  1. I would also take him out on the grass to toilet... After every feed.. after every play/sleep... I would be doing wee runs every 30mins or so..

Hi TeamSnag - I am doing this nearly every 20 minutes or so - but hes sneaky :D

perhaps the OP doesn't have a yard?

Persephone - you are dead on - we dont have a yard right now. We are actually living in our rental property, whilst our new home is being built. My aim with the paper, is to gradually reduce it, until he is actually eliminating on a puppy pee pad tray. Right now I have the tray under the newspaper and had been gradually reducing the size of the paper, to aim him towards the goal :D

I have ended up removing the blanket that he plays on, but now he is starting to go around the house! Again there is no warning, no sniffing, circling or any indication that he wants to go - he just does it!

I am perserving cause he is just a little guy ;) but the last two days have done my head in a little bit! The amount of times I have caught him, picked him up and carried him to his area - I think there has been more pee on me than any of the floorings :grouphug:

  2. Charlie IS a good name isnt it

I understand about the tiny bladders and needing to go frequently

I wonder if its worth taking away the rug/blanket he plays on? This is the designated area, that we have for the kids to sit down and play with him, as well as clicker train.

Obviously when accidents happen a new blanket is placed down, and have been washing in biozet, so I am hoping there is no smell remaining for him to scent out.

Like I said this behaviour only happens first thing in the mornings, and last thing at night - so its made me very curious..

I thankyou for your advice :(

  3. Hi Everyone,

I am a bit confused about the toileting issue.

We have had Charlie the Chihuahua 2 weeks today, and all has been going well in regards to toileting. His breeder had paper trained him, and that is what I have carried on here at home.

He is set up with a puppy playpen, with the areas divided into three - crate for sleeping, food area and toileting area. His playpen measures about 6 meters long by about 2.5m wide.

    My routine has been as follows;

I generally get up around 5.30am/5.45am, and I basically wake him up when I go into the kitchen. I talk to him, blather on about anything until he eliminates (he is praised and is given a treat) and then its playtime!. I have a rug/blanket set up in the lounge room, which as soon as I open the gate he runs to and he waits there for me so we can play. All has been going good in this regard, and I get in anywhere of 30 - 45 minutes of play time, before I start preparing the day for my kids.

What has been happening with no warning is that he has started to eliminate on the rug/blanket. He gives no warning sign (no sniffing or anything) and basically just squats and pees. This has happened the for the last two days, and has included number 2's as well! As soon as I catch him doing it, I have been putting him right back into his playpen on the toileting area, and basically waiting for him to eliminate again. He doesnt go!

He is then generally left in his playpen, until my kids are dressed and have had breakfast, and only then is he allowed out once more to play with the girls before they go to school. He doesnt have any accidents. They enjoy another 30 minutes or so with Charlie before they are off. Because they have played with him, I basically hang around his toileting area, until I see him go, when again he is praised and given a treat. He then follows me around the house with me taking him to his toileting area nearly every 20 - 30 minutes, watching, waiting, praising and treating. I have no problems during the rest of the day.

But, when it comes to evening time, after my girls have gone to bed, the same thing as the first thing in the morning. There is no signs he is wanting to go, and yep surprise he does.

Can anyone please offer any advice? Is there something different I should be doing?

    Thankyou in advance.

  4. She opened the box and we both went Nawww puppy sleeping...then realised it wasnt real :grimace::rofl::love:

    :D :D :)

    Too funny!

I just won the Pug one - which my daughter is going to love! She has loved them for ages, but I wasnt keen on purchasing a Pug because of their shedding issues. At least with this one, she wont have to groom it every day :)

  5. Hi,

I finally got my puppy! :grimace: But the little fella keeps crying. I think he misses his siblings. As soon as we are out of sight, he starts crying. Sometimes during play, he crawls up to me and starts crying. He is so persistent!

I have try my best to ignore it. I feel so guilty for it. how long does it take before he overcomes this period?

    Hi Giraffez

Have you tried a Snuggle Puppy?

I picked up my little one on Monday, and his settling in has been great with this little item :D

The heartbeat on them is so realistic!

If you do look at purchasing one, you can pick them up cheaper on ebay and or amazon at the moment because our exchange rate is very good :D

If you do decide to get one do not order from Snuggle Me - I did and received nothing in over 6 weeks, tried ringing - number disconnected. Emailed three times - no response. Only a couple of days ago after sending out another email I finally got my money refunded - but again no correspondence.

    Best of luck :)

  6. I found this info;

NOTICE TO IMPORTERS OF CATS AND DOGS AND FROM ISRAEL

Effective 15 October 2010, AQIS has suspended the direct importation of cats and dogs from Israel.

AQIS has received advice from Biosecurity Australia that there has been an occurrence of dog–mediated rabies in northern Israel and accordingly the quarantine risk associated with the direct importation of cats and dogs from Israel has changed.

The information relating to Israel contained on this website is currently being updated. Anyone wishing to import a cat or dog from Israel should contact AQIS Live Animal Imports in the first instance.

    Hope it helps

  7. Ive only just got my puppy on Monday, and was worried about this as well.

From reading the forum and all the advice offered, I came away with "start out how you mean to go on" because setting up a routine from day one is a MUST.

Charlie is a Chihuahua and have to admit, with him being so tiny and fluffy all I want to do when he starts up his little whine is pick him up and comfort him as you would a baby

What I did was set up a puppy playpen with his crate inside. Charlie was used to toileting on paper, so I have defined areas in the pen - sleeping, eating, toileting.

So far so good :o Last night he had a little bit of a grumble, but basically what I did was timed myself. First time he started crying after putting him to bed for the night, was wait 10 minutes - then off to see if anything was wrong. Of course there wasnt lol - next time I let him have a whine for 20 minutes - again I had to get up and see if he was ok. Third time and final time was 30 minutes later, was just about to step out and go see what was happening when all went quiet. Waited around the corner for probably another 10 minutes, sneeked out like a thief looking for jewellery and trying not to wake the occupants of the house and looked in his crate. There he was laying curled up next to his snuggle puppy like there wasnt a care in the world.

He slept all the way through with only one little whine at around 1.30am to 7am this morning.

It is HARD, but the benefits of keeping to a routine will most definitely pay off.

Have fun with your mini foxie :o and would love to see some pics!

  8. I too am waiting for a puppy. Although i'll be waiting a while longer the mating probably won't be till early next year!!

But I am so happy with the breeder it's worth the wait.

Oh and its going to be a border collie pup

    I :o border collies :o

It is so great when you meet a breeder, that you just "click" with isnt it. I too have been fortunate to have had alot of help from the first breeder I contacted, who has just been so helpful I dont know what I would have done without her!

  9. Very cute  Congratualtions

I went puppy shopping again today, have two food bowls, and some toys

Have to order a soft crate for travel and the first night as I wont be at home and the metal crate is too big for the car, still have to order his food and some worm and flea stuff

Thanks Pandii! I have to admit I am addicted to doggy shopping - I even have Charlies Christmas toys put away lol!

    Hey everyone!

I am waiting for my dogue de bordeaux puppy, Nala, who will be arriving by plane in two weeks!

    Waiting is driving me insane!

I have an exam at uni 3 days before she arrives, so part of me wants the week to go slowly so I have plenty of time to study, while I also want the week to hurry up so I can see her !!

It is also extremely distracting, I am finding it so hard to sit down and study, when there is just so much puppy stuff I want to read about or buy!

How are all your little ones going?

Hi Emileigh :o Cant wait to see pics of Nala - I love that name btw :) I know what you mean by distracting! You should have seen me last week before picking up Charlie - My OH wanted to know what the heck was going on as I was all in a bit of tizz :)

Finally i can join this thread :o

I am hopefully expecting a puppy early February, a std poodle pup!

I have already bought a cute bowl and some toys. I need to stop buying toys and buy useful things! (like clippers and brushes!)

Hi Jrm88 - LOVE std poodle! Will it be a show dog?

Im waiting for my pup, 5 weeks to go and hes all mine, met the breeders 2 weeks before birth and i go and visit the pups every week. Hes an Amstaff, and a chunky bubba at that, i think 503grams at birth, im going to go see him tonight, apparantly they are all up and walking now so i cant wait.

I'm so jealous that you get to visit yours! Ours is all the way in QLD! Holding out for the next pics though...

I'm in the NT too and waiting for a new dobe baby in Vic. Waiting until Sniper is 12 weeks because of the amount of dogs with parvo. Every email and photo from the breeder is like my daily fix lol!

    Pics please :)

11 odd hours till bolt arrives!

Dont think I shared the latest photo here. So here he is I think this was taken a week ago the day after his 10 week vac.

Bolt is adorable Simple!! How excited are you?

  10. Hi Everyone :)

Picked up Charlie yesterday afternoon from the airport. He was a bit lethargic, which was a concern, but with a hit of glucodin in his water, he was right within 2 - 3 minutes. (Toy breeds can suffer from low blood sugar sometimes).

Took Charlie home, and what a little wagger! He wiggles his bum so much he looks like he is doing a bit of boogying on his own :)

I did take my camera, but didnt check my batteries so unfortunately no shots from the airport. Managed to take a couple on my iphone - but they are not that good - sorry for the quality.

Making himself at home on my youngest daughters lap

I did have to take him down to the vets this morning, as his left eye looked a bit sore, and was weeping quite profusely. He is on some ointment for a few days to see how it clears up.

We are so happy to have him at home, its such a pleasure to wake up to his little happy face!

He was such a good boy as well - couldnt believe it - he slept from 9.00pm through to 4.30am - when my husband gets up to prepare for work. Couldnt ask for a better first night :)

  11. I did speak to the breeder :) and what she did for his flight was freeze some water and glucodin into iceblocks for his trip to Perth.

I picked up Charlie at 2.15pm yesterday, and to me he WAS quite lethargic. Out came the glucodin with water, and within 2 - 3 minutes he had perked right up. I kept a close eye on him yesterday, and I did end up giving him a tiny little bit of nutripet - (twice) on the recommendation of my breeder friend here in WA.

He is an adorable little boy, with his tail wagging a million miles an hour, so fast that his little bottom looks like he is getting down and boogying lol!

The only other concern I have with him, is that his left eye is a little weepy and too me it looks as though his eyelashes are on his actual eye itself. Off to the vet this morning, to get him checked out.

Wanted to thankyou all again for your advice - made a nervous mummy feel much more prepared.

Thankyou Jed, Dante and Paul

  12. I agree with Pandii :)

Dont be disheartened Naomi - I too have waited a long time for this little one to finally arrive.

With getting a Chihuahua, and them being so tiny, I thought it was best to wait till my girls were an appropriate age to understand how best to handle Charlie. They are 10 and 11 now lol! In regards to actually contacting breeders and putting my name down on a waiting list it has been nearly 12 months till Charlie came along.

You will get there, and your pup will be even more special because you DID have to wait.

    *hugs*
