  1. Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldogs, and Yorkies, Whatever you want to call them, are all the same thing. I'm confused with this list. I had no idea bull dogs were terriers, and if they are, shouldn't all the other terrier breeds be included too. This seems to ben another 'blame everyone for the actions of a few' tactic.
  2. Who cares what the dogs were, I want the guy declawed, muzzled and stuck in a dangerous dog cage, and continually told this is the fate he's given the dogs. Killing's too good for this prick!
  3. Looking at the poll results...Who said it's got nothing to do with them? This won't stop at pit bulls, the government will keep banning breeds until there's none left, and then they'll ban cats because they scratch and horses because they kick and birds because they have claws, it will never end! Then you'll be stood around wandering where your right to keep pets and even choosing what pet you want to keep has gone. This is a very slippery slope, it should stop NOW!
  4. If the dogs were 'long term family pets' the parents would've known if they were unstable. At this point, I don't think it's a good idea to place blame, the parents blaming themselves is punishment enough. There always have been and there always will be accidents, don't try to blame the dog alone, sometimes it is a surprise. It's NOT all their fault, unless the kid's parents are all powerful and all knowing. Surprises will always happen, it's part of being human. It doesn't help that the government's legislation only blames one type of dog. It's not the dog's fault, having the dog killed or permanently muzzled won't fix anything. It's all the adults responsibility to keep the child from harm, EDUCATE them so it doesn't happen again.
  5. You've all missed the point of what do the government/councils plan to do about the dogs that BSL has made their owners hide/lie about their parentage? It'll only end up making the dogs more valuable to the meat heads who bought them to appear tough, and as there's nothing to regulate anything that's already illegal, I fully expect the breed to become as dangerous as the govt./councils say they already are, then what do we do? We'll have a race of unsocialised and very unstable, very aggressive dogs, and WHO will have created the mess? PS. Let's all ban thunderstorms, more people die because of lightening strikes then are killed by dogs!
  6. But shouldn't they have just declared the collie dangerous and not euthanized him? I have to walk Fiona in another area so I don't have to muzzle her. Is declaring a dog 'dangerous' meaning the dog must be muzzled and on lead everywhere?
  7. mmm, my collie was seized and euthanized for ONE NIP. I didn't refuse to pay the fine(I have paid it) I wasn't told I was required to keep him in a certain way to have him returned and he was a 23 month old puppy that I'd had for under 2 months when this 'incident' occurred. This isn't scaremongering, it's the truth! PS - My staffy x is also required to wear a muzzle when off the property. She didn't bite, but she's 'menacing' according to Monash Council.
  8. Thanks melzawelza. I'll start making my banner now!
  9. So who judges the dogs? I want to check my assistance dog will be ok so I won't be seen as someone who's snuck their dog in.
  10. It will only take one incident to undo the message the rallies are trying to get out there. Many people underestimate the ability of their dogs to handle a large, worked up crowd full of unknown dogs. A dog scuffle would not have damaged a message about abolishing puppy farms but will be all the media latches on to if it happens at a rally about dangerous dog laws. Good point Snook! Won't make the owners of the dogs in the scuffle happy either. My dogs are Ok. Horse is an assistance dog, he does love to sniff though! Fiona came to the Oscars Law rally. She does get a bit intimidated by all the loud noises, so we stayed across the road for the most part, then went to treasury gardens for a doggy snooze!
  11. Why no dogs? How can we encourage making dogs part of the community if we show up without dogs? Peeing dogs shouldn't be a problem, the steps are concrete so it evaporates quickly. Pooing dogs won't be a problem as there are laws everywhere about picking up your dog's poo. Even the Oscars Law rally said the dogs must be pretty bombproof or you'd be asked to leave.
  12. I have spoken to Debra Tranter. She was fully in favor of every home having the two or 3 dogs that the law allows. I did say there are some people I wouldn't trust to have one dog, and I asked about permits for people who can cope with more dogs. She told me that in the few months that the councils thinking about the application, people are actually breaking the law, and she feels ok to tell the police and the RSPCA about it and get the person arrested. She thinks the pet limits stop hoarders, but hoarders don't care what the law says, pet limits only hurt those with the presence of mind to follow them.
  13. The RSPCA have more Police Powers, the problem is the laws are very loose in this area. Dogs must have food, water and shelter. The dogs can be fed the crappiest food in existence, but, it IS food, and therefore they have that requirement met. A single drop of even mud covers the water requirement, and a corrugated tin sheet covers the shelter part. There is nothing that says the amount or quality of food or water, or even the shelter specifications. My problem with all this is Oscar's Law is trying to set up new laws, and the enforcers of these laws are already bitching they don't have the money to enforce the laws that already exist. Since when has that made any sense?
  14. It's not an Australian chip! It churned out lots of gobbledegook on the reader. I don't want to post the numbers, the landline's been disconnected and the mobile number's dead, but as we haven't been told the number's out of service, we'll keep trying. The RSPCA in Burwood East let us put up a Found notice' on the board, and there are a few other vets/pounds there are notices in. Edited to add: I meant how long is quarantine to get in the country?
  15. How long is quarantine? Dave loves her, she'll be well loved with him, Maybe they brought her over and got the local council breathing down their necks.
  16. The dog's in Melbourne. He said she slept in bed with him. He smelled her fur before dropping her at doggy daycare. She must have been washed with human shampoo over her back, but she has dags on her tummy, so he's told them to clip her properly and give her a dog bath. Apparently Dave's taught her to sit already, she's definately a smart dog. I'd say that because she's on the skinny side and because she has dags(more then would come from a few hours in the box)it's likely the owner didn't think it was worth the expense of keeping her clean. I don't know why the note says she's been bred from, she'll be spayed by us soon anyway. The vet said she's 2 years old! I think Dave's planning on keeping her.
  17. JulesP, DON'T go to the RSPCA then...The girl asked why I feed Horse raw, and when I said he's corn and wheat sensitive, I was told to feed them Science Diet because 'he looks so thin'! Fiona is obese now, so I'm sure that didn't help, the way Horse looks or the crappy food! First ingredient's CORN, so I have 2 large sacks of crappy kibble next to my tv! I live in SE Melb, the vets we go to are Lort Smith, which are NW Melb, or a train ride to Flagstaff(on the w/end Melbourne Central) and a stroll through the market and up the road, usually takes me 1 1/2 hours, the dogs love the walk! I also have a vet friend who kept me supplied with vibravet and baytril when I had rats. She's happy to visit me for an emergency hiccup if I need it, for first aid help until I can get Lort Smith's Animal Ambulance to come.
  18. A rescue I work with(for medium/large breeds) got a cardboard box outside the door of the president's door this morning, inside was a little white dog and an envelope she'd peed on. The note said '2yr old female maltese. Had a litter of 3, 2 died, she almost did. Microchipped(secretary tried everything to get hold of useful info - P Smith in Los Vegas doesn't help) and if we can't return her, she'll be spayed. I've found some info online, the only things the sites agree on is they're a toy breed of dog originating in Italy, they're highly intelligent and they usually need clipping 3 or 4 times a year. Does anyone else have info to share?
  19. This is a governmental balls up. Vets want DNA proof before certification, take the same DNA profile to the council though, and they're allowed to disregard it and claim it's whatever they want it to be.
  20. What about the 'I Disagree with the 2010 Domestic Animals Amendment (Dangerous Dogs) Bill!' facebook group? The group has Mike Bailey, a big voice in the issue.
  21. So, this means that a staffy x whatever that looks kinda like what they think a pit bull looks like, it's as good as dead if an ACO calls you out? This is an absolute load of horseshite.
  22. Slow down people - three sides to every story, the media's say is only one side. What if the owner let the dog run in an off lead area and the dog wandered? You don't chase off leash dogs, the dog will treat it as a game. The dog could've done what mine used to do, he jumped a 6ft fence easily(and you don't expect a GSxLab to be able to do that) You're right though, the dog owner should take responsibility for the injuries. There are always problems you can't anticipate is all I'm saying.
  23. I voted no - Not that I have any, but nobody should be making decisions for me.
  24. What is C7? I've only ever heard of C5. My dogs get C3 every 3 years, apparently the others aren't even required unless the dog lives in a 'prone' area.
  25. Sorry people... The mince he was eating was chicken mince, for feeding to racing greyhounds. He is now eating puppy mince(3 meals a day of about 300g per meal) he still gets 2 or 3 eggs per week and a carrot to chew on. I don't really like the idea of feeding just anything, be it kibble, mince or anything else. As I see it, dogs are supposed to eat a variety of stuff. What the mince lacks, the egg may fulfill that requirement (and it's funny watching him carry the whole egg to his 'safe to eat spot and then having a good ol' munch!),. The blood work came back normal, apparently it's just the kind of dog he is.
