  1. Thanks for they reply's :). I am currently feeding him advantage kibble for large breeds, with the advantage canned food in small amounts with the kibble. Thanks for the link, will get into reading it now :)
  2. Hi all, I posted a while ago about my Ridgeback who has a constant upset stomach. Anyway, long story short, the vet recommended we try him on a 'hypo-allergenic' dog food. After researching all the different foods out there I am now stuck between feeding a kibble such as Royal Canin Hypo-allergenic or going for the R.A.W barf patties? If I choose to feed the barf patties, is that a complete diet or do I need to add other things? Likewise with the kibble? Ahh this is so hard, I just want to feed him the best thing for him! Thank you :)
  3. Yeah I have booked him in for Saturday morning to go and see the vets. I'm thinking it must be some sort of parasite from the bird poop...so now I have to keep him away from it...harder than it sounds...lol. Yeah , we will try the blood tests etc and then if nothing comes up then we will have a look at his food. So complicated to try and figure out what makes him sick when he eats so many different things...most things that shouldn't be consumed anyway! Ahhh the stomach and mind of a ridgeback will never cease to amaze me :) Thanks for the help DOLers!
  4. Thank you for that info, I will send a pm now :)
  5. I will also give the probiotics a try :)
  6. Thanks for the replys :) When he was 9 weeks old he got very very sick with what the emergency vets thought was coccidiosis... He was treated and made a full recovery. Do you think this may have just been dormant in his body until now? I think it's time to go back to the vets and request a blood test
  7. Hi all, I thought I would ask the question here before I take my boy to the vets once again. He is a 2year old ridgeback who we love to death, he is a big softie who unfortunately has a constant case of upset stomach. On and off for the last year he has a bouts of loud gurgling stomach noises, eating grass and vomiting it back up and not wanting to play or eat anything. After a couple of days he feels better and all is good again for a couple of weeks until It happens again. He is feed advantage dry and a small amount of advantage canned food and has a shiny coat. The only thing is.....he eats chicken poop! I'm just wondering if this might be the thing upsetting his stomach or if you think it might be something else? Thanks in advance!
  8. Awesome, thank you, I will google that now :)
  9. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has been camping in the town of Gresford, NSW? (about 1.5 hrs from Newcastle). The web site says that it is dog friendly and we are interested in trying it out but wanted to hear some opinions first :) Thanks!
  10. I cant figure out how to post an actual picture, so I will have to put a link sorry! Holly :) (Happy for people to offer breed suggestions, she looks like a staffy cross in this pic but in real life she is more cattle dog/ whippet looking) http://s1134.beta.photobucket.com/user/Katherine150291/media/Holly_zps7174955f.jpg.html
  11. Thanks for the replies :) Very, very helpful. We didnt get any advise from the vets when we picked her up, I think they were in a rush! I will try to add a photo of her, its not a great photo but its the only one I have right now. Waiting on a nice day to take some good outside shots :)
  12. Oh ok, thanks for that. We have only ever had boy dogs, so this is a new experience for us :) She is a bit of a mystery, she came in as a cattle cross, but looks more like maybe dalmatian cross. We are so excited to have her here with us, we cant wait to fatten her up and get rid of those horrible ribs poking out
  13. Hi all, We just picked up our new 4 month old foster puppy from the vets after being desexed. This may seem like a stupid question but do they do 'inside' stitches now? Looking at her wound she doesnt have any stitches? DOes this mean after a couple of days she can go swimming and get them wet? Thank you!
  14. I just ordered 2 of the toys from the first page.....then I read the comment about the kong toys and thought I must have missed something? Well I did, there are 8 pages! And I just bought 6 more toys
  15. Hi, I can 100% relate to your situation! My Ridgeback puppy was very very bitey and it was sooo frustrating. It just so happened when he was about 4 months old we had to go over to New Zealand so he stayed with his breeders for the week. Well when we got back, his biting had completely stopped! :D He was there with 10 other dogs of different ages, so I assume he was put in his place by the other dogs. So maybe your pup could spend a couple of days with your breeder, if they have a few dogs? As this worked really well for us :) . Good luck, and dont worry, it will get better!

  17. I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Lots of people ask if we cut his hair like that? (talking about his ridge) Once we had a lady tell us that he is actually a Vizsla, but he has been bred to have a ridge.....umm ok
  18. That is one good thing about our backyard, he can not be seen from the road, but our side gate is easily accessible, so a lock on that for sure. BC Crazy, it is so scary isn't it? I am hating these horrible people who are taking innocent dogs. It really is a change as we usually try to let the street know we have a dog in the backyard so that thieves are deterred, but now we have to try to hide him.. Unfortunately, each week we have the people who run an excellent doggy daycare come and pick up the dogs from the backyard, so it might be hard to tell the neighbours not to let anyone in. But I will have a chat to them and make sure they let us know if anything out of the ordinary happens. He is staying inside with us for most of the time we have decided and only outside while we are home and supervising. It is just too big a risk to leave him out. I think we might have to set up a crate or an area for him somewhere in the house to make sure he behaves... Thanks so much for the help everyone :)
  19. Thanks for the replies, Yep he is inside whenever we are home and only outside when supervise, which is a shame as he loves to sunbake. We are going to put a lock on the gate and possibly have to look at getting a locked run for him? But until then he is inside with us, not worth the risk. The only reason he goes outside at night is because he actually behaves better if he doesnt sleep with us, but we can put up with a naughty ridgy over a stolen ridgy any day! Thanks for the help guys!
  20. Hi DOLer's, As you have probably heard there have been multiple dog thefts in the hunter region over the past month or so. Now dogs are being found injured or even dead and they are suspected to have been involved in illegal dog fighting. Beacuse of this, I am sooo scared to put our dog outside! He usually sleeps outside in his kennel of a night, however we cant bear to think of him being stolen so he hasn't been left outside. He is a Ridgeback so a prime target for these thefts and I can feel tears in my eyes thinking about him being stolen. So my question is....how can we protect him in our backyard? are there any deterents we could set up so people wouldnt want to come near our backyard? thanks, ALfie02
  21. Great prizes for a great cause, well worth a donation! :)
  22. Hi :) I'm in Newcastle and while there arnt any fenced in dog parks there are a few fenced in ovals. The best one with gates that close is the cricket oval in Islington. It is near the kids playground at the park there (you drive past it on maitland road). And then just a short walk over the little bridge is the Islington dog park, which is awesome, everyone is lovely and all the regualars have great dogs :)
  23. I have a Ridgeback and while he is a total sook he definitely would scare off any intruders just because of his size alone. He is a wonderful family dog and is naturally protective of his family, but not possessive at all. If you decide on a ridgie just make sure you go to a reputable breeder and take your puppy to a good puppy preschool and socialise as much as you can! The best thing we ever did with our ridgie was to sit out the front of our local shops and let kids, adults and people with a disability pat him. He is now very nicley socialised with all sorts of people (and we continue to socialise him as he grows) :) P.s. Our next dog will be a bullmastiff so you have chosen some good breeds! :D
  24. Hi Huski, Unfortunately it is not a new collar, he has been wearing it for about 6 months, so well and truly past returning it (plus it so nice and soft now I couldn't give it back and start again, lol). I definitely won't cut it now, thanks for that advice :)
  25. Thanks for the replies, yes it does have stitching around the edges (it is a K9 Pro one). Sorry I'm not sure how to add photos, im not too tech savvy but if you have a look on the K9 pro website you can see a pic. I will take it into the boot makers on Monday and see what they can do. Thanks for the help :D
