  1. The Elkhound definitely did Not get group three, was funny driving home people phoning with congratulations, here we were thinking it was for Stephanie's third place in the handler final, which for us was like winning Best in Show, because she has trained and campaigned her beagle all on her own, and competes nearly every weekend with her.
  2. Wow how awesome is this service, I found it today while grazing the Events diary, now you can not only look at the schedule, but also print entry forms etc, keep an online calendar etc. Oh I love DOL, you guys are amazing
  3. You cannot expect a vibrant and growing show scene if you only put effort into encouraging another generation of a family already in the scene to participate. The secret lies in NEW BLOOD with the time, money and commitment to exhibiting. That means adults and what do we do to encourage new adult handlers..... You know the answer to that. A newb adult handler only achieves any kind of welcome via sheer luck and stories of hostility and lack of help abound. Every single one of us has the potential to welcome or deter new entrants to the show ring and frankly its something some of our number need to be reminded of frequently. Yes in a way I agree Haredown, we are relatively new to the showing scene after a 15 year break - the only differnce that I made this time is that I have chosen whom I associate with, follow my instinct for a nice animal, be pleasant & say hello to everyone, if they dont want to say hello back thats their problem, and keep my opinions to myself unless it is on the way home in the car.... makes a very pleasant experience showing. How can you encourage new people to the dog world when breeders are continuously saying to people "Sorry we dont sell show dogs" when we were looking for our labrador I lost count how many people we called looking for one to be told this, we were so disheartened until I finally came across a person who was more than happy to sell us a show dog, I also know of other people that have had the same experience, or breeders sell in partnership & put restrictions on the dogs, fancy paying 1500 for a puppy, feeding, successfully campaigning it deciding to use it over your own bitch, then to be told that you cant sell any "show" puppies they have to be pet homed, how is this encouraging to new people?? Our new puppy arrives into Australia next week from very successfull bloodlines, with no strings attached, fully signed over to love, nourish and show to our hearts content - we are so excited :) And if I ever did breed a litter, I would be more than happy to encourage newcomers who were after a show puppy :)
  4. This is an interesting topic. Isnt child handlers supposed to be fun?? Aren't the kids there to learn and be nurtured?? How about we start by someone policing Victorian clubs that hold shows, to make sure child handlers are being held, I have lost count already this year the number of victorian shows I have attended that have not had a handlers class!! Why on earth should there be restrictions on Junior Handlers, shouldnt we be encouraging the youth of today, are they not the future of our breeds - you have just got to look at the ANKC stastistics compared to ten years ago to the number of dogs in breeds/being shown has diminished, isnt this something that should be looked at and asked Why??? Something I would like to see brought in for child handlers is a dog qualifying requirement for the Royals and State finals to make the playing field more equal "that the child must have handled the dog in at least three/four breed classes before the said dog is eligible to compete at a Handler final" after all how many people are going to allow a child to handle their multi best in show winner in its breed class!! Not all our child hanlders have access to multi best in show winners for the finals or know the "Right" people.
  5. I was after some advice on the best shipping company to use to import a dog from the UK to Aus. Thanks in advance
  6. Just curious why are shows followng the international way of only awarding best in Group 1 2 3 4 and puppy & baby in groups - Do we not live in Australia?? Do Minor, Juniors, Intermediates & Austbreds not deserve an award for their classes in Group?? I personally will not be entering any shows that have this format other than the Royals, e.g. was going to enter Bulla Autumn & now will be entering NSW shows.... Curious about your opinions!!
  7. Hi Ziggyboy, I also have a Graabine Elkhound, whilst she does bark it is only for a reason i.e she wants to go to the toilet & wants some attention, they are not a dog to be left alone in the back yard all day & night, they love to do things with their owners. it is very important to socialise them at an early age. The are very affectionate & love children, but ours hates cats!!
  8. hi I was wondering if anyone was interested in sharing a cabin with us at Mt Gambier on the easter Weekend, we have booked for the Thursday to Monday nights, it is a 2 bedroom delux Cabin so you will have your own room at the Pine Country Caravan Park, your share will be half the cost of five nights. CHANGE OF PLANS WE HAVE BEEN OFFERRED A SHARE SPOT IN ANOTHER CABIN WITH PEOPLE WE KNOW - BUT THIS CABIN IS STILL AVAILABLE IF SOMEONE WANTS IT
  9. Wow this seems to be a very touchy subject. Are rules and laws not to be abided, if we speed driving and get caught we get charged. This ruling has been in force for years now, but there seems to be the elite few who can afford to not follow these laws. Really is sending a bitch to NZ to whelp just so that you can dock her puppies tails really worth it, after all the purpose is really only cosmetic. Also I have noticed a Doberman breeder who was showing a couple of young dogs that were not imported and had docked tails, how was this allowed to happen?? When you see these top breeders flouting the laws and getting away with it, is this fair to all those people doing the right thing?? This motion could be re worded in a way to allow imports genuinely bred overseas, I.e maybe if the bitch had resided there for up to 2 years. I agree with this motion, it will bring equality to the show ring and award people who are doing the right thing by following the laws.

  17. Hi Haffyluv, Welcome to the world of dog showing. I am also an ex horse show person. when we first started out we were looking for a lab and quite quickly got very disheartened, due to all the knockbacks by breeders, we kept persisting and finally found what we were looking for and she is adorable at 13 months nearly titled, we were really lucky with our whippet, she was the only female left in the litter and she us currently the no 3 rising star hound in Victoria and has had many age in group and show wins.... while at a show we were asked if interested in campaigning our Norwegian Elkhound, hence Kimmie came to our family and she is now the no2, rising star hound in Vic, we have just been asked to campaign another Elkhound so Scooter will join our family in two weeks. we were looking for a dog for my daughter to show and were offered a beagle, and my daughter and Ruby are doing extremely well, they won their first in Show class last Saturday. We are truely blessed to have such lovely dogs, but also for the wonderful people and breeders that we have met, who have entrusted their dogs into our care, we have only been showing for nearly 12 months now. one thing I will say we always present our selves professionally, we both wear suits, make sure we are neat and tidy and have a smile on our faces,. Good luck in your search, one thing to remember is that the top winning, always advertising kennel, may not be the only place to search for your superstar
