  1. I was just out walking Chopper, Angel and Trixie. They're well and truly broken in so when I see a kid reaching out to them I always stop and ask if they want to pet them. I don't care if the parent is in the process of trying to instill fear in the child, I think it's important to let people see that bull breeds aren't all sharks on legs [that's why Chopper's on a short lead on my other side where he can't reach them with his ginormous tongue!]

It got me thinking. What if I created a nationwide event and encouraged owners of all powerful breeds to put a tutu or a feather boa on their dog [or anything silly really, maybe a superhero costume, just as long as there are no spiked collars or chains], take it somewhere there'd be lots of families and encourage people to say hi to their dogs. Obviously it would need to only be dogs that are placid and would handle a situation like that well. But imagine if we all got out there and just got through to one person that it's not a breed issue, it's an owner issue. It could be a small step in making a difference.

I have been following this with interest. I really like your idea of a nationwide event  I would certainly take mine along to something like that. But as with Chopper, my two would be so happy to be around kids they'd be itching to plant a sloppy one all over the kid's faces

  2. Oscar is our new pure bred Staffy 22 weeks of age. Each afternoon he suddenly runs and runs up and down the room from one end to the other for a few minutes, with a toy, jumping on lounge chairs at each end, until he puffs himself out.

Is this something odd or is it just hyper energy? We walk him every day. :D

Had to laugh when I saw the title of this post :)

Photos are mandatory, especially when they are of Staffords ;) Please post some :D

  3. The dog is now being reported as a crossbreed.

What do you say to that?

I believe is the question PF asked you a few pages back.

Yes, I think Mastiff was thrown into the description now.

I have seen several reports in the media about councils seizing "Pitbulls" to destroy, only to have the owners pleading with the council not to destroy their Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Even after one family produced documentation that showed their dog was indeed SBT, the council deemed it to have "pit bull qualities".

I don't know about other councils, but BCC do their assessment on whether a dog is pit bull by a few measurements of the head and body. Gawd help anyone who has a large Staffordshire! Seems the old mentality of "if it walks like a duck..." is rearing it's ugly head again.

I firmly believe in education...educate (train) the dog, educate the owner, and educate children. I was very impressed with the number of children who approached the dogs at the Ekka in the Pedigree stand, either asking If they could pat the dog, or offering the back of their hand first. Obviously these dogs are very well socialized and kept under strict control, as the public are encouraged to pat the dogs. But there were still an awful lot who ran up to the dogs, or threw their arms around the dog's belly etc. Out on the street this could lead to disaster.

Banning the breed is a load of codswallop.

  5. My 4 mth old dobie pup has a pea-sized solid lump on his muzzle - above his top lip, where his whiskers are. It's under the skin. no visible redness.

I'm going to get the vet to check it out early next week - there's nothing else wrong with him - but any ideas on what it could be?

No idea, but hope he's doing better :)

  6. Hey Jadesamara- how is your puppy?

All back to normal, thanks. She was released the following day and back to her silly self. Vet has no explanation for the belly full of fluid (and gas).

The hives appeared at the same time, and have not returned. She doesn't suffer from allergies, and thankfully Benson's have all cleared up too, now that he's on better food.

I'm glad we have the little miss insured, that's for sure!

  7. I had been out for 4hrs and got home to find my 5mth old with a stomach the size of a beach-ball. She was fine earlier, and still bright and happy (excited) when I returned, but I rang the vet in a panic thinking "bloat".

Needless to say I rushed her down there, and the vet was surprised at her belly. It looked as if she was ready to give birth to a large litter! Her belly was hard, and her pulse was 180, so he admitted her for X-rays and investigations.

He called me a few hours later and said her stomach was full of gases, and he wants to keep her overnight with a drip to get the swelling down. Fingers crossed by morning she should be back to normal size. Benson knows something is going on and has been looking for her. It's her first night alone, so I hope she isn't fretting.

This is what greeted me when I came home...

  8. Thanks for everyone's comments and advice. We saw the vet this morning, and he said the lump is from the injections.

The female vet we saw a/hrs isn't the regular vet we see. There are 4 of them at the practice, and she was rostered on for a/hr duty. Regarding the blood drawing...I held Jessie for the first couple of attempts, but I was getting just as upset as poor Jessie was, so I left the room and had OH hold her for the other attempts. I asked her about trying the leg, and she said the veins would be too small (she's a pup) and she'd have more luck getting a vein in the neck.

Antibiotic injection...that puzzled me a little, but went with her advice on it. As she wasn't really sure what was causing Jessie's vomiting, I guess she just wanted to cover all bases.

We haven't seen her collapse in the last day or two, which is good news. She had a vomit on the way to the vet (about 10mins drive away) so I'm not sure if it was related to the other vomiting or if it was due to the car ride. Does it normally have to be a long car drive for dogs with car sickness?

    Anyway, thanks again all.

  9. No idea- but she really should be at that vet- or another one :( Poor little girl.

When did she have her vaccs?

Sometimes, an injection can cause lumps .. but best to check with teh vet .

Hope she's well again very soon :)

She is due for her final injection next week. She has not left this yard, other than to the Vet's (I'm aware of Parvo etc). The vet Sunday night said she looked perfectly fine, and we felt stupid having called her in a panic 30mins before. She's running around happily, but eating quite a bit of grass, which is coming up with froth. She's not lethargic, not off her food, and seems quite alert and bright.

  10. I have a 4 month old female who has suddenly developed a largish lump on the back of her neck (to one side - near her shoulder). I noticed it today. It may be from some injections she received Sunday evening, but we aren't sure. OH insists that was not the spot her injections went in (he held her, so watched it). If it is from the needles, how long should I expect it to be there?

Now, there is some background to this story. From lunchtime Sunday, Jessie had been vomiting. We were monitoring her, and after each vomit she seemed fine again. Late afternoon she fell onto her side and couldn't get up straight away (just after one of her vomits). We phoned our vet after-hours number, and took her straight in. By this time, however, she was walking fine and wagging her tail etc. We check her twice daily for ticks, so we didn't think it could be that. Her next guess was snake, but after 7 attempts to draw blood from her neck without luck, we decided to let it go. It seemed unlikely as she was so well.

The vet gave her antibiotic shot, and also anti-emetic shot. No vomiting yesterday, but today the same pattern. Vomiting several times, and 1 collapse. Felt the lump while I was patting her, and didn't notice it yesterday during tick check.

Off to vet tomorrow, I think, but want to know if injections can cause the lump in question.

  11. We probably can't do Sundays for a bit. Scarlett has recall class Sunday morning then playgroup Sunday lunch so she's cactus after that- normally so am I!

Happy to head West for the April meet. You know me, happy to head any direction!

@Dandy I just realised your Raz is an Urban dog too- i have seen his puppy pics on the urban page on facebook- TOO CUTE!

I'm still keen for an April meet too. Myself and Flick_Mac are west...not sure about anyone else. Ams may even make an appearance :( (depending on work).

  12. Hi everyone,

I would love to attend Brisbane meets with my greyhound, Lucy. However, due to a medical condition, I don't drive. If there are any meets held near to where I live (Mt Gravatt East) I could get a cab there (Brisbane cabs take dogs). For meets further away, though, I was wondering if anybody would be willing to collect us? Naturally, I would give you money for your petrol and time.

Perhaps people could PM me if they think they might consider giving me a lift to any Brisbane events? I would really like to be part of the DOL social community but I feel quite restricted by the fact that I can't drive.

On another note - those photos of the dogs playing the water are lovely. Looks like they had a great time.

    Andy.

We'll keep you in mind Andy. Is Lucy ok travelling in the backseat with a male dog?

If anyone is sitting at home bored today, I'm heading to Booker Place dog park at Bellbowrie around 5. It's huge, fully-fenced, agility equipment there, and plenty of parking. It's not much notice, so I don't expect anyone to come, but thought I'd offer anyway.

I've PM'd Flick_Mac and Scarlett Dog, but I don't think Scarlett is online today. I was offline last night so didn't see the msg about a playdate until this morning. Anyway, PM me if you want my mobile number, or any other details etc.

  13. jadesamara..yep :D He was such a cute pup ... shame they have to grow up..but it's just amazing how similar he & his brother are ...

Wow! I'd only ever seen him as a grey old pensioner  He was gorgeous as a pup, but he's just as stunning as a distinguished older gentleman now :D

  14. Anyone keen for an impromptu next Saturday? It seems to be a day people are free. Not bothered where. Suggestions if you're keen.

On a side note is the Whites Hill dog park closed? I'm at Tarragindi and drive past most days and wasn't sure if it was open.

    Ooh, we are free!
