  1. OK thanks-should I treat when she sits in a heeling pattern? Correct her is she does not do the auto sit?

For auto sit I would ask for a sit every time you halt in a heeling pattern - they soon catch on  This is where anticipation of the next command actually helps you  After a while test the auto sit by halting and not asking for a sit and see if they sit on their own without the command.
  2. I hesitate to post because I don't want to re-start a discussion about ADT but I need some advice.

I have joined an Obedience Club and Cindy has worked out the "Stay" command well. In my ignorance I thought -"this will be easy" and I moved onto the automatic sit instead of the stand. The thought of this as an easy task has disappeared!

So how can I re-train to the automatic sit.

Please use the KISS method in your replies (Keep It Short 'n Simple) as this owner is a novice!

    Thanks heaps

    Sue and Cindy

  3. this may be a daft question but how do you build drive?

    Sue & Cindy

"Heeling", is different to walking. You don't heel when you walk,.....you walk.

Making it "not fun" to pull is usually the quickest way to fix it.

Also, people with problem dogs that need motivation for "heeling" (ie; for trialling) are best to focus on building the dogs drive, rather than to think up "fun games" to try to improve things. The dog will be having loads of fun, if it is exercising its drive in full flight

  4. I did the ndtf course and loved all of it bar ADT. I thought ADT were an embarrassment and a disgrace ! The majority, NOT ALL, but the majority of Instructors were so puffed up , strutting around too full of their own importance to know anything on how to help dogs or their owners........and very few knew anything about dogs and how to train them. In the time I had to attend I saw situations that were borderline to downright cruelty....ignorant instructors telling ignorant owners what to do with their dogs. So, on this alone I am glad they have gone belly up !

I am sorry that you experienced ADT in this way. I trained my dog there for 2.5 years. My daughter trained her dog there and my son was training there. None of us saw any cruelty. I never came across any ignorant trainers. If we ever had a question during the week they were a phone call away. One or two trainers may be more difficult to relate to but that is true in any situation. Those trainers became our friends as did class members. We never got to thank them or say good bye. We have no way of contacting people.

There are always going to be people who relate better to one method of training or company better than others. I think to call them an embarrassment and a disgrace is far from the truth. Not so sure about the management.
