  3. Oh I'm sure he would. But my bed belongs to my BOSS - our cat and he will not tolerate any dogs in his bed. Dogs in bed? What a ridiculous idea! Ever since we've got a puppy he (cat) looks at puppy with utmost contempt, then looks at me as if saying: "Dog? Hey human, surely we all know perfectly well that me, THE CAT, is the best thing ever happen in your life. Why, oh why on Earth have you got that worthless spotty clown of dog then?" Yeah, our Charlie getting better during the night in his crate. Last night he slept through the night with just a single toilet break.
  4. Crate is in living area all the time. I have temporarily relocated to the coach near the crate but still...
  5. Ok. As I've started this thread... So we did get a crate. And a puppy He is 9 week old dal and has been living with us for 5 days already. He liked crate from the first minutes in our home. Crate is open and our Charlie goes into the crate by himself whenever he wants to have a nap. Sometimes he lays down somewhere else, but has no issues if we pick him up and put into the crate (or lure him inside with a treat). He usually does not mind if we close the crate door if he is inside. BUT!!! We tried to crate him during the night and it was a nightmare. He was screaming and moaning and wrestling all night long. 10pm till 6am NON STOP. I never imagined that a 9 week puppy can be that intense. By the end of the night I would not be surprised if wire crate would be completely destroyed. We could probably continue with the "be firm" mantra for the following nights, but we live in a duplex and really do not want to bother our neighbours. So the next 2 nights I've taken different strategy. Crate is open and puppy is in crate. If he leaves crate I would gently put him back inside. First night it was a non-stop process, but on a second night I had to put him back in crate just couple of times. Still if I shut the door during the night puppy goes ballistic. Not sure how to overcome this. As I said he loves his crate most of the time, but occasionally hates it with a passion. "Wait till he stops crying, then treat" just does not work because he never stops. And when after many-many-many hours he does stop, there is nothing to treat. He is so exhausted that you can give him the bestest yummiest treat and he ignores it. I've heard of that crate training DVD and going to order it, but in a meantime any ideas?
  6. Oh! And another question. What crate size would be suitable for dalmatian? Someone suggested 42"... Really? Saw 42" crate in a pet shop and it looks HUGE.
  7. OK. Thank you very much for answers, much clearer now.
  8. I had dog throughout my early childhood and school days, but at that time nobody used crates at all. I heard about crates first time in my life about 6 months ago when we started thinking about getting a dog. Initially an idea of putting a dog into a cage seemed absolutely horrible, but now after much reading we inclined to get one for our puppy which we getting in 2 weeks time. But still I do not quite understand how/when to use it. Bunch of threads here about how to crate train, but not much about WHY crate train. - Do puppy supposed to sleep/rest in the crate only or he should have his own bed(s) AND crate(s)? - Is crate always in the room or you fold it when it is not needed? - Do you have multiple crates - one in each room? Or one crate? If one, is it always on the same place or you move it to different rooms as needed? - If family sleeps upstairs and spends all day downstairs where the crate should be? - Should we close puppy in a crate during the night from the day 1 or we should gradually train him to sleep in a crate over several days (weeks)? - Is it OK to crate puppy for short period of time if we are at home? - Housebreaking. Do we have to put puppy in a crate just to house train him (even if we do not NEED him in a crate for any other reason)? - Is it OK to have crate partly covered with thin breathable cover? Just for aesthetic reasons. - Do you use crate during the whole life of your dog or only for puppies? - Is water bowl should always be present in a crate even if we know that puppy just drank some water and he is not going to be closed for a long time? Sorry if it seems too stupid. Haven't had dogs for over 20 years and that crate concept is totally new for me.
  9. Thank you very much for replies. Another series of (stupid) questions... - Is it common practice to buy puppies interstate? Is it easy to arrange? What is a ballpark price for shipping, say, boxer pup from QLD or VIC to NSW? Assuming that we decided that we would like to buy puppies from particular breeder what are the steps? - Get confirmation that litter is expected. - Put our name on waiting list - Visit breeder and pat/hug their doggies and confirm that future pups' parents are nice and well looked after. Can be difficult if breeder is far away. - Wait for puppies to be born. - Pay deposit - Wait for 8 weeks - Hurray!!! Anything else?
  10. Basicaly, subject. Never had a pure-breed dogs before, but we decided that we will buy a purebreed puppy soon. We really want to be sure that we are buying well breed healthy pup without genetic/temperamental issues. Obviously from reputable breeder. Now how will I tell if breeder is "reputable" or not? So far we contacted breed club(s) and obtained list of breeders from them. Had phone conversations with several breeders. Keep our eyes on dogzonline puppy register. Still not sure... What exactly makes breeder a "good" one? If we to decide between two breeders to buy puppy from what questions should we ask? So breeder must be - Registered with state's breed club? - Registered with ANKC (Dogs NSW, etc)? - Provide puppy with limited register papers? - Both parents and puppies should be medically tested. Some breeders publish pedigrees of their puppies. They look very cool with all those fancy names, but looking at pedigrees of two different litters how it is possible to tell which one is "better"? Please do not feel that I'm implying that some breeders are not exactly "reputable". During phone conversation with several of them they impress me as persons who really care about their dogs and breed overall. I just want to be sure that I've done my homework researching about our future family member. P.S. Still deciding between Vizsla and Boxer...

    Schnauzer

Would standard schnauzer be able to co-exist with a cat if brought to home as a 8 week pup?
  12. I believe dog owner should obey laws and do not let dog off leash unless it is allowed. What I do not understand is that rule that ON LEASH dogs are not allowed in national parks. I do not have dog yet (very seriously considering getting one), but my favourite pass time is bushwalking and it is killing me that I would never be able to walk my favourite tracks with my future dog. I would understand prohibiting dogs in some very special remote places, where dog barking might disturb native fauna, but many parts of national parks are very close to suburbs and surely people and particularly children are much noisier than dogs (well, my kids certainly are
  13. Mmm. German shepherd? Leonberger? Doberman? French Bulldogs are lovely. But I do like to run with dogs. And bushwalks...
  14. Well, kids want DOG. Any. Daughter was excited about golden retriver, but it's just because she often sees one living nearby. My wife likes dogs though never had any... She is mainly concerned about kids safety and cat-dog relationship. I guess mid size would be perfect. Though kids understand how to deal with pets, I'm bit afraid for smaller sized dog. I'm sure our son will love playing ball and tug of war with dog; daughter just need someone to hug We do not mind hairs. Wow! Thank you for mentioning that. We have big family sedan... but yeah, wagon would be better... Certainly not "never switched off". Everything else is OK.
