  1. i'm very new to showing and never seen it but i've heard people talk about it and didn't know if it was real or sour grapes, then again i'm in a wheelchair and show my own dog who seems to do well and i've heard people say i only get the sympathy vote

    That's shocking :mad

it doesn't overly bother me i think it tells me a lot about the person saying it, i also have a stafford so already have thick skin

  3. I sent a border collie puppy to NZ last week. The cost with the flight, cage, blood tests, treament, import and export certificates etc cost $2500 plus the cost of the puppy.

after reading this i think i'll try and find what i'm looking for here

  4. i took my 9 month old staffordshire bull terrier pup to our first proper obedience class well he decided that when we weren't doing anything or when we were he was going to bark and nothing seemed to stop him the trainer suggested when he does i say ssshh in a quiet voice well when i do this he just barks more with a very happy face, what would anyone recommend we try?

Getting him to focus on your face and rewarding him for being quiet when he does it.

Teaching him a "look at me" cue or similar would be a good start.

Does he spend much time around other dogs?

he knows watch me and he stops for a minute then starts again, hes also a show dog and doesn't act this way at a show, i have another dog he plays with and he has regular play dates with 2 other different dogs, theres alot going on at the training grounds at the same time 1 agility class and at least 3 obedience classes ranging from beginner to advanced maybe all the action worked him up i'll have to watch him on saturday

  5. i'm pleased things have settled for you, the 1 piece of advice i can offer you is if your going to own a stafford get thicker skin i get worse comments and dirty looks on the street than any of the postings here because i own a stafford

  7. Look up the AQIS website which will give you an idea of any quarantine issues. As far as I know though there is no quarantine between Aust and NZ when a puppy comes here, so wouldn't imagine there'd be any going the other way. So transport costs and purchase price. Transport price is worked out by weight, so larger dogs are obviously more expensive. Airline approved crate has to be factored in as well. There would no doubt be some vet work involved, health checks, vaccination certificates etc.

thanks that site is very helpful

  8. Use this time to get your yard sorted out then. It will also help you more with breeders if they know you have the ways and means of keeping them seperate when you are out, and, if you're thinking of getting a bitch, when she's on heat.

With Staffords when a fight is on, it's on! It's bad enough happening when you're there, don't take the chance of it happening when you're not.

if i'm not home my dogs are crated and when i'm home supervised in the yard, i've only ever owned 1 female and we clashed big time, for some reason i've always perfered males

fair enough but what if you're away 8 hours plus? You can't crate them for that amount of time. What if they don't get on even when you're home? As Sandra has said, not all get along and you have to be prepared to accept the fact that the dogs may just hate the sight of each other, in which case it's rotational play and permanent separation. Thin crate wire and glass sometimes just won't cut it. If you are serious about getting more than one Stafford then I would seriously suggest you look at runs as an insurance policy.

i'm not rushing into anything, i'm gonna talk to Blitz's breeder ask what he recommends, getting another dog isn't something i take lightly. i have had 3 male dogs live here before my old entire stafford, a fixed amstaff and a fixed pit bull (the amstaff and pit bull were my flatmates) without any issues but i do also understand that every dog is different

  10. I used to worry about 2 adult stud dogs being together, but after a trip to Germany, where it is common and they think we are strange to be separating our stud males, I realised that it was only a matter of training, leadership and sensible management.

    Ouch - dangerous advice.

In your breed it may well be so, Blitz has a Stafford, training & leadership means zero to these guys sometimes - when they go they go, and sometimes don't stop when asked to do so no matter how well trained or lead!

Personally I would never recommend someone with one Stafford buy another one of the same sex unless there was a considerable difference in age (your boy's only young isn't he Blitz?) and they are prepared to accept that it could well be that the pair will not get on and permanent and complete separation may be the only solution - and a crate/wire netting or a glass door won't do the job in all cases.

Stories abound in the terrier world of dogs which got on for many years then one day decided to kill each other over a leaf or a crumb of ten week old bread.

yeah my stafford is only coming up 9 months, i'd like another maybe middle of next year, i'm not rushing into anything and would hate to put any dog at risk.
