  1. good breeders don't normally advertise in the trading post. you will find that these are mor eof your unregistered breeders. many good breeders have waiting lists too. are you near a librery or book store. read up first that way you will pick up on good questions to ask both yourself as to if this is the breed for you and a breeder. and it will help you to understand about health issues that affect the breed and understand any answers the breeder may give. be prepared they should ask you questions too. there are a few books just about BULL TERRIERS so they will be a good start. some breeders are really helpful others well yeah. you just go to sort through the good and the bad and find one you like. if its a bull terrier you really have your heart set on than you ganna have to warm your other half to the idea. do you homework first than do some ringing round. and have a talk to a few owners and breeders, maybe even join a bull club of sort. some of the groups i know have walks and days out. that maybe a good idea to get out and about so she can see them interact with each other. Its a good way for you also to be 100% sure they ae right for you too. after all this will be a new member of your family.
  2. sorry i tried to get throw all the posts but there was just so many and im running out of time. so i hope i don't say something someone else has Now that the dog is known for biting and given that it was also on the face this is also now a council issue is it not. This dog would/should now be classed as a dangerous dog. Rehoming the dog with a childless family helps nothing, cause it wasn't a child he bit. If they care at all about the dog our the rest of the family they would be putting in time with professional help. is the dog acting so aggresive when there are no visiters or is this an attempt to protect his home given he was so good on holidays. at the end of the day unless your friend asks you what she should do you shouldn't tell het to have him PTS. if you are conserned for your children as i would be than don't go there. have her come visit you. or don't let your kids out. if a pen full time is nor suitable (which i wouldn't like but im not in this position) than how about penning the dog when there are visitors.
  3. Thats sad, my bullies have always been so sweet natured, lazy lounge lizzards, my old girl would watch the cat eat her dinner with a sad look on her face but never harm him at all. I can't give advice on taking on an older dog from a show home cause i don't have experience with that. my bullies have either come from breeders as a pup or rescue. but they have all been lovely natured dogs and I'd own one over a foxy or silky terrier any day. granted they can be a bit full on when young and/or playing a game etc but it all comes with training. I didn't find my bullies any harder to train than anyother older dog ive taken on.
  4. NEWS the dog has had 7 very large fat pups between 3:30am and 7:30am, but she's still bleeding heavy and panting heavy too its now almost 1pm. one pup is very lifeless so someone told her to pick it up and swing it up and down. she said it want breathing when it was born but after doing "the flick" she said it was lifeless but breathing. she has no idea if she passed a sack for each pup. and the bitch's tummy is still quiet hard and lumpy she said. mum is feeding pups on the fold out mattrass out of the sofa lounge where she gave birth.
  5. yes please if you want to PM the link that be great. I honestly hope nothing goes wrong cause she's already said she's hasn't even go the money to by a cheap thermometer. so i can't see her taking her to the for a c-secton. UPDATE- still no pups.
  6. There is a law that came in on January 1st. that states that anyone owning more than 3 entire breeding dogs or cats must become a registered business and have an ABN number regardless of how many litters they do or don't breed and regardless of whether there is a profit made or not. Those not required to conform to this are those affiliated with certain groups such as if you are a member of several organisations listed such as DogsVic, Cat Protection Sociey etc. thats interesting! is that just in VIC or Australia wide? haven't heard it here in QLD
  7. plenty of purebreed dogs end up in pounds and shelters too, but something you hardly ever see is purebred pups like you do see the cross bred pups in shelters. We have laws that say how many cars you can sell or garage sales a person or household can have in a year. why not limint the number of litters? I heard the RSPCA was talking about bringing in a lic to be able to even advertise litters. Im not sure how that would work it could lower the number born but also increase the numbers dump.
  8. I think that one bad experience can shape our whole view toward a breed, size or look. Its called stereotyping isn't it. we do it all the time most of the time we don't even know we've done it and im not just talking about dogs. eg if you had dinner at a say Indian restaurant and it was your first time eatting curry or indian and it was really bad that you'd prob go on the rest of your life saying you dislike curry or Indian food.
  9. Your right petshops can't sell with papers and NO the puppy breeder selling the pups to the shop do not have to have them micro chipped because the new laws state pups need to be micro chipped from 8 weeks and most pet stores require the pups to be in store by 6 weeks. I seen so called purebred bull terriers in a petshop about 3 years ago. we asked how much there were (no because i wanted one but just to see what they were charging) the all white male was $1200 and the white female with the black eye patch was $2000. I almost fell over! I could have got 2 of my girl with papers for what they were asking. the lady added if i was interested not to leave it long cause they had only had them a few days and already sold 3. personally I believe if pet stores have to sell puppies and kittens they should have to give a min 24-48hr cooling of period. Where the buyer is sent home with the info and told to think about it. Impulse buying is the worst form of shopping.
  10. she's starting to take the advice form a lady who i think is a Guinea Pig Breeder but has breed a few litters, or maybe im getting confused with two people giving her advice. She was given an approx to have vet checked, first vacc and micro chipped the woman got all in a twist saying how it was far to much, no vet would charge that blar blar blar..and is talking her in to asking $250ea, taking $100 dep before the pups see a vet and using that money to have there needles, vet check and micro chip done. But if she donen't sell all the pups before there due than whats she ganna do....o well sorry i can't afford to vacc, micro chip your pup cause i haven't sold the rest of the litter. and she's starting to take orders now cause she dosen't want to be suck with them any longer than 8 weeks. And im sure she's a nice natured dog but other than that she looks like a scrawny adolescent that hasn't had the chance to grown into her own body. poor this has massive milk bags hanging down like a cow. as for the welping box she's given her a blanket. is it the same to Vacc a small breed as it is to vacc a large breed?
  11. can we please not make this about her not being registered but having no idea whats going on and no money and planning more! i'd love to be able to say something to her that will give her something to think about.
  12. Can someone please give me an approx $ that i can go back to her and tell her to expect to pay raising these pups from birth to an age they can be homed. someones told her its about $45 for vacc and $25 for micro chipping. but no ones said anything about feeding, worming, flea control etc.
  13. we will never stop BYB but thats not my biggest issue here. This girl has said she has no money for a vet! people have given her some pointers but she seems to come up with a reason why she can't do something cause she either don't want to or hasn't go the money. someone sugested taking her temp. she can't cause she don't want to use the thermomiter 'she has and hasn't got money to buy one. the dog is a ridgeback cross she's still growing. I honestly don't think she's taking on much of what ppl are saying. if she hasn't go the money to buy a cheap thermomter than how this pups ganna get fed or mum for that.
  14. Sometimes people just AAHHH just been following a topic on another site about a young girl and her pregnant dog. She started out about 3 days ago asking if her "PUPPY" she called her (just a year old) was pregnant. She said she hadn't planned to breed her yet but her male got to her at least 3 times. Next question was when would she be due, then what should she be looking for and when it starts what to do etc. turns out the Ridgeback cross is only days away. Granted good on her for asking questions but some asked her if she didn't want the pups why hadn't she taken the dog to a vet reply she can't aford to take her to a vet, then someone has asked her what she plans to do with the pups reply sell them for $150ea. Someone else has commented that if she wasn't planning on having the litter is she planning on having her desexed reply NO CAUSE SHË's A REALLY NICE DOG AND I PLAN TO GET AT LEAST 2 or 3 MORE LITTERS FROM HER CAUSE I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS THAT WANT PUPS. I just find this so so sad. and wrong on a few levels. Poor girl expected to pop out litter after litter for an owner who can't afford a vet, knows very little and all cause she's a nice dog. Besides 2 or 3 more litters how many friends has she got! Im sure there are plenty of very nice pups at the local shelter!
  15. Thanks im on QLD. I have a lot of breed books many from when i was a kid that i've kept over the years, but are there any books relating to showing and what are good grooming books. Over the years I had horses i read alot but always tried to get Australian books. just found it easyer or more helpful to read it how its done here insted of England or America. is it the same with dog books? Any one recommend some MUST READS.
  16. I may have had a win. today i took to the patio with a hard brush, sugar soap and the Karcher. and she's gone back to doing her job in the garden. well for now. i guess i'll see in the morning, Hey!
  17. I am use to a far bit of grooming when i had the horses. all needed gooming every day, rugs on and off, and if they had been clipped sometime they had 3-4 rugs on.
  18. which ever i choose will need to be suited to our family as i would want them to be a pet first.
  19. yep her bed and food is on the same patio too.
  20. Im keen to start a new hobby. Im missing not being involved with horses anymore and always liked the idea of showing a dog/dogs. any pointers as to how to get started. are there any breeds i should keep clear of (starting out). I like a range of breeds and sizes. Bull terrier, Dobermann, cocker Spaniel, dachshund, pointer, Engish Setter, German Shorthaired pointer, miniature pinscher, Yorkshire Terrier, staffordshire bull terrier just to name a few. Some of which i have owned over the years or as a child. I realise that I would need to research any breed i consider and that i need to take into account the home we have and time. I do have kids ranging from 2-12. I live on acreage. I do have other pets (chickens, 2 cats and a 3 yr old staffy). Someone is just about always home. as my partner works from home. I have a far bit of spare time everyday. And never go on holidays. Im hoping that it will also be something i can also do with my oldest daughter. My partner has grown up showing chickens but Im just not that keen on them other than their eggs. And I'm not looking to rush in. I do have my name down with a breeder for a MBT but they don't have any litters planned as of yet and thay also have a number of other people on a list. im open to sugestions
  21. well my staffy has been with us now for about 2mths. she's 3 and has come from a home where she spent much of her time on a chain in a back yard. since she's been here she's been such an angel. We live on 2 acres and she has run of much of the place. She can come in when i'm home but at night when we go to bed she must stay outside. normally she poo's in the Garden. which we don't mind cause its means you don't hit hidden landmines in the grass with the mower, if you should miss one in the pick up before mowing. The other day it rained and she pooed on the patio. although i wasn't pleased about it, it was raining cats and dogs out and figured she didn't want to get wet. BUT now she's taken up doing it all the time and weeing too, even when its not raining. yesterday we had people over and she did both right beside the outdoor setting when i walked inside to get the visiters a drink. its been cleaned up and hosed off evertime when we've seen it but what is best to deter her from continueing to do it.
  22. Nor do I. What I have issue with is the huge gaps of cause and effect in the OPs claim that they have been 'overwhelmed' with the numbers of dogs from breeders, that need to be rehomed into one dog households, because the dogs are not socialised properly. And this is further evidenced by 25% of rehomed dogs having to be rehomed again. Come on. My criticism of the OP has nothing to do with me breeding ASD or CAS - but everything to do with the OP not considering breed traits of the dogs being advertised, AND that if any rehomed dog has to be 'relisted', it's because the dog was not bred correctly or socialised - and nothing to do with the actual mismatch of dog and home. It is a ridiculous argument. Well you clearly have a bee in your bonnet about something, but you’re over analysing my post with assumptions. I made a brief post about something I have noticed. I didn’t bother listing every ad word for word just gave a brief idea of what was being listed. If I had listed them all word for word it would have taken up pages in the original post. I was unaware that all posts/topics on a forum had to be an argument. I’ve not said “that if any rehomed dog has to be 'relisted', it's because the dog was not bred correctly or socialised”. I’ve just said they were relisted due to not working out.at the new homes. This really has nothing to do with which breeds! At the end of the day I was referring to dogs being listed on a RESUCE group page that’s state in the ad that they are coming from either breeders or are ex show dogs or have been in the show ring or even ex breeding bitches. I’m not making it up. What would the point of that be! When reading where they are coming from I assumed (clearly my mistake) that they would be to some point trained, socialised with other dogs (given that there would be other dogs both at shows and within the current home they are in). Some of the ads I have seen have said that the dog has only lived solo/alone in a run/pen or has never lived with other dogs or socialised with other dogs. Personally I have seen many older Bull Terriers chance homes (either with friends, family or associates) and adjusted to living with new dogs, or other animals or even children. I know that personalities also play a part but the dogs I was referring to don’t seem to have been given the chance to get on in the first place because the posts state they have always lived alone. The original post was not and is not referring to just Bull Terriers. My understanding of the word RESCUE is something that needed saving. When I hear someone rescuing a dog I imagine that the dog is in need of saving, maybe it’s in poor health, being abused or impounded and at risk of being PTS. I don’t think of the type I have seen listed. I only see more harm than good for the reputation of a breed (which could be any breed for that matter) in the case of the dogs I’m referring too. What message does it send to prospective breed enthusiast about the breed if even after the dog has had showing etc. or raised in a breeding kennel situation has to be listed on a RESCUE site to be rehomed. But I’m sure you will find something else to criticize me personally about because you’ve taken the post in the wrong way and read into it with things I haven’t said. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I feel here if I’d said the sky was blue it wouldn’t be. If you think the topic is ridiculous than don’t bother reading it! There’s no need to make out I’m some sort of idiot!
  23. second that! sometimes dry food can also do more harm than good depending on whats in it.
  24. You said they were ex show dogs and ex breeding bitches. You do understand that the activity of showing dogs in itself amounts to 'socialisation'? Bull Terriers, like some other breeds do not readily accept other dogs once adults. Moreover, dogs living under the same roof have little correlation to how a dog behaves with other dogs in a neutral setting. My issue with your thread and pontifications about breeding for the betterment of the breed (sic) is that they read like you do not know much about dog shows, dog interaction and dare I say it, dog breeding. That's no big deal in itself - but when you make draw negative conclusions based on incomplete understanding or experience, and announce your statements as if what you say is fact all you do is perpetuate bias and misinformation. Well I’m sorry if I offended anyone by pointing out what I believed to be a concern to myself. Nowhere have I ever stated these are facts or exact figures. As I do believe I have used the terms “about, almost, nearly etc.” none of which I believe would be used in a document that I was stating to be 100% correct in figures.I'm also not referring to one group, breed or one ad but a number of them. What is offensive is that from reading a small post that you could claim to have any idea of me, my knowledge or experience. Other than I have stated that I said I’m not a breeder and I don’t run a rescue group or the site. Let’s not ASSUME I have little knowledge of dog breeding etc. what is clear is that from one of your first replies, you had already miss read my original post. I can assure you, I do understand how dog breeding works though I may be learning about the registration side and terms etc. used within a registered breeder social group and do not claim to know everything, but I have a high understanding of the reproductive system right down to the hormones, complications etc. (which I assume has something to do with breeding!)And I may have said that I'm not a breeder but I never said that in my life time I've never seen a litter born or raised a litter. And although my experience with showing is mostly horse related I assume the principle would be the same. I originally left it as breed specific groups because I didn’t want to make this about Bull terriers cause although some of the groups I was referring to are bully groups not all are. Just because I have a bully as my profile pic doesn’t mean they are the only breed I have an interest in. I don’t feel the need to list them all as it’s not about pointing the finger at a specific breed. I may have forgot to add all the particulars in my original post etc. next time I will endeavour to include all facts and to state where I’ve made an assumption and get my point across more clearly, something I struggle with after having a stroke. Or maybe just one of the disadvantages of posting on a forum and not talking in person. I'm not claiming to believe that dogs are the same as horses but the principles of breeding, showing and/or re homing are much the same. Again sorry
