  1. Is there anything i can add to my dogs diet to assist with anal glands getting full? would be good if he could naturally pass them through his poo
  2. Looks like cherry eye to me. My Maltese sometimes gets it and I just simply lightly massage the corner of his eye and it goes back in. Cotton bud with warm water I use to rid the tears from the corner of his eye
  3. Thanks 'Chris the Rebel Wolf'. My pup has been fine since i gave it to him, and yes definately on a FULLLLL stomach
  4. Just gave my pup Comfortis. he ate a FULL meal and gave him tablet and more food. finger's crossed i dont see any reaction and no vomiting. going to keep a close eye on him
  5. Any tips for environmental control? I would love to not give him any flea treatment what so ever, its just bad chemicals I am putting on his skin Then if your comfortable then go for it!! ETA- my dog also had a reaction to Advantage but I am lucky that I have kept her flea free with environmental control.
  6. I have spoken to my vet about it and she recommends it, but at the end of the day we aren't 100% certain this was caused by Advantix but i am pretty sure it was, as i applied it on his neck on monday and by thursday he was itching and trip to the vet. He used to be on frontline but got 2 fleas whilst being on it, hence why i changed to Advantix.
  7. Thanks Tilly, The ingredient which I believe triggered off my pup reaction to Advantix was Permethrin (44.0%). I have checked Comfortis and it doesnt have any ingrediants at all which Advantix had in it.
  8. Can someone please provide any feedback on the flea treatment for Dogs- Comfortis? I am looking towards giving my 3yo maltese shuh tzu this flea treatment instead of flea treatment on the neck (was thinking of Revolution). I am just afraid to give him flea treatment on the neck again, as last month I gave him Advantix and he had a reaction to it and trip to the vet, later I googled it and read horror stories about this flea treatment so now staying away from 'Bayer' products. Is Comfortis highly effective? has your dog had any side effects?
  9. has anybody tried apple cider vinegar diluted and sprayed on the coat as a flea preventative? does it actually work? what dose?
  10. Not that I am aware of- i just googled it to see a pic and never seen that plant around. I have also being reading forums on this site and read Calendula Tea is good for soothing itchy skin etc. Does anyone know how I make the tea and how much I use to make it? Assuming i can buy it from health food store?
  11. Wondering if someone can please help me. Had to take my 3yo Maltese Shih Tzu to the vet yday as all week I have noticed he was shaking his head (soo much) and biting at his feet and itching his neck. Originally I thought it could have been ear infection, vet said its allergies and his whole body is pinkish (unlike normal) and his ears are very pink too. He had to have a needle to ease the itchiness and is on tablets. So... I have no idea what is making him have allergies. I havne't changed anything other than his flea treatment to 'Advantix' - which I gave him on Monday), but I am unsure. Any suggestions as to what I can do to work it out? I have rinsed all his blankets and bedding and boiling water (no detergent) just in case it was the detergent I'm using. Don't know what else to do... Your suggestions/advise would be greatly appreciated. Regards Mummy of Itchy Oscar
  12. I have been searching on the net and it says to give my dog 1 tablespoon of Unsweetened canned pumpkin to assist with it.. Has anyone else tried this? His bottom isn't smelly today like it was yday! He must have went to the loo and did 'good' number 2's lol
  13. he eats Kebbel- Eagle Pack- Natural Dog food
  14. I changed his diet months ago to help with his glands.. I give him raw meat or chicken or my own homemade doggie patties mixed with dry food. I also give him chicken necks and make him rice, carrot and pumpkin mashed... He is one spoilt dog but i dont think its helped!.. what foods do you recommend?
  15. Hi everyone. I have a 3 year old, male maltese shih tzu. He has got his glands expressed twice now. I can't remember when the last time was, maybe 2 mths ago. When i was brushing him tonight I noticed a bad smell coming out of his rear.. does this mean he is due for another 'squeeze'?
  16. Very helpful! Thanks. When I hear my dog doing it I'm thinking he is going to choke!!!!
  17. The vet has showed me how to express it myself- but I'm chicken Sh*t and scared I am going to do something wrong and hurt the little fella. Kebbel- Eagle Pack- Natural Dog food MIXED WITH Dog food- All Natural- 4legs (http://www.4legs.com.au/products/all_natural.php) Or Purina SUPERCOAT Classic Loaf with Chicken, Vegetables & Pasta I don't really give him chicken necks- as I'm scared he is going to choke! I think I need to get over that and give him some I think.
  18. When I went to the vet he suggested 'massaging' the corner of his eye to put it back in.. He even showed me how to put it back in myself but i'm not game enough! These days he hardly gets it which is great If your 14 week old pup keeps on getting it and it doesn't go away then probably needs to be fixed by your vet. Good luck and I hope it goes away on its own and little pup doesn't need surgery.
  19. Hi There. I have a male Maltese Shih-Tzu. He is 3 years old now. When he was a puppy he used to get cherry eye every week or two! I took him to the vet (each time) and the first time they put the corner of the eye into place themselves- like flipped it in- if that makes sense. When a dog has cherry eye the corner bit of his eye is shown.. He got cherry eye many times so I booked him in to have it removed (2 options- removed or they like sew it down).. Long story short I changed my mind so he didn't get it operated on. Today he is fine- I noticed now when it gets it is after he plays alot with his toys. If he gets cherry eye it lasts a few hours or is gone over night. Usually the eye weeps a bit more aswell so I make sure I wipe away the tears. Good luck with your dog- I have heard the operation is more crucial for dogs who have cherry eye which is prolonged and lasts for days and days.. If it just last's for 1 day or a few hours I don't suggest you get it done. I heard once you operate the dog will get dry eyes etc. Let me know of any other questions.
  20. Hi everyone, I am new to the forum. Wondering if someone can please help me. My 3 year old Male Maltese Shih-Tzu is having trouble with his anal glands. Yday was the 2nd time I went to the vet for a 'squeeze' of the glands and this time an injection too which my poor dog didn't like at all. The injection was to reduce the itchiness in his bottom and from it feeling uncomfortable. I took him back to the vet as he had been scooting his bottom on the concrete outside and also sniffing his bottom and his bottom usually looks pink but lately was brown and scabby looking. The reason for my forum topic was to find out if anyone else is having troubles with this and there dog? Does anyone recommend me anything to his diet to make his stool 'harder' which will then from what I have read assist with his anal glands and hopefully not clog up again.. I read on the net to feed my dog pumpkin (boiled and mushed), carrot, add oats to his meal and possibly but not too sure about this one- add Metamucil(which adults use). What do you all think? Thanks heaps in advance and any suggestions / feedback will be greatly appreciated. With thanks Maltese Shih-Tzu Mummy :D
