  1. The chemicals and oils being sold as snake repellents do not work either, tried, tested and proven
  2. Please people, If you have been talked into buying these things and you have them in your yard, be aware they are not to be relied on. 3 dogs on the Mornington peninsula this year have been bitten as a result of the false sense of security they give. The dogs were all bitten in yards where the SPRs were installed and operating.
  3. Different metabolism and body structure of the snake, compared to mammals, mean a beheaded snakes head can stay awake and aware for 10 to 15 minutes. A beheaded mammal still has about 7 seconds of awareness before dying
  4. So sorry for the loss of your dog, its so sad to lose a pet like this. Im a great believer now in shade cloth as a deterant for snakes. If you have a run or an area that you can enclose with shade cloth. Stay safe this Summer guys and remember its dangerous and illegal to kill snakes, not to mention cruel and inhumane if you decapitate one. Very slow and terrifying death for a decapitated snake. Take care Baz Snake Catcher Victoria
  5. Unfortunately Sophies days may be numbered. The law of averages will catch up with her if her reflexes don't start going first. Sooner or later she will get bitten Persephone. I hope Im wrong. Do you have any photos of the snakes?

  7. Thanks Kelpiecuddles, he certainly seems happy enough and of course, I only would never watch show like this, Nevaaa
  8. Probably been done to death here but I thought Id ask the experts what the Big Brother experience is potentially doing to that dogs head. This dog has more personality than any of the housemates by the way.
  9. Youre right trinabean, my mistake
  10. The poor dog was not a hero but it was almost a victim. The child was never in any danger as the snake was trapped in netting when the dog killed it. I love all dogs but this story is another example of media exploiting peoples fear of snakes.
  11. Blackbirds and starlings are different birds, different habits ect, Its the starlings that are more of a problem in this country
  12. I read the snake was trapped in netting when the dog attacked, Ill try to find a link.
  13. I think anyone who lets the dog or cat kill wildlife should cop a fine, and if you encourage you dog to kill snakes then you don't like your dog very much. You might think your JRT is cool and can kill snakes without getting bitten but his days are numbered and you can look forward to watching your little mate die in pain or pay the vet bill, (doubt you will do that somehow). The law of averages will catch up with him or maybe he will get slow, but one day a snake will win. Train them not to attack our beautiful wildlife and you will be saving their lives.
  14. Thankyou jerojath.. this is a stupid article
  15. Yes, he is a carpet, nice size to. A common coastal carpet pyhton
  16. That's only for use on diabetic vampires Tazar. You can try it but don't rely on it. We have used sprays before but they are expensive and only last a short time, and their effectiveness is not reliable
  17. Being an ancient breed Guinea Fowl, are more than capable of dealing with snakes. Even ordinary chooks will gang up and kill a snake. These ground nesting birds have evolved with snakes in Asia and Africa and have learned how to handle the threat and protect their mates. They have evolved thick skin on their legs which can deflect a snake bite as well so poultry in general, but mainly Guinea Fowl, while they do attract rodents, are a good front line defence and warning system. In answer to Diva, the height of the mesh can be 1.5 meters in the Victoria but I would recommend 2 meters the further North you go
  18. Yes, please be aware, I have been busy with snakes all week here on the Mornington peninsula. The Repellers are a waste of money. As said, give the snake nowhere to hide, place water around the the perimeter of your property so snakes don't need to come and drink the dogs water, don't leave anything around that might attract rodents...ect, blah blah blah, but if removing all cover for snakes is not an option, as it is in many homes, then dogp roof the areas that are likely to be vulnerable. Many places use shadecloth and snake mesh to lower the chance of contact by making enclosed courtyards for dogs, kids and other animals to run in and be safe. Keep your local snake catchers number handy and if you see a snake, ring the catcher and keep a visual of the snake til he or she gets there. More infi on my website www.snakecatchervictoria.com.au and at my Facebook page Snake Catcher Victoria Australia.. Stay safe and remember snakes are protected, and don't bite unless they are in fear for their life or in pain. Here is some video from the other day . And a couple of days earlier in Mornington
  19. What about a service that people could utilise for training their dog? The trainers would themselves be trained in the use of the collar, People could come with their dogs and observe the training and be confident that their would not harass a snake if it should happen to come across it. Other wildlife like bluetongues and marsupials could be incorporated. Would need someone very good with dogs and experienced with the collar, (not me) and someone who knows snake and native animal behaviour and is licenced to supply the topic animal (thats me) Snake Aversion Therapy could take off. This way Joe Sixpack dosn't get his or her hand on the button with out watching the pro 1st I have a few plans and ideas if anyone wants to pm me.
  20. Its strange the emotion this subject has bought up. It almost like a religious ferver that the anti collar side argue.. And another thing, snakes do not pursue dogs.. Sorry guys.. been a long day and Ive been suffering fools for most of it
  21. In that case, one species of snake would smell different to the next species. not all species of snake smells alike as their habits and diets differ.. The bluetongue used could be kept in a snake enclosure prior to training maybe.
  22. Thanks for the answer Nekhbet, I am glad to get some confirmation of what I thought.
