  1. Yes it can work I do shift work whic means 12 hour days or nights my dog copes very wel, she has a cat to keep her company and they get on very well. I generally work 3 shifts in a row and then have days off, which are spent with my dog she gets quality time from me before and after work and also on my days off. On the rare occassion I have to do 4 nights in a row I book both Sparkles and her cat into their holiday resort so they can have the attention and care they need and deserve allowing me get the sleep I need without neglecting them. I choose my breed of dog carefully and spent time getting her used to being left alone, she has plenty of toys and I leave some biscuits hidden so she can hunt for them while I am away. If the weather is going to be very hot I put the airconditioner on timer and make sure there is a cool room they can go to if necessary , she also has free access to the backyard. My neighbours are very good and if necessary would phone me at work if they thought either of my pets needed me to come home. Sparkles is so happy with the arrangement my neighbour never hears her barking and rarely sees her outside. In a nutshell yes you can work long hours and have a dog but you must do your homework and be prepared to give quality time to your dog when you are at home, just going for a walk isn't enough.
  2. I've used 3 pet insurance companies and moved to PetPlan nearly six years ago after problems with claims and exclusions by other companies. I have my dog and cat covered and have not had any problems with claims I have made nor with any queries I have had regarding the policy. I pay annually and reading the fine print it is clear most of the pet inusurers expect the full year to be paid if paying monthly especially if you have made any claim within that policy year.
  3. Pitty Huey didn't like his holiday and more of a shame for you because it only causes you to worry. I have nothing to do with Bluegum Boarding Lodge except for being owned by a Great Dane and cat who love going there for their holidays, I call it their "Holliday Resort". Be assured all breeds of dogs are welcome there and there are lots of small to medium sized dogs there. I happily drive out leaving them knowing they are well looked after and are happy, as a result I am able to enjoy my holiday too. The kennels and cattery are clean and all the animals I have seen there are happy. I have suggested Bluegum Boarding Lodge to a number of people and no one has been negative about their experience and like me will not look elsewhere. Perhaps you could try leaving Huey for a few 2 or 3 night visits when it isn't so busy that way it should be a bit less hectic for the staff and he can get used to the idea you will be coming back to get him. Good Luck getting Huey use to boarding.
  4. Glad to hear your dog settled down quickly. When reading your question my first thought was bloat I have saved my previous great dane twice when she had bloat the first time she had strings of drool hanging from her mouth which wasn't normal for her. By knowing what bloat was and signs and symptoms and by knowing my dog so well I was able to pick it up the second time just by looking at her lying on her rug. You need to act quickly if your dog bloats to help with their chance of survival. I am not trying to worry you and it may never happen but I would suggest you look it up and have an idea of what signs and symptoms you may notice. As for drool, you can't beat it I have to clean it up constantly and see it as part of the dedication of a great dane companion.
