  1. i have a 12 year old staffy who used to have cartrophen about two years ago. it never worked on her, and neither did sashas blend. have been giving her 1 fish oil capsule per 10 kgs, and have not looked back. and that was 12 months ago after having 12 terrible months with arthritis and pancreatitis. now she is like a puppy
  2. For those people in central and southern Queensland, and northern New South Wales, there is a tourism promotion being held for the Granite Belt for these school holidays. This is an excerpt from the press release: Family fun on offer with Holiday Game Plan There is no excuse for children whining ‘I’m bored’ this Christmas holidays. They just need to get hold of the School Holiday Game Plan to design an amazing and affordable Christmas vacation. The Warwick, Stanthorpe and Tenterfield Visitor Information Centres have united to provide a comprehensive calendar of events and attractions for families to enjoy these Christmas holidays. Game Plan organiser Fran Hockings said ‘The Holiday Game Plan’ promotion is designed to offer boredom solutions to suit any budget and any length of stay in the area. “Children wanting to get back to nature can experience horse trail rides or pick their own strawberries and pet enthusiasts can even see police dogs being trained at Law Dogs Australia,” Mrs Hocking said. “During school holiday periods it is common for parents and carers to think ‘what can I do today that is with in my budget and keep the children amused’, so we have taken the guess work out with the Game Plan.” The promotion encourages families to explore the region’s attractions but with the added incentive of great prizes. As part of the promotion, Southern Downs & Granite Belt Tourism has offered the prize of a hot air balloon ride for a family of four valued at over $1000.00. For entries to be valid, children must get their entries stamped from three participating businesses. For more information on the Holiday Game Plan, call the Warwick Visitor Information Centre on 4661 3122 or visit www.warwickevents.com. It appears that there are many more family friendly activities and experiences are now being promoted including Suttons juice factory, strawberry and fruit picking, Jamworks, maze, tenpin bowling, mini golf and Lawdogs show
  3. what an interesting thread , never really thought about not giving my dog yearly vaccinations. she is now 12 years old and has had 12 monthly needles for the last 10 years - but she has always gone to the kennels during a calendar year. now that we are moving, and likelihood of her going to kennels are remote, am now putting it on my job list to talk to vets about requirements. would be interested in learning more about this topic - am a little biased towards vaccination as I have worked in the childcare industry for the last 15 years. Is there a 'loose' difference between childhood illnesses and dog illnesses or are they similar - by saying this I mean obviously there must be some need to vaccinate and are we possibly encouraging outbreaks by not vaccinating????
  4. Does anyone know where you can get a poster of snakes in queensland????
  5. just rang bayer, they said not before 2 weeks should it be reapplied, told me to ring vet. vet said to take another vial of advantix with me to kennels, and if they feel there is a problem or outbreak they can give her small dose.
  6. if she wasnt going up to the kennels I wouldnt be worried about it.
  7. I put advantix on my dog yesterday morning at around 7 am. last night at 8.30 pm, had to give her a bath because she obviously had rolled herself in something (cat pee???), she is going to the kennels on thursday in an area that is known for paralysis ticks etc. Should I reapply perhaps on Thursday morning just to cover her, or perhaps a half dose???
  8. I love mine and it works fantastic on my dog, best money I have spent
  9. Just a quick update - show is going absolutely gangbusters, lots of rave reviews and has been quite busy with lots of people attending the shows. Looks like may be participating in tourist promotion through Warwick tourist information centre for the Christmas school holidays and may also be promoted on television show
  10. of course they are, they are my nieces and nephews :D
  11. “It was action aplenty at Lawdogs Australia last weekend, after the doors were finally opened to the public, to view protection and detection puppies and adult dogs going through their training. Although the current puppies such as Jayah and Tyson are normally the crowd favourites as they begin the basics, there was a new arrival which stirred some interest. Three year old Ziva has moved in and brings with her a belly full of puppies, which will be old enough to feature in the demonstrations as they start training during the Christmas school holidays. Ziva arrived from Sydney and comes from excellent bloodlines including Czechoslovakia and German military and police. These puppies sure will be a handful. For now though, Ziva is being treated like a queen with plenty of obedience and nutritional treats as she grows bigger and bigger at the kennel. Owner Matthew Hibberd said, it was great to finally be open and to see the looks on peoples faces as they learnt the story behind each dog and looked a the specialist training they undergo. Seeing such big and bold dogs enjoying their work and treating it like a game is a pleasure to watch and entertaining as things don’t always go as planned. Our largest dog Kai at nearly 50 kgs treated a tunnel as a table this week and then wondered why the top wasn’t quite big enough to sit on like usual. There are now seven dogs at the facility from young puppies learning the basics, through to a retired patrol dog. Most are involved in each show as we practise controlling suspects, bite work and use agility equipment all while the public are seated behind a safety fence. Shows are at 335 Church Road, The Summit and run for about one hour. More information can be found at www.lawdogsaustralia.com.au”
  12. we dont have many caravan parks here anymore. will write the names of them and then you coulc enquire with them individually. Walkabout palms caravan park - its at the entrance to Townsville - dont know if they take dogs or not. Rowes Bay caravan park - its close to the beach, I am pretty sure within walking distance to off leash dog walk on the beach. Its also close to the city centre and strand. Bluewater park caravan park, rollingstone caravan park and I think there is one near woodlands, these are all 15 - 30 mins north of Townsville (they are still the outer suburbs) I am pretty sure that these all take dogs cause i looked into these when I wanted a long weekaway. Best bet is to look at the northern suburbs - saunders beach, mt low, bushland beach but it is at least a 20 minute drive back to townsville proper of which many many people do. hope this helps a little edited to add: if you are doing touristy things and looking for somewhere for the dogs to stay for the day, there are about 5 boarding kennels at the northern end where all the beaches are - I can recommend beaches boarding kennels
  13. there was an article i was reading a couple of weeks ago (daily mail??) will see if i can find it again, they stated the statistics of bats carrying the hendra virus 10 years ago was something like 15 %, they have recently done another research project, and the number of bats now carrying the hendra virus is up to 30 %. I believe something should have been done about this virus when vic rail first died of it 10 years ago, and something should definitely have been done about it 4 years ago when there was another major outbreak and i think three people died (2 of them vets??) I think for public safety the dog has to be pts, would be interested to know more about how the bats are getting it, as we have a huge problem up here in charters towers where there are 1000 and 1000's of bats who have lived in a local park for the last 10 years and it is illegal to move them on - as a result the town is closing down just due to the sheer numbers of them and no sign of hendra there.
  14. I should also add we have 10 cows and I will be owning a horse, so I think I will definitely have to investigate it some more. Are dogs the same as humans, the young and old (er) are more succeptible (sp??)to picking up viruses etc.
  15. Have just been away visiting our new property, was advised by family member to get c7 vaccination before i bring my dog down. I have a feeling that both his pups ended up with corona virus (could be wrong). My dog will be 12 years old, which upon a very quick look looks like might be okay not to have it, but the area is rampant with rabbits, foxes, and rats/mice. My dog isnt due to go back to vet before I leave but if I need to get vaccination done, I will.
  16. we have had two red bellied blacks in the last month. one you could see the pattern in the frost/dew on the ground when going out to hang washing out, very distinctive s pattern on the ground. researched into red bellied blacks, we now like them, cause they are not deadly venomous, they are dangerous venomous, only one death recorded from 60 years ago or something like that, and it was a toddler. red bellied blacks also chase and keep eastern browns off your property (apparantly) and there is no way you would want the eastern browns hanging around. The info is from the nsw wires group
  17. To cut a long story short, I have been giving my dog Topitran 3 monthly worming medication. Over the weekend, I went to five pet shops and vets and could not buy any. After discussing with and looking at the ingredient list, I bought Paratek. Gave it to her yesterday and this morning she has been vomited. (hence the reason why i dont give drontal anymore) Unfortunately (and a really bad decision on my part) I gave her some different food last night as well, so I am not 100% sure, but given her past history of reacting to worming medication, I am now going to have to suss out, where to either buy Topitran from or another brand. (it appears that some medications have a meat based ingredient in them which I need to avoid) What other brands of the 3 monthly medication are there apart from drontal?
  18. am looking for dog friendly accomodation, we will be travelling from Townsville to Stanthorpe, so we are looking at an overnight stay somewhere near miriam vale, gin gin or childers. Dog is house trained, toilet trained and doesnt bark. If she is allowed inside in the laundry or bathroom that would be great otherwise I am making arrangements to be in a tent with her or in the car (oh what fun). We will arrive approx 7 pm and will be leaving at 7 am so its just to sleep, if anyone has any suggestions.
  19. Some great ideas there, thanks for that, will do some thinking over the next few weeks about which way to do it.
  20. My dog is going on a driving holiday at Christmas time (first time ever as cant get her into kennels, and where we are going she can come too as its private property) She is 12 years old, has not been on any tin food or dry food for the last 4 years or so. Has pancreatitis and arthritis which flares up with any red and some white meat product (beef, lamb, pork, kangaroo), seems to tolerate only chicken, fish and turkey. At the moment she is getting salmon and veges and a little bit of pasta or chicken and veges and pasta (homemade) so I am looking for something to feed her whilst we are driving (2 day solid trip) and for the first day until I can organise her fresh food. The only other idea I can come up with is a tin of baby food - I noticed last night a tin of chicken with veges and pasta which I thought would be at least gentle on the stomach especially for the long road trip. (she also had a couple of tins of this during our cyclone for a bit of variety) I did also think the small tin of salmon and a tin of peas, carrot and corn, but I think it would be extremely messy if there is an accident on her behalf. I was also thinking maybe a muesli bar or something just to add bulk and for some amusement. whichever way I go, I would like to try it for a month or so beforehand so that she gets used to it, and I can keep an eye on any symptoms. Can anyone recommend a dry food, or should I stick with the baby food idea especially as its only for 2 days.
  21. My staffy is terrible in storms. she hyperventilates, and gets herself into such a state immediately to the point of collapsing. I have put it down to the fact that the previous owner had a lovely three year old who used to torment the dog and used to fire a cap gun at the dog. I also live near an area that does little athletics every saturday using a cap gun, so I have never been able to train her to calm down. Can speak wonders of the thundershirt, and she had it on during our category 5 cyclone yasi earlier in the year with barely a peep, so can recommend it if you dont have any other options.
  22. yes that makes sense, will see how i go for the next few weeks, unfortunately will be going to the kennels for a period of time, so will have to work on it again after i get back.
  23. for a 12 year old, she has absolutely no problems with energy. will probably make each meal 150 grams going by that % and will see how she goes on it, whether she loses weight slowly or stays steady. Thanks for that, I thought it was around that figure
  24. Somewhere along the line I have heard of a figure like 2 % of body weight in terms of how much to feed a dog. Is this correct, so for example a 20 kg dog you should feed them 200 g per day. Am asking this as i normally make a chicken and vegetable stir fry mix and portion it out for the two small meals a day. however am having difficulty with storage and freezing the meals, so am now looking at making a chicken mince (or fish) and grated vegetable patties (with eggs and other things), but want to know how much I should feed her. (by the way, she is a 22 kg staffy kelpie cross, who could lose another 2 kg or so, has pancreatitis, and arthritis, of which both seem to be quite well managed by avoiding red meat products)
  25. Thanks for those links. (Panto - the link for the gift items doesnt appear to work???)
