I agree, I don't want to make her play with dogs that she is not interested in, she is quite happy playing chasey around the park with us, I find it difficult sometimes with the parents of other dogs where they see it as play time so will not call their dog away. I find our lil pom is quite happy to play with dogs that are usually more docile/older even if they are a rottweiler or doberman :). I just wasnt sure at what point I should step in.

Hi Guys, Just a quick question. I have a two year old pomeranian, who I love to take to the dog park, I have noticed that lately when a dog approaches she will turn away from them and if they come closer she then sits down, showing no interest in play. If they continue e.g putting paw on her back or standing over her, she will often let out a small growl, being that she weighs less than 2kg this often doesnt deter the other dog. So I was wondering at what point do I step in. I want her to play with other dogs but not force her when she is not interested. Thanks

Thanks for your responses guys, I have decided to leave the playpen where it is but leave it open and add a barrier in the lounge so she can have the safety/comfort of her playpen but more room to move. This should be about 5m long by 3m wide. Do you think this is enough room for her to stay in while i am at work. Cheers

Hi Guys, I have a two year old dog and up until now my partner and I have always done shift work, so she was never home for alone for more than 6 hours so she stayed in a large playpen, which had her bed,food,water, pee pad and toys although I think she slept most the time. Now I have a 9 -6 job and I think the playpen is too small for such a long period of time. Although she is obviously toilet trained she can not have free run of the house as she will just bark constantly ( this seems to stop when in the playpen) So what do you think, what size are is big enough for her whilst we are gone. She is a tiny dog only weighs 2kg :) Thanks in advance

Thanks for the ideas guys, I just had a look at igloo beds, might try one of those with a snuggly blanket. Has anyone used those heated beds?

I have a very small dog she weighs about 1.5kg and she lives and sleeps inside. She goes for a long walk everyday which she is extremely happy with (spinning in circles at the word walk) :D . we find at night even though she sleeps in a little bed in our room she seems very cold, she curls up in the tiniest ball and sometimes I notice her shaking. We prefer for her not too sleep in the bed (mostly so we dont accidentally roll over onto her in the middle of the night) but I feel terrible thinking she is freezing. . Any ideas to keep the lil one warm? she also wears a jumper a winter

Not a new puppy who is not used to being alone and feeling anxious I wouldn't think Yep I shifted my girl from having outdoor access (where she would run out there and sit there and bark for ages as soon as we left!) to being locked indoors and in an instant her anxiety seemed to disappear and now she doesn't care when she leaves, she spends the whole time curled up on her leather couch hehe Let me guess - Mum was the Pom?? Frankly for the price of one of these, I think you'd be better off spending the money on a consult with a trainer. Have you considered my suggestion about installing a dog door. Boredom may be a part of the issue but a trainer would be your best bet. I agree money on a trainer would be better... If the barking and crying is from anxiety and fear of you leaving the shock collar isn't going to properly cure it, it could make her anxiety worse even? I'm not totally sure but it doesn't seem right to me to treat it with the shock collar. Have you tried leaving a worn tshirt or jumper of yours on her bed that smells like you? yeah i leave her with a jumper of mine, i dont want to use a shock collar thats why i am looking at the ultrasonic ones, they are the ones that you put on a bench and it emits a warning sound at first bark then an ultrasonic noise if they continue to bark. but first i might try letting her have run of the lounge whilst we are gone, see if she does any better (fingers crossed)

Boredom may be a part of the issue but a trainer would be your best bet. yeah we are going to install a dog door but i am worried about the noise, if the neighbours can hear her from inside, it will be much louder outside, all our courtyards are very close together. does anyone know of any good trainers/behaviouralists in perth. we will still try the bark detterent, we will give anything a go. we tried dap spray and rescue remedy and neither worked

I spoke to the breeder where i bought link from and asked for any advice she told me that links mum is exactly the same and has had to use a shock collar to stop it. we are going to try one of those petsafe ultrasonic bark deterrents, the guy said that once she is distracted from barking she might have a chance to focus on other things like her toys whilst we are gone, they are supposed to emit a sound when the dog barks, the reviews are 50/50. I just hate leaving her like that, it stresses me out worrying about her till i get home. and she stays inside I am reluctant to leave her outside if she barks the neighbours will hear her much more than if she were inside.

thanks guys, i am trying to avoid using any of the collars. and she is just so well behaved when we are home, she literally will only bark maybe 4 times a day at just one or two barks. i think we might have to try a professional because we are running out of options, we leave the radio or t.v on when we are gone but she still barks. she is distracted by food, but that only takes so long before she is finished and realises we are gone

Dont worry in a few days she will be all better and able to get rid of all that energy, link got a lil stir crazy on day four but i just kept thinking only a few more days and before you know it they are fine. we took her on short leash walks in the sun, just laying n the sun seems to tire her hehe and did lots of training, theres not much else you can do, we also had to build little road blocks around the house to stop the zoomies
