Anyone else been to Kintala?
-
Not many people went to Kintala then...
I expect too much of this forum

If anyone has experienced Kintala Puppy School in Heidelberg, could they please reply to my thread linked below.

Thank you

Well my Siberian Husky pup is 8 weeks old and he's had his first vaccination (C3) so I think it's time to enrol him in a puppy school.
The local vet suggested Kintala Puppy School and I was wondering if anyone had been there with their puppy and experienced it.
Also, a big question:
Is Warringal Parklands in Heidelberg (where they hold the puppy classes) a fenced-off area?
There is off-leash training at Kintala and I'm worried about him running off.
He does come when you call him but he hasn't got the greatest recall
-
Thanks, he already learnt some simple commands like sit, down and stand. He became house-trained quite fast too.
I'll be sure to keep researching ;)
Biting is something I'll have to work really hard on with him though
-
We went to the vet today...
The vet says that he is a little heavy, but he isn't overweight.
However, he's 7 weeks old and he's at 6.8kg now
-
What would you guys say the best method for teaching the dog to stop biting is?
A simple "NO!"? walking away? or something else?
-
You don't need to wait if you carry him! I would be carrying him in your arms and taking him for walks as often as you can, it's important to get him socialised.
You sure that's safe? If it is, then off to Bunnings tomorrow
-
A couple of excellent references from Ian Dunbar. They set a pretty high standard but will give you something to aim for.
Just been reading through the second link - is he serious? I can't believe anyone can do all the things he suggests
You mean the socializing the puppy with 100 different people before 3 months? Nah, easy to achieve. *sarcasm*
We did that We just hung out in front of Bunnings. In fifteen minutes, more than a hundred people passed us by and a lot stopped for cuddles. We did that a few times a week and he loves his people now!
I'd definitely do that, but I'd have to wait until he's had all of his main vaccinations
Although, standing infront of Bunnings is pure genius!

make sure you teach your pup that putting its mouth on a human AT ALL is a big no no
I was going to get him to stop biting, only to mouth, and then stop mouthing completely over time.
Or should I just go straight out into no biting/mouthing at all?
-
The thread's kinda gone off-topic, but this matter is more important.
So the 2 most important things I should focus on for Archie is Bite Inhibition and socialization, right?
Anything else that is really important that I should be aware of? Any tips?
-
Thanks for the help guys I've been reading about taking care of young pups for a while now.

Yeah, I think you have a big boy on your hands there!!
I don't think he looks overweight either.
Did you get to view his parents? Were they big?
We got to view his mother. She seemed more like a male-sized husky compared to other huskies I've seen.
However we didn't get to see the father.
-
:) he looks big for 6 weeks ..but not overweight . Very cute sleeping pic!
So he's going to be massive when he's older? Oh god!

I can feel his ribs without applying much pressure at all. He looks and feels fine but the weight just doesn't seem right :\
I'll put up some pictures soon.
He's going to the vet in a few days but anyway...
-
Is he definitely purebred siberian husky? ie from a registered breeder?
Sounds a little heavy for a pure sibe pup, although my labrador puppy was 8 kg at 8 weeks, so was probably around 6 kg at 6 weeks. Sibes are generally lighter than labs though.
I suppose if he has some malamute or other breed in him then he could well be a normal weight.
The guy said he was a purebred, but he isn't a registered breeder and I can't be 100% sure.
-
He'll be going to the vet on Friday or Saturday for his first vaccination and a checkup. I'll ask the vet then but I was just wondering as it would be better to know earlier.
-
I'm not sure of the weight he 'should' be . It seems a bit heavy ... do you have photos?
I have to ask.... why do you have a 6 week old puppy?
I'll try get some photos.
The man we bought the puppy from is going on vacation and wanted to sell them before he left.
-
SIX weeks old????? Or six months old?
6 weeks
He's overweight, isn't he?
-
My male Siberian Husky puppy is 6 weeks old and weighs in at 5.9kg. I was told by someone that he is heavy for his age.
What should his weight be at 6 weeks?
Method of weighing:Hold him and step on scales. xxkg
Step on scales by myself. yykg
xxKG minus yyKG = 5.9kg
Thanks in advance :D
Kintala Puppy School - Anyone Been There?

If Kintala seems like a bad choice for a Husky (Off-leash at a park), then could anyone suggest another great puppy school with focus on socialization that is in an enclosed area.
Please nothing more than a 20 minute drive from South Morang.
Also, classes have to be late evening classes or weekend classes
