I freakin love the SchutzShep dog. They are one of the most beautiful dogs i discovered in my searching !! I sit and admire them for hours loool.

Oh yeah, thats what im talking bout ;) !! BtS, apologies for the highly off topic question but I've been wondering for ages, what made you get a Samoyed when you have such an interest in working GSDs? I don't meet many working dog lovers who like or want to own Spitz breeds! Good question. Ive always loved Samoyeds and had wanted to get one for a long time. The reason i didnt get a working GSD, is because at the moment i am not able to accommodate for a working dog. There i decided to take the time and learn every single thing i can about working dogs, and what i want in a working dog. Its very important to me to take the time to get the right working pup. I am also very intrested in Policing, and there is a big chance i will be going to the Academy this year, if not then certainly next. My aim is to get into the Dog Unit, which requires you to be an officer for 3 years first.

Ahh Jesus Christ, Eff this im not posting no more, i cant freaking believe what people turned this thread into. I was actually enjoying Nekhbet's posts as she is someone i respect alot and one of the first people i would go to get advice from as she knows !!.... Damn some people on this site do my head in thats why i hardly post here. Im going to take a piss now and try to water my neighbours' roses 6 houses down.

Schutzhund isn't personal protection training, you may as well use a dog trained in Flyball and hope it will protect you on the street. It's not that dogs trained in sport are no good at protection, the reason they are no good at protection is because they aren't trained in personal protection, they are trained in sport, otherwise they are the same dogs taken on a different training path. I understand what you are saying. I know that ideally the GSD is the type of dog that should adapt to any work/sport chosen. But would you personally choose the same pup if you intended it for sport or for PP? Btw i am still learning so im pretty new to all this. I have read extensively on the topic and just expressing my opinion

Is this the reason Germany has dumped German Shepherds from the forces, swapped to Malinois:) I find that sad. The strength,courage,drive,willingness to work,and love for the handler are unrivaled in the correct GSD. Aidan2, there is a difference between a dog bred for shutzhund, and a dog for PP. Sport dogs have very high prey drives. While for PP, you would be looking at a dog with moderate prey drive but also civilian drive. The ratio most PP handlers look for is a ratio of 60/40 with the 60% being civilian drive. Ofcourse the ratio differs between handlers but you get my idea. If you dont agree i would love to hear your opinion on this issue :) Robbie Not really, I have no idea what you mean... My "sport" dog has plenty of prey and "civil" drive (as you call it). I have never heard of a ratio when referring to drives, I didn't know you could breed ratio/ numbers into dogs. You mentioned Czech dogs - The Czech dogs here in OZ are Schutzhund titled dogs or have been bred from Schutzhund titled dogs......... Sport dogs.......... I can point you in the direction of where Hans ( co founder of the alpine/jinopo line) measured drives in percentage. With many other top trainers using percentage to describe the level of drive. Hans gave a 50/50. Where these dogs titled here in Oz? You can get a SchH 3 dog, awesome at doing the circuit he has been taught to do a thousand times. Bring him into a real life situation, where some guy is mugging you on the street thats where i would want the dog to react. The SchH test was originally brought out to show the strengths of the dog. And im sure on a world class level those titles still represent exactly that. These dogs are titled...No thanks you can have them. These are dogs that had to pass a test to be in the ring, the decoy did not even put real pressure on the dogs. That is the bitework of a major conformation show in Germany and ALL these dogs have SchH titles

I would definetely want a pup. To me it is important to grow together, as it strengthens the bond between dog and handler thus forming a better working team later on. Ofcourse buying a pup is always a gamble. But its a risk im willing to take. I want to be involved in everything, and go through the whole learning curve with my dog. Jeff, those are the two i found as well. I absolutely love the dogs produced by Beychief. I am defenitely going to look into it further,and in regards to the ShH Club, I will try to get in contact with Sydney Sport Dog Club. I was just wondering if anyone on this site has working line GSDs and would be able to post up some pics :)

Thanks alot for the links Jeff. Atm i want to start looking at potential puppies, but i got no clue where to start . I want a breeder that questions me about everything i want to do with the puppy, so they can match the puppy to my needs. I dont want to go to a breeder, and have them say 'Oh pick whatever you want', pay, and walk out of there. I am prepared to do the hard yards, but i will need the correct pup to work with. Especially that now i am doing Policing, and my aim is to get into the Dog Unit someday :) So i would love a pup i can work with and get to know everything about these lines of amazing dogs.

Hey everyone, I havent posted here for a while, but i just wanted to ask people on their experiences here in Australia with PP dogs. Personally i am a big fan of the Czech dogs that excel in this field, particularly my favourite line would be the alpinebase/Jinopo dogs. Now i am still learning alot about this field, and the characteristics of dogs that stand out. I am a big fan of the old style german shepherd working lines who are as true to what the founder wanted them to be. So i am wanting to hear from people who have experience or just interest in this field and their advice on finding a breeder in Australia, and also a trainer/mentor that is recommended here in Australia. I was used to my lab shedding, he dropped a huge amount of hair every single day, so it's not a problem for me. With sammys you will have long white hair in food, drinks, clothes, car haha, but if the hair isnt an issue to you. I suggest you really look into samoyeds. Truly the best breed i have ever owned. Get to understand the spitz breed and its independence. It is described by many as a cat trait

Hey Salamancat, you will find soo many amazing breeds. I strongly suggest you research ALOT !! Read whatever you can get your hands on, and jump to the breed threads alot of information about all the breeds from breeders and owners. Invaluable tips

SAMOYED !!! If you are prepared for a fair amount of grooming and a firm yet fair hand in training they are the best dog you could ever own ( im biased ofcourse) . They just adore people, and when well socialized they are amazing dogs. Being a spitz breed, they are known to have an independant streak, so training is a must ( as with any dog really) from a young age. Also i must stress on the shedding. You will have to learn to love it everywhere !! EDITED : SPELLING

Well being a young guy and everything, and having people constantly jump in the car and turn white in seconds( Samoyed hair really gets in there :p ) I tried every trick in the book to manage the hair. I failed miserably. Now i just have to vaccuum it whenever he was in it, and hope the rest get stuck to peoples clothes and they can carry them out of the car hahah

Hope all goes well for you, like others said pups usually grow out of it. Ive seen a couple of pups with the same issue but a trip to the chiro wouldnt hurt.

Spot on!! i love this post. People used to haggle me all the time when i used to sell some hand raised birds. They didnt understand the time and effort i put into them. Waking up all hours of the night to hand feed and such. Then during the day actually taking them to work to feed every 2-3 hours and get them socialised it pissed me off when people haggle thinking its just a bird, therefore i stopped hand raising and only did it for myself. I really wont add to the OP's question as i think everyone has said what i would say. What i would like to add is get people to go see these beautiful healthy dogs getting PTS( i did it btw because i wanted to learn what happens to APBT in our pounds) and see if it doesnt break their hearts. I still dream about it 2 years later...

With bobby, the groomer knew i was going through a very hard time having to shave him that she put a massive pink bow when i picked him up for a laugh. Some groomers just do it for a laugh as they found it hysterical lol I took it out as soon as we got to the car.

Just because i cant say Samoyed !! Ill suggest the Schipperke. Still a spitz and they are robust, agile, and go hard. Worked with a couple of them. Great dogs for what your looking for !!
