Nic oh lah

Hi everyone, just wanting some opinons and advice regarding play between our existing GSD (she's almost 2) and our new puppy, 11wk old Border Collie. When Sophie is playing with him in the yard she's a bit rough - putting his head in her mouth, pinning him in her teeth by his neck, and pawing at him. I'm thinking it's just normal play along the lines of "i'm the boss, don't forget it" but just wanting to check that this behaviour is ok - it goes on for the first 10 minutes he's in the yard, then she settles down and it's all good.

He doesn't cry or whimper, and he keeps running after her and biting at her toungue and muzzle, and sniffing her butt, so I think he's happy enough, but when she lopes up to him he hides between my legs. So Chase seems happy enough, but just wanting other's opinions based on what i've said, as she's like 5 times his size at her 38kg so yeah - rather safe than sorry.

In the morning we put him in the yard at about 8am - i'm home at 12noon for lunch and bring him inside where he tends to just crash out and sleep in his crate - I leave him inside (not shut in the crate) until i get home at 5ish and then let him out for another Hour with Sophie - then he comes inside, has his dinner and spends the night inside. When he's a bit bigger and can hold his own a bit more physically i intend to let him sleep outside with Sophie or have them both sleep inside together.

I'm going to cancel my order because i have alot of other costs at the moment with puppy number 2! Maybe next time though (-:

I'm not comfortable with the idea of kennelling my dogs, mainly because i'm such a control freak - lol. We just went away this past weekend and I have a very good freind who is Chase's breeder and she walks and talks dogs, her "day jobs" if you will are dog walking + dog sitting, and she's North Brisbane - she made Sophie very happy and spoiled her with walks and runs and games and training - she was probably disappointed when we got home - haha. She'd had a ball with her "Aunty Sam" taking care of her.

I trust her 100% with my dogs and highly recommend her to anyone North Brisbane that would like to leave their pooches at home and have them walked and fed by an honest person - PM me if you want her details for next time, I can't recommend her enough.

My hubby has said with our new pup he's happy to come to Obediance and Agility with me insofar as doing classes so both dogs get to train insofar as he's available, when he's on shift work he might not be able to make it in which case i'll do half a class with each dog - but then I consider obediance training to be more of a distraction proofing and socialisation activity than actual training - that I tend to do at home.

Same, although I do sometimes shop at a store near me that is a rehoming centre for AWL, so there are some animals instore being the store owners cat and dog that hang around in the shop and some desexed animals waiting to be rehomed, and they've assured me they screen purchasers for suitabliity first, though you can't be sure.

For sure - just have to wait till his next shot so another fortnight till he's 14wks and then we'll bring him down for Puppy School and socialisation. He's a bundle of fun - so cute.

MASSIVE though - he's so much bigger than his sisters already and sooooo fluffy - i'm looking down the barrel of a BIG BOY which is what I wanted so couldn't be happier.

Things were said - I know what I believe and what happened and I know I have a massive support team of lovely people behind me - I know I did my best in my situation, and someones posting on an online forum doesn't change that.

I'm now sorry i replied and perpetuated the drama - call it emotions. Let's move on - I respect the person that clearly hates my guts as they're clearly passionate about their breed - i'm sorry they haven't taken the time to contact me personally and fully understand the situation, and that they have jumped to some conclusions - read my past posts and i'm sure i've done the same thing at some stage, even if i haven't been quite so colourful with my posts - they can perceive me and my actions however they want - think what you want people - me and the people actually involved know the whole story, and it's unfortunate that the other person didn't, and for one i'm truly sorry if my lack of depth of detail has given this person some really wrong impressions - but i think we all have a right to decide what we will and wont share on a public forum and i stand by everything i've said.

Let's all just toughen up - this is a public forum - everyone just play nice and love your dogs, and stand by your own convictions, and we'll all be just fine.

This is a play tent I bought online at crazy sales website. It's texture is just like normal tent and it has mesh all around it that we are able to see through. We can cover the top part.

I brought him to the vet last week and the preliminary results says that it is UTI. I collected the urine after he finish his anti biotics and gave it to the vet last night. But she turn it back because we are suppose to take the urine sample 2 days after he finish his medication(which we were not told).

We live in a rented unit(not apartment) and the backyard is secured. The yard is not big and all the grass area is now mainly sand. He does his toilet on the sand and I clean up after him each time.

He drinks quite a lot of water since the first day he came.

My plan is to bring him for proper obedience class after he finish the puppy school. I plan to teach him to play frisbee, is that considered a dog sport? If not, what do you recommend?

I give him Kong filled with treats to keep him occupied but he doesn't really play with it. He got a squeaky toy which he likes a lot. He also got a couple more toys to let him chew on but he also don't really play with them. I was thinking of buying a ball that when you roll it, the treats will come out. Will that be good for him?

He'd probably like a treat dispensing ball if the treats are something he likes. With the kong try putting a little bit of peanut butter round the inside of the opening and that might interest him a bit better. My little boy loves any toys that are fluffy or squeak.

In terms of dog-sport I would consider dog sports to be things like agility and obediance trialling, and possibly fly-ball depending on your thoughts on hips - i'd personally rather not do that with my boy but i will have him trailling in agility once he's older than 12months (try to not encourage jumping games until he's 12months as that lets their hips grow nice and strong). Obediance and Agility are great fun for dogs and people - and also with my boy I intend to do Herding - teach him to be a sheep dog! There's lots of clubs you can join to do these sorts of activities and have a happy dog that loves to work for you. Even a small yard as long as it's secure will be better for him than a tent or crate for long periods of time, as long as he's got shelter, shade and somewhere warm to sleep he'll be a happy boy, and access to lots of fresh water - my by guzzles water non-stop! If he goes toilet outside then leaving him outside during the day when you're away as long as you're sure he can't get out would be best - again, get a small kennel for him so he has a safe hidey-hole to sleep in and he'll probably be a very happy boy.

Above all just give him love - it sounds like you do love him to bits, its just alot of work and i understand that, i'm finding it really hard work and he's not my first dog. It's so great to see well trained, well adjusted happy dogs.

Whee! In a few hours my lovely little boy goes back to the breeder for a long weekend while we go away on a short Sunshine Coast holiday - whoooooooo. I will miss him, really I will but i'm looking forward to a few nights break from puppy-hood.

I know!!! But good news!!!! I'm in Bris for the weekend, and i'm staying till Monday night so i'll be at obedience!!!!!!!! What group are you in now, we'll probably be in different groups now But I have been taking Lottie to Toowoomba so maybe i'll just slip into the group you're in, hehe!!! I think i'll make the effort to get back to the bris one at least every 2nd weekend!!

We're still in Group 1 because I got really sick for a couple of weeks and one week it was rained out so we've really only been to 2 classes without you! Plus Sophie has gone through a bit of a "im a snot" phase seemingly having alot to do with our Foster Boy Vader who's been picking on her a bit and encouraging her to jump on us etc, so looking forward to knuckling down again!

I have brought him to the vet already and it's confirmed that he has an UTI.

I remove the toilet area from his tent and put it in the kitchen so he could go toilet there but he still doesn't go.

I am worried that he would not go to the toilet when I am not home. I am trying to get the puppy to get used to our lifestyle. Please understand my situation as I want the best for my puppy.

We don't want to gang up on you or make you feel bad but there's so much responsibility with having a puppy, and you really need to make a secure safe outside area for him (get star pickets and 4foot high dog wire from bunnings and make a pen 3m x 3m or something with a crate in it for shelter and shade) for daytime - if you want him inside at night with you then commit to getting up every 3hrs (at least) and taking him outside to go toilet. If you can't do that (with my 10wk old BC puppy he pees non-stop and won't hold it that long) then get him used to the pee pads furthur away from his bed - i'd think at least 2metres and use the same command when he's on it that you use outdoors when he eliminates - if need be put one of the pads outside so he gets used to them and toileting on them and he should then get the idea indoors too. Personally if you're lucky enough that he'll hold on all night then set your alarm for 1am then 4am and take him outside for a wee and poop, and then when he's older he can stay outside at night - mine will be when he's big enough to hold his own with my rambunctious full grown German Sheperd!

Yes is sucks getting up in the night, and you might be tired in the morning, but honestly, tough bickies -that's what you need to do to keep your puppy happy and healthy till he's old enough to hold it all night without getting infections! I imagine with a UTI infection and holding it that long he'd be in pain! That's cruel!

I think you are being really unfair if you want him to get used to "your lifestyle" if your lifestyle isn't compatible with that of a happy healthy puppy and i'd wonder why you got a puppy in the first place! If you want the best for your puppy then you need to make sacrifices of funds to make an appropriate enclosure and of sleep to let him out to toilet.

Again - i dont want to be mean, but it all sounds really unfair for this little puppy.

Exactly! I'm hoping you purchased your puppy from a registered ethical breeder? My breeder is there for support and questions like this, plus she'd have never sent a puppy away before 10wks, and never sent him to his new home whilst sick, and not have sent him to a home where he'd be alone for a long period of time in a 1.4m diamter enclosure that housed his bed and his toilet! That is really not a good environment for a puppy Nicola - i'm glad you're on DOL so we can help you out but if I were you i'd be calling the breeder for some advice and definately giving the puppy a bigger area - mine whilst alone and at night is in the dining and living area which is blocked off and tiled so he cant destroy anything and theres room for his crate and at the otherside his toilet area. When my foster Greyhound leaves he'll be outside during the day and we'll start more toilet training then.

As you've been told at least twice in other threads the puppy will not pee where he sleeps, and you need to give him somewhere where it's appropriate to pee AWAY from where he sleeps. If you're making him pee in the same place where he sleeps you are forcing him to try and hold on, and as you've said a few times that he's peeing blood with a UTI then i'm very concerned that you're doing this, especially as you have been told over and over to give him plenty of opportunities to toilet and to move the toilet away from his bed.

I am worried about your puppy as you haven't answered questions about whether or not you've had him to the vet, and you have been told to move the toilet away from the bed and still are asking what you can do?

Puppyhood is killing me - lol. Chase is lovely but I can't stand wee and poo in the house (although god bless the person who invented puppy pee-pads) and having to constantly watch what he's chewing on! Can't wait till he's a growed up! I love him dearly but as documented in another thread the puppy thing is really not my scene, lol.

That said taking Sophie on at 18months with no training she was still pretty much a puppy in her own mind and a handful but nowhere near as frustrating as a puppy, lol.

Hubby put pup in the dining room and penned him in so he was safely playing with his toys and had access to his food and water and crate, took me by the hand, put me in the car, drove me to woolworths, and bought me chocolate. LOL! He knew how to calm me down. I just needed to be away from the puppy mess for half an hour to appreciate him again - he's a bundle of joy, i love him dearly, but geez puppies are hard work.

It's embarrassing admitting i had a little puppy related breakdown but it's true! I just can't wait for him to be a big boy, lol. And PMS can probably be attributed alot of the blame. lol.

No need to be ashamed, I had a total breakdown when Zoe was a pup, I would walk into the kitchen, see poo, wee and chewed items fro bench surfing and broke down into tears.... I thought it was just me

I just had a bit of a breakdown and just hugged him and cried - and the little shit once realising how good my tears tasted starting gnawing on my chin - LOL. He's such a sweet little boy but I wish they came toilet trained - lol. He was toilet trained but as he hasn't been in a house with carpet he gets confused as he thinks it's ok to go anywhere that isn't on tiles.

Hi guys, my BC puppy doesn't like to go toilet in his play tent and he would hold on till we bring him out. I am worried because when he came to us last week, he had an urinary tract infection. He would hold from 10+pm till I bring him out in the morning at about 6am. Is that all right? He doesn't smell bloody after eating some anti biotics.

How old is your pup? 8 hours is a long time to expect a puppy to hold on, all of mine went in the middle of the night and occasionally twice a night for a month or so once they were home. Even now at nearly 3 one of mine still goes to the loo in the middle of the night.

What does the bolded part of your post mean? Why would he smell bloody? do you mean he had anti biotics for the UTI?

He is 9 weeks old. I have lay down a toilet for him in the play tent but he doesn't want to go. He doesn't make any sound at night which is why we thought he doesn't need to go to the toilet. He holds on till the next morning(6am) when I bring him out. Seems like it's not good for him. Tonight I will bring him out for toilet.

His UTI causes blood in his wee so he smell "bloody".

That is a really long time for a puppy not to go to the toilet. Also if this play tent has his bed or toys in there then he'll not want to toilet near them - he needs a toileting area further away from where he sleeps and plays, or better yet to be taken outside to go toilet during the night.

Yep - he was the biggest boofy boy and she expressed to me that he's going to be an amazing dog that she'd like to have around so I caved and now have a house full of pee - LOL - no really, he's stunning and a really sweet natured energetic little dog, of course he's a handful but he's going to be an amazing boy when he's all growed up!

Of course he'll have to meet Lottie! If she's a bit of a cougar maybe she can be his girlfriend - lol.

This 2nd dog thread is perfect timing! We bought home Chase last Friday and Sophie seems to like him but she's a big bouncy girl and he's so little - i'm worried she's a bit rough with him playing! I think she thinks he's a yucky cat! lol.
