  1. I have weaned pups from as early as 2.5 weeks through necessity and as late as 6 weeks. If all is going well I usually allow the mums to dictate the weaning but I do introduce my pups to solid foods from 3 - 3.5 weeks. Some are ultra keen at this stage and others aren't. Just allow mum and pups dictate weaning but make sure that mum is allowed her freedom when she says its time to spend more time away from the pups.
  2. As far as I know its still 5pm but not sure if its on atm as Carolyn is recovering from surgery. If you are showing this weekend at HB just pop over and see David or Carolyn and check with them. If not then I am sure someone can ask them for you
  3. Hmmmmm, this sounds familiar. Are you in SW Sydney? No Newcastle - so it seems the idiots are all located in Newcastle area. I just can't understand their mentality. The way they run the club is a major disaster waiting to happen. Class numbers are not restricted and there can be 30 - 40 people and dogs in a class!!!!! The other clubs in the area were basically started up by members who were frustrated by this club and guess what they are all the same!!!! Not a single club in this area promotes positive training and none will allow the use of a clicker anywhere on the grounds. Newcastle is still in the dark ages when dog training is concerned.
  4. I stopped goign to formal classes quite a while ago because the so called instructors were nothing more than pet owners that had been "Trained" by the club. It was a joke and some of the things they were recommending people do with there dogs problems were causing more problems. Anyone that knew anything about dog training were effectively shut down by the high and might club stalwarts who thought they knew it all but really had no idea. ABout 12 months I took a trained dog into an obedience class as he had some minor fear issues. I explained that we needed to stay at the outskirts of the class due to my boys issues etc and I didn't want to go into a class with any offlead work to ensure others had 100% control of their dogs at all times. Down stay command to the end of the lead was given and half the damn class dropped the leads. Needless to say this class wasnot ready for this dogs broke and my dog was attacked!!!! A vet visit and several stitches later and I now have a fearful aggressive dog on my hands. I had a look at my old club and found it had gone down hill. Many people had complained numerous times about an aggressive dog who had bitten both people and dogs before was not muzzled and left unattended and tethered only in a high traffic area. Why do you ask? The instructors deemed it was the best thing to do so it could get used to other dogs around???? None of the complaints were ever actiioned by the club either because the dog in question was owned by a so called instructor. Far too many idiots in my area thinking they know how to train dogs for me to attempt another class situation. I am currently training a young girl who I hope to have in competive obedience within the year. WE are going great and at 7 months of age she is already retrieving dumbells and metal articles. She has all positions sorted and knows a number of tricks as well. I'll be starting scent work with her soon.
  5. Maitland Dog club - Trains at the show grounds in maitland where they hold the markets on a saturday morning I think. Tried it once and wasn't impressed but it would be fine for basic obedience
  6. Just got an email enquiry on some puppies. Doesn't read too badly but the email address has me thinking its a scam. Asking for pic's of pups to be emailed when my advert directs to my website. Email shows 1 name and then the actual address is in another name. Email signed in the name that appears in the actual address. What are your thoughts?
  7. I have just ordered a thunder shirt for one of my dogs. He isn't noise phobic just high strung and fearful when outside of home. Time will tell if it helps him or not. My question is if it does help him is it likely to make him too hot on warm days (he will never wear it unsupervised by me). My dogs also wear cool coats when its hot and was wondering if placing his cool coat over the thundershirt will still cool him down.
  8. Unlikely any action will be taken unless a formal complaint is made and the appropriate fee is paid.
  9. Good luck with her - any negative turn get her back to the vet.
  10. Take her into the vet as she may have aspirated some milk. A pup that is separating herself from the litter and showing no interest in feeding would concern me.
  11. What a terrible experience for your friend. I once had to use the services of an after hours emergency vet but I point blank refused to leave and wanted to be in there to revive pups. I didn't manage to get in to the surgery but they eventually gave in and brought pups to me & a friend, in a consult room to revive. By refusing to leave and insisting on taking part in the pups revival I am sure this aided in the c-section being done straight away even though they were scrambling with other emergency cases. Actions of the vet may well have influenced the poor outcome but unfortunately they must prioritise cases as they do in hospital emergency rooms. Unles your friend can prove negiligent care of the bitch and pups I don't think there is much that can be done.
  12. Get the Dremmel Pet Tool - it will set you back around $40 or so from ebay. It runs on batteries but it works better when you use the lithium batteries as it drains the power of 'normal' batteries too quickly
  13. I have tenties and I had a boy that went horribly east west when I started feeding a well known super premium small breed puppy dry food. His sister on the same diet was not affected. Everyone that saw him said that there would be no way that it would correct. Well I stopped feeding the puppy dry put the pups on the adult version + their normal barf and within 6 weeks his front legs returned to perfectly straight and today you would not know it was the same dog. I can't say that it was 100% high protein but he went east west when the protein levels were increased dramatically by introducing a supposed high quality small breed super premium dry food and returned to normal when removed from that diet. I no longer feed puppy dry food.
  14. As far as I know he is on the mid north coast in NSW. Don't think he is practising though.
  15. Hi Just wondering if their is anyone in the newcasstle/lake mac area's that clicker train their show dogs or are interested in starting with a new pup. I have a 3mo Tentie who I am training but would love to meet up with others who are also clicker training their pup/dog. I am thinking of maybe getting together at Hillsborough 2 - 3 times a week with the focus of the training being on gaiting so we can help each other out. I have never clicker trained a show dog before but I have lots of resource material. Leanne
  16. Is this a small medium or large breed and how old is the pup? I have found with small breeds most vets expect to find patella problems and are far to zealous in diagnosing them. I would be very wary of this diagnosis is a young pup of a small breed. Their ligaments are still developing and its not that hard to manipulate a patella within a socket. Wait until the pup is at least 6-9months old before deciding on any intervention expecially surgical. Loose ligaments often tighten up and what is diagnosed young as a problem may be non existent when the pup matures. IMHO you also can't expect a breeder to cover your costs for something that may be a result of an injury. Unless you cna prove the breeeder knowingly bred from parents affected by luxating patella's then you would have not claim against them.
  17. Any chance your dog its getting bitten by Mozzies? I have a girl that scratches like mad for weeks on end when the mozzies are about. No anti Histamines or change in diet helps. Even though spot on treatments say they keep mozzies away they don't so some aerogard or similar may be needed
  18. You have inadvertantly trained her that that is her toilet spot and it will be very hard to break. I would suggest crate training. A dog will rarely soil its bed unless it is extremely desperate, especially at that age.
  19. First off good on mum for feeding 13 up to 5 weeks of age!!!!! It takes a while for pups to get into fully eating solids but they will don't worry. If they aren't eating and aren't drinking from mum but happy and alert and active they are simply not that hungry. Puppies don't have to be roly poly fat puppies to be healthy infact its better for them if they aren't (IMHO)
  20. Brunker road would probably be your best bet. One of the guys specialises in ortho. Not sure but I think its Simon??? Avoid Stephen he has a lousy attitude but all up the practice is good although on the pricey side but they are very good.
  21. NO but I did find out that camping is unofficially allowed so that is the plan at this stage. Dogs QLD are beyond useless - not even the curtesy of replying to my email - Bad Form!!!!
  22. The solution is simple. Incorrect entries from people that should know better should be returned and if they miss the close of entries because of their mistake so be it. Try an enter a Sydney show with an incorrect entry! Also I often read in the Gazette that Show Secretaries are required to reject incorrect entries. But I do think Newbies should be given the benefit of doubt and helped out where possible.
  23. Only outside rings, rain, hail or shine. Great. Thanks for that. Is there room to set up near the rings or is it walk in? CAr park is away from the rings so be prepared to lug your gear in.
