...i am sure someone will suggest a good one. Caboolture is too far, you're right
  19. You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for all your great advice. I am on the sunshine coast any reccommendations for pre schools are welcome.
  20. I suppose for what it is worth, different dogs/personalities respond differently and perhaps if Baxta doesn't respond to other methods....then pushing him away may work? So I understand where you were coming from. I tend to use my voice, used to doing this with kids..... so the raised voice I am good at!!!! and I really like the "leave it" command. So will definately try that. Baxta is being taken outside alot too for the toilet. So, I am sure this will eventually work and I do put him outside sometimes when I cannot fully supervise him. Much easier to clean up an accident outside on the deck than inside. ;) Thanks though for your advice. Everyones advice is appreciated and I am sure me and others will never agree with all of it. So I guess I will take what appeals to me the most.
  21. What would the reccomended training requirement of a BEAGLE pup be. Not including anY puppy preschool/obedience classes (yet to enrol in one of these as we will wait till he is fully vaccinated). Just what day to day training do others do with their pups. Or what others reccomend. Currently we are probably doing 3-4, 10-15minutes sessions a day as well as general random things eg. sitting before patting, coming inside and outside and waiting for food. Calling his name, not jumping and of course toilet training. Looking forward to hearing what some experienced owner/trainers do! ;)
  22. No problems, I will keep them coming
  23. Here's what I think we will be doing with regards to my questions. I think I have worked out what feels right and what seems to be working. We brought a crate (soft) Baxta really likes it and this is where he sleeps and stays now, when I cannot be there to watch him 100%. We are keeping this where his inside bed is eventually going to be. Glad to get rid of his box...the crate is much nicer. Bubby and pup are having lots of fully supervised time together where we encourage Baxta not to jump + lots of praise when he doeas the right thing. The rest of the time when they are both together I am trying to keep her higher than his level (in a walker). This seems to be helping calm him down. Seven year old has been told to make Baxta sit before ALL pats and if he does jump he is saying NO! and walking away, only giving attention when he sits. He has nearly stopped jumping. He has some time outside by himself but only 10 mins or so and othertimes we are out there with him. Because he really just likes hanging with us, I think we should have called him shadow. He just had a lovely time in the garden with me for nearly and hour.....until he decided to roll in fresh mulch and get all dirty! Then off for a bath it was. RE: the toilet training....went all night last night until 5am this morning.... ;) and I think that persistence is the key with daytime accidents. And am going to mop the floors with vinegar and water. If that doesn't get rid of the smell I will try the enzyme washing powder and water. It seems to be falling into place.
