  1. This is Bud in his bed. He has this one since we got him. He usually starts the night of in his bed but by the time morning comes around he is in the bed with us (under the doona). We have a waterbed and he has his own step at the end of it so he can come up when he wants during the night. This is also where he sleeps when we go out or are at work. Makes himself comfy on the pillows.

    :)

  2. Judy my pup had a bit of a fascination for snails too. I removed countless snails from his mouth the in the first few months we had him.

One thing we do to keep the snail numbers down is put on a 'happy hour' for them. We put down beer traps (just some beer in a shallow container/dish) at night and pick them up in the morning. Our dog is inside overnight so he can't access them.

The snails (and some slugs) are attracted to the beer and end up falling in and drowning. They die happy, and there are a lot less of them for Bruno to munch on. :)

Thanks trinabean might have to give this ago

  3. One of the wee Chi's we had as kids (Still going strong at 16!!) is a licking freak!!!

She will lick you till your skin is soggy

I have no real advice sorry, we could only ever stop her for a little while, then she'd start again

Same with Bud. He is only 18 months old. Got a lot of years of licking to go yet

  4. I missed the follow up story on Today Tonight last night.

It sure is a scary thing. I'm not sure if it's in WA or not either but I would rather be on the safe side and try and get Bud to leave the snails alone. The first thing he did this morning when he went outside was find a snail on the grass and start playing with and picking it up. He soon got told off. I don't think he really knew what was going on as he just looked at me with his head tilted to the side as if to say "why cant I play with it".

  5. Ok so I saw the story on Sunday Night on 7 last night about the 2 babies and teenager that got sick with rat lungworm from coming into contact / eating snails or slugs. If this can be passed onto humans then I'm presuming that dogs and cats can get it also. So my question is how do I stop my dog from playing with or eating snails. We have heaps of them in our backyard at the moment. I don't want to put snail bait dowm so what else can I do. I would hate for him to get sick.

    Any suggestions!!!

  6. Our Chi is an inside dog so stays in when we go out. He has the whole house to himself. He usually knows when we are going out so he goes and puts himself to bed on the pillows on our bed(he has his own step to get on and off the bed). I have tried leaving treats etc for him but he wont eat them when we're not home. So I don't bother leaving them out now. I just make sure he has plenty of fresh water. He has a bowl in the bedroom so he doesnt have to walk out to the kitchen to get a drink. He has newspaper on floor near the back door if he needs to go to the toilet but never uses it. When we get home he is normally still on the bed so we can only presume that is where he has stayed all day. What a life!!! :)

  8. It seems my Chihuahua puppy, Heidi also has patella luxation - every now an then she 'skips' and she is only 3 months old.

I am really worried about her, my staffy has only just recovered from her ACL surgery (her leg will never be the same) and now I have to worry about Heidi as well. :(

I have been reading about patella luxation literally all day and it seems there are mixed opinions - some people are saying surgery is needed above grade 1, and some people say conservative management is the way to go as long as the dog is not in pain. I am very confused - hoping she will improve as she gets more muscle, but realising there is little chance of that.

I have had her on a raw diet singe I got her when she was 8 weeks old, she also has a fish oil capsule every day and some glucosamine - I am really hoping this will help.

Good luck Judy, it looks like I will be with you on your journey unfortunately. I hope your boy goes ok, lucky it is only grade 1 at this stage.

ETA: does anyone know if I should take Heidi swimming to increase muscle mass or is she too young?

    Edit - spelling

Thanks arielle. I know what you mean about the mixed opinons. It gets a bit cinfusing when you start reading all the different thinks on the net.

I hope your little one is going to be ok as well. I hope the glucosamine helps and prevent him from getting arthristis. Can only try. Will keeping a close eye on things thats for sure.

All the best with Heidi. :)

  9. That's good news Judy :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hope he improves for you quickly. he sounds like a such an adorable little fellow

Thanks. He sure is an adorable little boy. He keeps me company and is a lot of fun to have around. I would be lost without him.

This pic was taken a few months after I got him. He's a real little poser.
