  1. Ditto me with herding... except it isn't so much the money for me but the time :( Takes a long time for me to drive to Mandurah! The times I have gone I have had to pretty well devote the whole day to it which I can't do very often :(

Oh yes i'll stop bitching you have to travel further. Yep the whole day i need to find a sitter hmmm who can i rope in ROFL

Yep you can count a whole day out plus petrol for retrieving. Sometimes I wish I didn't enjoy it do much cos I can't afford the time or money these days with study!

Most pleasures cost money and time I'm afraid. You could spend heaps of money on regularly going out to dinner, nightclubs, clothes, shoes, booze, cigarettes, golf, movies etc etc. Everything is relative, and we choose dog sports. The days of having retrieving trials close to Perth are sadly gone, and yes it takes dedication to the sport to keep at it, but as RS knows, you get hooked and you and the dogs enjoy it so much. I sometimes think, what would I do without retrieving ? Maybe obedience, but I find that boring, agility ? hmm hours and hours of training and no equipment handy to practice with. Tracking, yep can do that, sortof. At least the retrieving has me and the dogs out in the fresh air. We have fun, they love it; I love seeing them work; and most of the people involved in the sport are good mates.

BTW Rubystar you did good yesterday !!!

Oh yes i understand everything costing money, its more the travel distance with kids that is the turn off might just have to wait to they are older and concentrate on something closer to home, i am hoping to start trialing chandra in obedience and mayeb agility for both girls os i can start with that :D

This is the same reason i will probably not get herding titles on my girls i so want to do it but each class is $30 per dog and its in mandurah so $60 per class for 2 dogs and another $40 odd in fuel expensive exercise :(

You can get a $5ea discount for joining the herding club ($10/yr) and another $5ea off once the dog has its first herding title :) We pay $40 per session for 2 dogs and up to 3 hours on stock.

I understand about the travel though! It's not so bad for us, but if we lived any further north I'd probably struggle too :(

Oh that's not too bad if you get that amount of time and discount is offered. I might come down dogless and watch for a bit and see if it is something i want to pursue :D

  2. Yeah it is disappointing numbers wise as I don't think I will ever get to run in a real trial as I'm just not prepared to enter a trial when iv never handled a gun before plus Mason hasn't had a gun shot right next to him. Then they make the training days so far out of Perth and it will cost me like half a tank of fuel if I'm lucky to get there and back , probably more in the new car. I'm being real careful with money as we desperately want to buy some land and start building.

Horty no hassles Gibbs is still on restricted exercise ( on lead only) until after the public holiday anyway :)

This is the same reason i will probably not get herding titles on my girls i so want to do it but each class is $30 per dog and its in mandurah so $60 per class for 2 dogs and another $40 odd in fuel expensive exercise :(

Horty love the new addition gorgeous

  3. Sorry to intrude on the WA thread being a non WA-er but OMG Ptolomy I am in :love::love::love: with the lighter girl. She is adorable!!! By god they are cute little chubbas.

I'm not sure I'd get anything done with them around!

    Resume normal programing :bolt:

    She's my mums favourite :D

I was late for work 4 out of 5 days this week because of the little cherubs - I just couldn't put them down......

Hahahahaha can't say i balme you though they are adorable

  4. Hiya,

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks heaps for all the advice, reassurances, etc before my first show!

I survived, it was actually quite fun, lovely to meet up with you in person finally SparkyTansy :D

I have my entrys all written out for the next few shows already!

Now I think I need another outfit, shouldnt wear the same thing twice, right  (husband needs convincing of this)

I am trying to convince my hubby of that lol though i do have about 6 different outfits that i rotate. Glad you had fun :)

  5. I was showing yesterday, got to meet the lappies finally and i so could of smuggle Annika home i am in Love. Jive is jsut so cute as well adn appears to be a bundle of energy.

I bombed out totally showing yesterday i even managed to run into the ring rope and try clothesline myself. my dog tried to high five the judge and neither girl wanted to stand still  then upon pack up and i was collapsing my crate i caught and squashed my finger in the bars had to open it back up to remove finger. But i had fun and thats the main thing :D

  6. MishB your other question was answered well by Emery, but just to answer your other question, you dont have to send a SSAE unless it's stated, in WA. Most of the shows you just pick up your numbers before the show starts.

OKay thanks, what time on Saturday are you getting there & how do I figure out where to set up my stuff? I was thinking I would get there about 8am so I have time to find where the ring is, put my crate up and get puppys early morning crazies out of the way, I would think I am first in the ring with a baby Brit?

Do you know if it is in the undercover area or outside? I guess I will soon find out when I get there lol.

8am is a good time to get there i try get there an hour before show to allow set up and relax and i have an R breed very rarely we are at the beginning lol.

when you pull in the gates there is a billboard it will have the ring numbers on it and the layout. so i might have up the top 1 2 3 which means opposite side near canteen closest to canteen ring 1 then ring 2 then ring 3 bottom of board is office side same rule applies first is closest to office and then each consecutive ring. (think i got the top and bottom bit right i haven't been to a show in ages lol)

Look for your ring if lost go to office and ask they normally all to willing to point out your ring. You need to set up 2m from the ring to allow a pathway and esure there is a 1m walkway between multiple gazebos.

Remember to collect numbers if they haven't been sent to you and have a great day

yes i have to take one of mine on sunday my 9month old the other two are being babysat at the grandparents otherwise i am on constant watch alert :D

  7. Can I join this thread? I have never completed an Endurance Test so this thread has been a great read.

I was planning on doing 2 of my dogs this year and 2 next year , one is too young and other is ah attending to other 'duties' for six months. Unfortunately one of the dogs who I was going to ET has just had surgery so I am down to one.

We have been doing about 5 or 6 ks a day, six days a week for the last month but I have just realised we were only going at about 9.5ks so have upped the speed to 11 and dropped a k or so. We will increase the distance again in the next couple of weeks and we need to start on other surfaces because our trail is gravel.

I am really worried about the willingness test, Fergus isn't the brightest spark. If we only had to stand and do a triangle and out and back we wouldn't have a problem. He has a fabulous recall but ask him to sit and he usually rolls onto his back and waves at you!! Could be interesting for the tester

I am thinking of entering the GSDC test and maybe also entering Sale as well in case we fail the first time because I really have no idea what I am doing!

Yes, you can join. And welcome!!!

Sounds like your training is going well. You have a sensible pattern happening, so am sure you will do well.

Please DO NOT worry about the willingness test. As I said in a previous post, the name was changed from "obedience Test" to "willingness test".

it is no longer an obedience test, just a test to see that the dog is "willing" to follow your direction.

I am one of the judges appointed to judge the GSDCV event in June and I can tell you that as a judge, I am not looking for trial standard obedience. You CAN double command, you CAN use your hands to physically assist the dog. I just want to see that the dog is prepared to work for you and is capable of following basic directions.

If you need any advice, please ask.

    M

This is good to know cos the girl i am hoping to trial has no idea what sit is without a little presure on the behind lol she will stand for hours but sit lol

We walked 5 k today and did 30 mins swimming as well hubby home tonight so more biking tomorrow. How do people measure distance and speed is there something i shoud purchase to know what we are doing??

  8. I've just found out Buster went missing at Bells Rapids yesterday. If anyone hears anything please let me know. I'm in QLD atm, my poor Dad spent hours looking for him and as you can imagine feels terrible about it. 0412 639 671

Shared his pic on facebook if zac was awake i'd go have a look i have let my friend who walks there daily know fingers crossed

    ptolomy those pups are gorgeous

  9. Good work emery, I have 2 kiddies for you to bike next if you're keen :D

After such a long absence from training due to study commitments, it was sooooooooooooo good to be back out last night and just enjoying the dogs and not worry about study. Had a ball with Pippa in puppy agility class, then got my 2 out for some retrieving with RallyValley. Now I just need to find time to do some obedience training :o Monday night training doesn't happen often for me anymore due to classes being on Tuesday and the prep I have to do :(

If my mum asks any of you if you've seen Pippa, don't tell her I dognapped hershhh.gif

She's too much fun :D I might sway to the dark side myself one day

Hehehehe once i pass my two girls i will be willing :D aiming for Chandra in June then Kelari in September (think that's the months of the ET)

I want to bring chandra down to agility training once we pass the ET she is 5 is it too late to do just some fun with her? she is uber fit a small rotti and very agile as is her daughter?

Got home last night to find a Petplan cheque. Gibbs leg paid for in full :) pretty happy

Yay that's good. makes me think hmmm maybe i should get insurance for the pets

  10. Sorry to read CC.

Well we are getting better at riding daily went riding with a friend yesterday and her dog who has a death wish for me lol kept runing infornt of my bike :o but we did a longer ride and chandra and i were fine. walking today as no one to watch kids whilst i ride so a nice leisurely walk and swim :D

  11. Day 2 of training another 6 or so k done today and no pain for me yay.

Question re handlers: Must it be the same handler the whole time or can you swap say one is tired can you have a back up to take over runing or biking the dog? and also if you start of biking must you bike the hwole way or can youswap and run some of it? Thanks

Hi, you can swap handlers as many times as you like, however the handler that performs the willingness test prior to the run, must be the same for the willingness test after the run.

    M

That's handy to know :) Thanks

  12. Day 2 of training another 6 or so k done today and no pain for me yay.

  13. My pup is a Brittany, so we are in the gun dog ring. Im entered in the Gun Dog Show on Saturday. I have met the only other Brittany exhibitor already & I have arranged to sit with her, but thank you so much for your offer, thats so nice :)

It sounds like the baby puppy class can be quite entertaining at times, I was at the agility today for a look, a lovely lady said as long as he didnt bite the judge in the ring we'd be all good. He was a perfect little angel down there this afternoon, he is so unpredictable at the moment! So different to my older dog when he was a pup, he went through the usual forget everything at 7/8 mths but didnt have all this moodiness that I remember.

I have gone done to Jenn (Wolfproud) for 2 handling classes so far, she is lovely.

She does them on Thurs nights at the cawa too, during school term is a bit difficult to get there tho, its a 40-45 min drive & kids need to be in bed a bit earlier. I get there when my hubby is home, he works away a fair bit, so its a juggling act.I will go along to as many as I can, I have learnt heaps already.

I am able to get to her class again this week and Im doing short fun trainng sessions with him like suggested, so we will get there eventually. My eldest son has seen that there are childrens handling classes and wants to do them he told me today too!So after I learn, I guess I will be going with him lol

Oh yes baby puppy class is so much fun :) Always good for a giggle. I understand the travelling to get there it takes me 30 mins or more depending on traffic and my hubby works away as well so with three kids it is hard :)

The other brittany exhbitor if its who i am thinking it is is lovely and she will be very helpful :)

Good luck on saturday and just remember to have fun :D

  14. Banjo got his Jumping Dog title today  1st place on the morning trial and 3rd in the afternoon :D Although the afternoon round was the better one as he actually looked like he was having fun and I had to run to keep up :D Yay!

    Yay well done :)

Congrats Mirawee on Banjo's JD title thumbsup1.gif

Emery I admire you being able to fit in a bike ride with all your kids thumbsup1.gif

I gotta fit in a walk any way which i suppose is easier as kids ride there bikes and zac goes in the pram, but i am trying to get bike riding in when hubby is home so i can do the june et well thats the plan :)

  15. H MishB. Your boy is just a baby and judges are pretty good with babies. If you can get to more handling classes it will be beneficial to you and your dog there are some great trainers out here in wa if you are in perth. Helena at canine grounds tuesday nights, Delia at canine grounds on Thursday nights and a gentleman called Tony that does it from his house.

you are fine to enter Championship shows just let judge and steward know its your first show and they are normally very willing to give advice and take their time etc. I took a baby in a few weeks ago and she kangaroo jumped the whole way around the ring tried to get in the judges lap then her brother refused to walk and i had to walk around ring backwards ROFL gave everyone a laugh but pups enjoyed themselves and that is the maint hing.

Open shows are great for oyu and your pup to learn more and gain experience but we have more champ shows then open.

Pup may be teething hence shy around his/her head. i would suggest small training sessions with lots of praise and reward and don't stres if pup doesn't stand still you want them to have fun and you can keep working and praising for standing still, start with 5 seconds and work up :)

What breed are you showing and what show are you in, Next weekend i am in the utility dog club shows open and champ sun 6th. You are more than welcome to come sit with us if its that show and i can help you out if you need it.

  16. Ouch my butt from riding today, think i need more practice lol

Best thing you can do....go to your bike shop and buy yourself a pair of padded lycra cycling shorts, or "knicks" as they are called.

    Trust me they work!

    M

Its been many years since i've been on a bike :) wasn't used to sitting in that position day 2 of riding this afternoon when hubby gets home will see how i fair today :D

  17. Great news MG :)

Emery, I have been bad and haven't biked Banjo in ages :o 6-8k is a long ride though!

Wasn't bad for a first ride :) I might have to go again today when hubby gets home from work had two days off to rest me LOL hope the rain holds off though not sure i want to ride in the rain might have to just walk them :D
