  1. I agree with this 100% I have 3 boys and do as many courses as I can find while bringing them up, parenting is hard word and I love assistance! I also do the same with a dog in the form of reading, this forum, asking lots of questions, obediance school. People that just get a pet and dump it in the backyard, don't desex, or ones that really irk me, buy a pup and go off to work 8 hours a day leaving the poor thing with nothing! So sad!
  2. and.......this is relevant how - just another putdown for the evil kids of todays society. Heaven forbid your child ever have a life threatening condition. I have a 7 year old with a severe peanut allergy (and kiwifruit, jeez, she's super abnormal). She eats peanut or kiwifruit - without medical intervention - she dies. Simple. Yeah, these evil kids who are a bit different than your normal kids. What a pain in the arse they are. I can't believe the hate in the tone of some of these responses - seriously, they make you worse that the "evil kid" because you're all adults who should know better! I'm soory for your daghters illness, my daughter who is now an adult, suffered from asthma & severe excema, she was allergic to a lot of foods, most were the ones kids love, like chocolate & cheese, but she never stared down an animal, she loved them all, OH she was allergic to animal hair as well, but it never stopped her going & giving an animal a cuddle. I think that maybe the autism rise could be caused by the fact, that hormones are used to generate faster growth in chickens, plus genetically engineered food, this has to have an affect on kids. Totally OT I have an analyphalactic child to nuts too I don't get the entire link with staring at dogs, there are many reasons why allergies and autism is more prevelant nothings been proven though and trust me they are real! Also chickens don't get given hormones, that just doesn't happen anymore, the particular chicken that is used for meat is bred to grow quickly and it's fed A LOT! I don't think hormones have been used for about 30 years. I guess I find it sad that there is such hated directed at kids because mine just love animals so much they would never set out to cause harm, it's sad to tarnish all with the same brush IMO.
  3. Generally it's around 2-4 drops, you cannot overdose on this stuff, and you gan either do straight on the tongues, on the nose so they lick off or in their water, for say a day when it's stormy. I love RR use it all the time on people and the pets, it works very well, and thank you for reminding me all 3 dogs have a trip to the Vets today so must givem them some before they go!
  4. Do they say sorry? It's a submissive pose I would have thought if your telling him off, but I think he's more saying stop telling me off than sorry. My border Collie does it all the time, but I only growl at him when he mouths me or gets too nasty with the other pup.
  5. I stopped at about page 6 reading replies. I knew of a lady when I was a teen who was a child in a concentration camp they regularly used German Sheppards to terrorise these people. I don't remember where this lady was from but I think she would be in her 70's now. Is it possible this could be the case for this lady? In dealing with anyone with a psych disorder sometimes it can be pointless to raise rationality with them, they arn't rational! Through no fault of their own. I don't know what the answer is for you, but I can guarantee you if she has a mental disorder, and she's suffering from PTSD or something simular with her fear of dogs, the law is not going to penalise her. She must have a reason and once that came out I think they would probably empathyse with her.
  6. Yes they are, but they go out as fast as they come in. I have a proper dog pen for one pup but we used the compost thing for the other, just for night time sleeping, I think it depends how big your pup is really for leaving them alone in them. They go out quick as all the people I know with chickens are buying them up too, perfect sin bin!
  7. Mine would take him back but I can't think of a reason I would need that to happen, she offers awesome support I was also very impressed at how she vetted each buyer and each pup to match up the appropriate pup with buyer. For example a buyer with small children she would steer away from a really boisterous pup. Ivé not had Ridgebacks before but she knew my history and background with dogs so I was put as a priority buyer and I am so glad I went with this breeder. I think it's all about ethics too, perhaps some breeders cannot take a pup back but surely they would do their best to help find the dog a new and loving home. I can never understand why some people sell older breeding dogs, because they don't do good at a show or whatever, I know it's a business too for some but what about the bond and love you should form with your dog?
  8. It depends what the incident was, if we had to flee during fire I'd take the kids and dogs, and the chooks would have to fend for themselves, the rabbits would be coming to so the dogs had better not eat them in the car!! I would attempt to save a dog drowning I am a strong swimmer, I would give mouth to nose if a pet stopped breathing I have done this before so has my sister unfortunetly only she was successful. I don't see it as putting the kids over the pets, It might be wrong but I see the kids as extra helping hands but perhaps I would see it differently in a smoke filled haze. I know I wouldn't search for a pet, I'd grab and run not risk minutes.
  9. Good for you for picking it up, I think it's gross when people can't clean up after their dogs, really gives dog owners a bad name.
  10. Me too I have 3 boys, they are gentle and loving towards all animals, they have been taught well. I think rather than hate something that makes you uncomfortable why not invite them to pat your dog? Then they will becone animal loving adults rather than fear dogs, most hate comes from fear. While I understand some kids are downright scary, we were all kids once, and it's not nice to be hated. My dogs are regularly taken to kinders and school to become socialised to children, I hope they remain ok with them as they grow. Mind you I am very watchful that the kids are gently and behave correctly around them.
  11. Are they actually 100% essential oil blend or fragrance? Some of the scents seem more like they might be fragrance, just wondering what else is in the product and is it readily available or do you purchase direct from the company? Sounds good!
  12. Thanks for all the replies and Pm's, were not ina place ATM to be able to afford a huge amt of outside help, however things do seem to have improved over the weekend.
  13. Thanks I knew a newby would help me! You guys have the best advise as it's all still fresh! Plus your happy to share. Will do, sort of like a stand for exam in obediance type of thing then? He's still going to be a puppy then though, do many pups go to pieces and just try and kiss the Judges face in happy anticipation of a cuddle? I hope so I fear that's what mine will do!
  14. Don't want to offend but Ivé never been remotely interested in showing, however my new Ridgeback puppy was one or the pick of the litter and my breeder is a good friend so she has asked if she can show him. I am all good with this, and she has shown me how to get him used to showing his teeth and standing, but just wondering if you have any tips for what else I would need to get him used to for his first show which I think will be in May so he will be about 20 weeks. Also I expect a bath and brush will be needed before hand? Or do show people do that right on the day?
  15. Maybe your right. I trained my dog, I was only 3 years older, we trialed and got titles, I also had a working dog, but maybe that 3 years makes all the difference I don't know. I was an extreamely troubled child and the dog training and close bond we had completely changed me I was hoping for the same thing for my son, that this would be another interest for him and perhaps bring him out of his shell a bit. Our plan was obediance/agility/endurance for both the dogs, we also walk a lot I take them out 3 times a day and they run in the paddock too and I am home a lot so they getting a lot of attention, I though our home would be a good one for them.
  16. The white stuff on his "thing" lol is normal, at least both my pups have it post wee.
  17. It will be his dog, he needs to learn how to train the dog and be the learder of this dog. I can't be with the dogs every minute of the day, there are 3 children sometimes other things need attending too, he was there at the time. I don't think trying to make me feel guilty is really going to solve this problem. I wanted to try and address the issue without resorting to rehoming the Collie, my son is quiet attached to it.
  18. He's 11. We got him from breeders in the Dandenongs ad I met the puppies parents, their temperament seemed good. My son is possibly to kind in his approach to the dog, I have told him when he seperates them from fighting he must growl firmer at the Collie. I gave him am example this morning when both dogs were chasing the chickens. Were also getting strict when on lead, I had let the odd chewing the lead go with the Collie. But now I'm getting firm.
  19. Hopefully karma will be returned to this man in jail. They take a dim view of animal abusers and have their own justice inside.
  20. The Golden basically ignores them, when he does join in he growls at the Ridgey, who does listen, looks bashful and slinks off. He almost doesn't seem to like the Ridgy at times, the Ridgy loves him he's always kissing his mouth. We start at Dog Club in a couple of weeks with the Collie and about 4 weeks with the Ridgy. They are both lead walking, although Collie wants to chew the lead I am onto that, and they both know sit already, they are quiet smart. My son was supposed to be training the Collie I am supplying the discipline, and to give them both a break from the fighting when inside they are seperate one in the laundry and the other in a pen in the lounge (Ridgy). When they do get too full on I tell them no and tell them to break it up, they NEVER try this behaviour with my much older Golden. When the Ridgeback growled at me I was on the floor with him and giving him a cuddle, he seemed to just not kie it growled got up and moved away. Maybe he hates cuddles? The child was no where near us, he wasn't home.
  21. I didn't want to bring this up to have people tell me I shouldn't have got 2 puppies at once, obviously I have so it's pointless information, but this place has such a wealth of dog knowledge I am hoping for some idea's.
  22. Just want to know if it's ok for a pup to sleep in a child room? I have a Border Collie pup, I would like to sleep in my 10 year old's room, there are many reason don't really want to get into them, but this dog will be becoming his dog and I want it watched and spent more time with, is it a good idea?
  23. Well It's been 20 years ok a little over that since Ivé done anything formal such as Obediance, I had a Sheltie and we made it to CDX not sure if it's even called that now, I don't keep calling the ic association the KCC and I am sure that's changed too! But I am keen to do endurance as I am pretty fit and love riding and will hopefully have fit dogs! I walk 3 times a day and always have 2-3 dogs with me, also agility and flyball sound good. I have an 11 year old son who will help with the training, these dogs certainly won't be backyard puppies left oto their own devices. They very much a part of the family. I also have 3 children so have helpers in walking although I do need to direct them a fair bit. So far the Ridgey is easy and the Border, well he's going to be a challenge, he play fights and it gets nasty really quickly which worries me a bit. t'salmost that he really dislikes the other pup. But we will join the obediance club in a few weeks, at the moment we go up and watch the clever dogs their to try and get my son to be interested in learning about it all.
