  1. awww its not good is it, I hated seeing ella sick, you feel so helpless.. they cant tell you whats wrong!! Our old labby Jake had KC which seemed to go on for ever. He sounded like he was choking sometimes. It was awful & as you said you feel so helpless. Our vet told us at the time, there are lot's of strains & can be difficult to treat. But he was 14 I think when he contracted it so would of been harder because of his age to fight it I'm guessing. What a gorgeous photo of your Ella in your signature. Love that name !! Ohh no poor thing...Im going to worry like crazy when Ella gets older(just like I do with my kids) lol I love the name Jake.. It would definitely suit a lab.. Id love to see a pic

  3. So your dog never left the yard in the week leading up to her surgery? You are not listening to me, in my 1st post I said this: "I thought id ask if anyone knows what it could be? She has been immunized up to date so hopefully that rules out most things she might of picked up at the vet.. she hasent been out since her op so i am really stumped and concerned"... Then I said after a previous post stating that I was annoyed that the vet didnt take it at all into consideration: "I thought he would even acknowledge that it could be a possibility just as much the possibility that ella may of picked it up just before she had been desexed".. Then you said he might of took it the wrong way so I replied: "Thats true maybe he did take it the wrong way.. but I thought most people still would have had an open mind and took into account other possibilities other than being close minded".. Then to close all arguements and miscommunication I replied "I never said it was definitely from the clinic nor did I persist with the vet about this and want to ruien their reputation.. I was simply telling the vet so If any other dog had also picked it up they can act appropriately"..
  4. I am not insisting on this at all, just pondering... and none of our neighbours have dogs so its not like she could have caught it by interacting through a fence.. I never said it was definitely from the clinic nor did I persist with the vet about this and want to ruien their reputation.. I was simply telling the vet so If any other dog had also picked it up they can act appropriately..
  5. Perhaps he viewed you suggesting that his practice's sterility procedures were lacking as an insult. Thats true maybe he did take it the wrong way.. but I thought most people still would have had an open mind and took into account other possibilities other than being close minded.. Again thanx everyone for your input :D
  6. Yeh I agree he would never agree to it but out of respect and honesty I thought he would even acknowledge that it could be a possibility just as much the possibility that ella may of picked it up just before she had been desexed.. Whichever way it may of been ellas immune system would of been down so she probally would of picked it up easily either way.. But now Im thinking of it it was kind of an insult what he said "ohh no none of our dogs have or had kennel cough" I mean if it is as simple as close contact with another dog and the KC injection does not guarantee if the dog will get it or not than it could be highly likely.. Sorry for the rant needed to get it off my chest, feel better now hahaha probally thinking about this way too much
  7. Hi Everyone, I took ella to the vet and he told me it could be two things kennel cough or while throwing up she might of swallowed it back down again causing it to irritate or maybe get inflamed/infected etc(which I dont think it is).. He put her on antibiotic's that will clear her lungs.. Over the last two days she has improved with still a slight cough but seems to be back to herself, wanting to play..Drinking water,eating.. Just giving her pleanty of rest and cuddles and I think it must of been kennel cough... In reguards to that I told the vet that she might of picked it up from there when she went in for surgery, he was quick to respond ohh no none of the dogs here had/have kennel cough.. but she was fine before she went in and she hasent been anywhere else since the surgery or have not had any contact with other dogs.. I told him just incase other people ring up concerned about their dog.. just doing the right thing and he had a go at me.. was abit anoyyed.. ohh neally forgot thankyou again for everyone whe replied.. I really appreciate all your advice
  8. Thankyou so much everyone.. I thought because she has been immunized she couldnt catch Kennel cough? Do dogs need antibotics to clear this up or can u use natural remidies in some cases to clear it up? how long does it usually last? My Poor baby.. first an operation and now this :-(
  9. thankyou.....ohh crap i did think of that.. so she can catch that even if she has been immunized? what r the symptoms? and what do they do to treat it? It can be deadly right?? ohh okay now im stressing..
  10. Hi everyone, I have a 10month old lab who was desexed 5 days ago.. there has been no complications but last night while I was at work my hubby said she threw up a few times.. today she hasent been throwing up just has a nasty cough(to the point where it sounds like she is going to throw up but she dosent.. it just sounds like there is something in her throat) I was wondering if it would have anything to do with the surgery? She has been sleeping most the time.. today she has been back on her food but she has been given small quantities'..I have been giving her water through a siringe as i am worried if she gets Dehydrated.. what are the signs?? Because of the long weekend and today being the queens bday nothing has been open but I have a follow up tommorrow morning with the vet but I thought id ask if anyone knows what it could be? She has been immunized up to date so hopefully that rules out most things she might of picked up at the vet.. she hasent been out since her op so i am really stumped and concerned... any advice i would really appreciate
  11. Hi everyone I am asking a question for a friend who has just brought a male labrador. I have always had females so the area is abit grey for me.. She has a 2 year old female labrador and now has a 9week old male lab, he keeps trying to hump her.. is that a dominent behaviour or a sexual one? Didnt think a 9 week old lab would understand this. Also with desexing does the same apply for males in reguards to waiting untill they are abit older because of growth hormones etc..? I myself who is about to desex my 10month old lab have held off due to advice given on here from DOL users.. so my friend is wondering if to do the same for a male? She dosent want to breed just wants whats best for the dog as well as elimanate any humping behaviour? Also i forgot should she ignore when he trys to hump her other dog or tell him off?? Thanx in advance chelle
  12. Yes she did not have PRA results for the parents before breeding them - and it was not their first litter - this was a concern that is why we had the proviso in writing of giving the puppy back if both parents were carriers or worse. We now have certificates that both parents are clear. Apparently we were the only people out of the other 8 getting a puppy that wanted this, which worried us back thne for the new owners and about the breeder but felt if it was being done we would know. So we were waiting on tenterhooks on that one which she delayed getting to us and then we get this yucky surprise hip certificate that we have been misled on. I agree with both replies before - we should give her back because we would not have taken her in the first place but also if mum was 0/0 we could still have a puppy with problems - but we have always been aware it is not purely genetic a better score just improves the odds for the puppy how the puppy is nurtured has a massive effect. Your opinions really help my hubby and I are trying to the right thing by our family and this puppy - the sad thing is I know if she has a problem we will be the best family to look after her but at what cost emotionally and financially. Thanks for listening and posting so far guys ...she is so lovely..... - the vet we are seeing on sat is an orthopaedist who offered pen hip xrays at her desexing in 3 weeks - but obviously we will not proceed with any desexing if she is going back. Okay sorry to say this but how are you doing the right thing by the puppy?? by taking her back after she has bonded with you!! Then what the puppy will go back to the breeder and probally get given to a poor owner who dosent give a crap.. the best thing you could do is give her the best life you could.. you wouldnt give your child back if she didnt come out perfect so why should you give a poor innocent puppy back.. id be happy to take her!! EDIT: okay sorry i didnt read the whole post was just upset that so many people said to give her back.. SHAME ON YOU.. I read debates on here with dog owners who in one breath go on an on about how terrible some dog owners are irresponsible and what about the RSPA who are killing dogs everday because owners 'give their puppy back' then in another breath they are saying ohh no you cant have a dog who hip and elbow scores are high blah blah blah.. Yes humanity sucks and their are evil people out their who breed for the money but you are talking about an innocent puppy who is not at fault but just needs a loving home..
  13. Hi my 6 month old lab has yellow discharge in her right eye.. i was wondering if it could be due to a blocked tear duct or a infection? I have just noticed it this morning and I wouldnt say it is wheeping, but when i wipe it away i notice next time i look there is another one that replaces it
  14. I have never heard of such a 'training' method. It's not one I'd recommend. A young pup, socially isolated, barks for attention so you gag it. A barking collar would be less aversive - at least that only works when the pup barks. Seriously, crate train these pup.s Get up, let them into the house, give a bone or a kong and go back to bed. If it carries on, ignore it. At least the neighbours won't have to listen to it. Or better still, sleep the dog inside in its crate. Gundogs and working dogs were bred to focus on people - isolate a people focussed pup outside and the consequences are hardly surprising. I fail to see why a pup should pay for simply wanting to be with its family. I dont like the sound of a muzzle either but in saying that I am not the one to say its cruel or indecent In no way is my dog isolated.. She is with me 24/7 through out the day and just sleep in a secure place ouside/undercover in a warm place. There is no reason a dog needs to be with you 24/7 otherwise it will make a dog anxious when you do need to go out. I agree a pup should be with its family most the time.. I dont mind her whining in the morning its the kids i dont want her to wake up especially on a school day.. like i said 6.30-7 is fine but not when its still dark outside.. i tried giving her food when bringing her inside but find she still whines.. Someone mentioned putting her on a mat with treats.. i might try that.. thanx
  15. thanx aussielover.. they are cheeky arent they and very clever!! How was your trip? I bet you missed mindy liked crazy and gave her big hugs ;) and lots of walks ;) when you got back
  16. Going on my situation which is simular to the original post i have tried to bring in her inside and cheeky ella knows how to open our hall door and she comes up to our bedroom (and thats after we give her breakfast) ;) If we do put something up against the door so she dosent come up she just whines..I know its just that she wants our attention which is fine but not at 5.30am
  17. I am so happy you posted this My 6 month old labrador does the exact same thing!! Its just in the morning and I know its too get attention but its a problem cause sometimes its 5.30 in the morning which is way too early.. other times its around 6.30-7am which dosent botther me cause i gotta get the kids up ready for the day/school.. I cant leave her barking as i dont want to upset the neighbours but if i get up and give her food she going to accociate food with barking then she might do it more!! ahh.. She also does it more if she hears us but she now does it sometimes even before any of us are up.My lab also lives outside in an undercover veranda which is closed in from rain/wind etc.. and she gets pleanty of walks so im stumped on what to do
  18. thankyou, that was very helpful.. I do agree our pup was too young and under circumstance it couldnt of been helped( i wish it did) the older the better but we will make sure she is nutured and socialized and hope she will do just fine..
  19. thanx christine, I have read about it on here before.. there is just so much information, it really is an overload.. my heart tells me to wait but when i hear cancer, it just freaks me out.. I know all dogs can get cancer of some sort.. i just dont want to put her at any risk.. she is just too precious
  20. opps didnt realize i did that thanx rusty
  21. Hi I dont want a debate just curious, I know there has already been a thread on the pro's and cons and I already know them but I went into the vet today and I just wanted it to come from her opinion, instead of he said she said.. She said one of the pro's of desexing a dog before she comes into season is a 0% chance of breast cancer in females ( I have a 5 month old female lab 'ella' who is not desexed yet) and apparently there is a higher chance like 35% more after she came into season if you desex her after.. I told her I am not one of those bad dog owners who wouldnt be careful when ella was coming into season and I told her I heard that the bone intensity is not as good if you desex too early and even though I dont want to breed I want the option if I want to get her into agility sports. She told me that research has shown their is no difference in that reguards if you desex her now or early.. every vet advocate it, I mean I could be totally wrong but I cant help but think its just not right to do that when the pup isnt mature but in saying that I am NOT an expert, so I could be totally wrong!! so has anyone else heard this? would it change your mind if u thought there was a chance your dog could get breast cancer?
  22. I dont work all day i do afternoon shifts but my hubby is home by then but it is a great idea if I have to duck out to do shopping especially as she is taking to it really well to the crate(i love it, shes playing in their quietly now) .. That is great that your pup dosent tear the house apart.. I think all dog owners wish that for their own dog..lol Thankyou everyone for taking your time to reply.. I really appreciate it

  25. No and I'd not personally recommend it. There's a point at which a crate does become a prison and confining the dog to a crate for 10 hours a day crosses that line IMO. This is a relatively more common practice in the USA I gather but they deal with greater extremes of weather and far more serious animal threats to dogs than we do. I still don't like it though. I'd confine a dog to a room or pen before I'd use a crate. ohh okay.. thanx I was confused why they said they did this as it didnt make sense..yeh it seems abit silly crating all day
