  4. Is the goats milk getting a workout? Did the ultrasound show more than two? U/s showed four but now it's apparent that the girls were counted twice. So the two pups on the other side, were just tiger and dragon being April fools day tricksters Yep the goats milk is getting a work out, but if their mum's milk doesn't come down soon I'll have to switch to biolac. i would be keeping them on goats milk myself.... Are you using those tablets that you told me about before? they worked a treat for Minnos but took about 5 days to kick in.

  8. lol yes, going for the fifth time lucky, gosh who's deranged I guess why I think it matters if the semen is local or import is because the success rate for local frozen semen is around 85-90% for most vets who use frozen whereas the success rate for import semen is 40% - and that was before my spectacular misses came along to skew the odds. With import semen because you have so much more variables between collection and its ultimate use, even though frozen semen can live for a few hours its also probable that it could live for only a few minutes up to one hour - so exactly when to insert the semen / predicting when the eggs are mature becomes somewhat of an extrapolated guessing game. It helps if the bitch has had previous cycles/pregnancies already prog monitored, so if you've been using another vet who has done this, I would say stick with the vet who knows your bitch and her cycles because that is a really important factor. Some breeds freeze better than others and some countries (wrt semen country of origin) have better results than others. If its local frozen semen: Cragieburn, Monash, Sandown. I have used Frozen semen extensively in one of the same breeds that Lilli has (Anatolians of course) - I have missed only once using surgical Implanst. In hindsight this was my own fault as I should have used my gut instincts and not rely on the so called specialist vet... There are various methods used to freeze down semen with a lot of different ones being used abroad - this is one factor in deciding whether or not to import - I personally would prefer 'Camelot' semen as opposed to others as each breeding unit is counted after defrosting one pellet and ensures that there is enough viable mobile semen left once defrosted (properly and with the correct extender). The availability of the different extenders for the other systems must also be taken into account. Another thing to keep in mind is the progesterone machine itself. Each machine has its own calibration so switching from vet to vet at this important time could throw the results out significantly. My last experience with frozen semen is through Quakers Hill Vets (Blair and Matt) - very professional and know exactly what they are doing. Their machine reads 'higher' then normal - my last bitch was inseminated at 77 which is quite high (IMO) - result will be known on thursday (Due day) and according to the ultrasound has at least 6 pups onboard. Although each season can be totally different for the same bitch, having a 'ball park' season to compare with can help immensly - the Bitch that I missed had a very strange season hovering around 28 - 32 for around 6 days. She was implanted at 45 and did not take at all. Lilli is correct in saying that frozen semen can in fact live for only a few minutes - however it can also live for a number of days - not only hours. Storage is also important - I have my own storage container here together with my own shipper. This does not get opened anywhere near as much as one that is being used constantly so I hope I have a much more 'stable and consistant' environment for the little sperm... Ensuring the bitch is free from infection is also something that I look at. Any of my bitches go on a course of antibiotics BEFORE an implant is performed.
  9. Just an update on this thread. the OP has contacted at least two other Anatolian breeders, (myself included). Both of us has given the information in a timely manner. This included price and availability of puppies. The OP is actually on TAKAS waiting list for a puppy from her, lets just hope he has been honest with her in his intentions. I am sending Lilli a link to this thread incase she hasnt seen it yet.
  10. I own and breed Alpacas and my dog breeding side is also classified as part of my 'business'. I claim any applicable GST that is spent on the dogs (vet bills, feeding, transporting etc...) but I also PAY GST on any of my dog sales. Part of the ATO requirement is not to earn $20000 per annum in PROFIT but that your business must turn over $20k to be able to offset any losses incurred in the running of your business against any other income that you might have. I obviously lodge my BAS statement quarterly and have an accountant to do my business accounts yearly.
  11. I guess It's time that I contributed to this thread, I have probably sent around 80 pups throughout Australia, NZ, 'The world' and have great respect for what these 'professional pet transporters' do. Sure sometimes it costs a little bit more but quite often it is cheaper to book through them instead of going direct to the airline. Jetpets, Dogtainers and the likes have special 'bulk' pricing from the airlines and pass these savings on to us, the consumer. I always activate the 'free 6 week insurance' to ensure the pup is covered on the flight out and in case anything does go wrong. I never feed the animals beforehand - learnt that by my own mistake with a puppy that went to Hawaii - Pooh and wee everywhere when he arrived. I lodge the puppy at the latest time possible, and of course I make sure that the flight isnt delayed / heater working / any other problems. I contact my puppy buyer to let them know that the puppy has been delivered to the airport. If I cant make a flight time - then TOUGH - the puppy goes on a flight that I can make it to - as long as it is ok with the buyer. Only once has a flight been cancelled on me at the last minute - with me taking the puppy to Dogtainers office myself for a 'next day' flight. I have also had one puppy supposedly flying from syd - perth for another connecting flight, however in AAE ultimate wisdom, they decided it was better for this poor puppy to fly to melbourne first - needless to say it was a close call but he did make that connecting flight. It gets extremely hot in the cargo hold and I too try to avoid sending dogs in the middle of the day.
  12. My TWO litters of Anatolians are confirmed - one due 17th Feb the other due 20th Feb
  13. I would whole heartedly recommend 'Quakers Hill vet', Blair and his partner are excellent. *double thumbs up*
  14. As has been said before, the gestation period has absolutely NOTHING to do with the sperm or the day that AI (or natural mating for that matter) occurs. The gestation period for a canine is 63 days after OVULATION. If you dont know when your girls ovulate then it is purely guess work on what day they will come out. On the 'high' scale of progesterone testing (nmol), bitches ovulate between 15 - 21nmol (low scale = 5 - 7ng). Once ovulation occurs, it takes around 2 days for the egg to mature and accept the sperm. This window may stay open for minutes, hours or days. Invariably it will stay open for 48 hours. If a bitch is to be frozen inseminated then insertion is done around this 48-72hrs post ovulation as this is the time when most of the eggs will be 'ready'. Hope this clears it all up. I have just done a surgical implant (camelot method) which was implanted on Sunday 20th Dec. I will be looking at doing a Caesarian on either 18th or 19th Feb, which is 60-61 days post implant.
  15. I have two litters due - 19th and 24th Feb.... Both Anatolians....
