  1. I am considering having an at home AI kit handy next time my bitch comes into season but I was wondering what other's experiences with them are like?
  2. I'm looking for a road transport company that goes to the South of NSW? I cannot find one online that does not fly, and would rather go by road transport than have the dog flown. I know that flying is usually better, but for this dog, I just don't know how he would go in a plane.. So if anyone knows a good road transport company that is good with the dogs, reasonably priced and does the south of NSW could someone let me know please!
  3. What an idiot, but I have heard this sort of irrational fear of dogs before from parents. A member of my family is involved in a program which goes into schools with dogs and on one visit, one parent tried to get the whole program removed from the school, as this parent felt that it was unsafe for dogs to be anywhere near children. The aim of the program is to teach safety around dogs and of course the dogs involved are all thoroughly tested and trained, but this did not matter. It ended in a compromise, the dog would be allowed to enter the school but her child would not be involved in anyway what so ever. This meant that the dog and handler had to enter earlier than they would of normally, through a separate, hidden entrance and had to stay in a staff room during breaks to avoid this child even seeing the child. So it seems there are people out there who just hate the thought of dogs around children in any circumstance which is just crazy and irrational.
  4. As others have said you should never ever ever leave a check chain on a dog unless you are training it at the time. Your very lucky that the dog has not caught it on something and ended up hung, which so easily happens. I personally do not have anything on my dogs at home, and use training to get them to stop doing things they shouldn't, as unattended ANY collar could be dangerous, let alone a check, or metal collar. I have used check chains with some success with some of my dogs, but some of the 'quieter' ones would absolutely tremble if I even attempted using them during training. It's all about having the right tool in the right situation, but also, remembering the mantra check release check release check release. I see many people in the general public using check chains as 'chokers' and not releasing the chain and simply dragging the dog about with it tight, one of my biggest pet peeves. They should probably only be used by people who have experience training dogs, or who are willling to go and learn, but I'm pretty sure most are sold with a warning label not to leave on the dog long term, and it's apparent that some people can't even do that.
  5. Here it seems to go alphabetically on the owner's surname.
  6. Good stewards are: Polite On the ball, have a mind like a steel trap Humourous Nice with newbies, but firm with those that should know better Knows the rules & reg's Set's up the next class while the previous judge is being judged Doesn't mutter rude or nasty comments under thier breath or to a judge Keeps things lighthearted, even when scolding people for being unorganised We have some great stewards here, and I feel for them, they have to put up with alot. I haven't really come across a really bad steward except for once, no one could hear them over the crowd, got every group mixed up and we all had to be rejudged, and worse than that (because everyone makes mistakes!) they were just plain rude, and when a dog won that they didn't think was right would comment loudly to thier friends sitting outside the ring that that was not what 'they would of done!' - made you feel like crap! Stewards have to put up with so much, like people who have been showing for years not being ready for Group even though it was announced 10 minutes before and they don't have a lead on thier BOB, in the pouring rain, or people missing thier calls and then demanding the class in group being ran again, even though they called the number 11 times and the people were standing a metre away and not saying anything, etc, etc. They all are usually pretty good about it! Don't know if I'd have the patience without calling people absent, especially when they are standing 3 feet away and not answering thier calls!
  7. Oh my god Im bawling, that is so sad and sweet
  8. Surely someone would notice something like that lying about - hopefully someone nice has it, and you get it back
  9. I love the Icelandic Sheepdog, what a beautiful dog! Love this, thanks for the post, love seeing all the photos!
  10. I was just reading thier site further, and it seems they hope to get producers of other products such as collars and halti's on board to make 'yellow' products that point out the DINOS. I can only surmise here, but I would assume that red would not of been the colour of choice as it would indicate an aggresive dog (like the collars that are red and white), and I think the message is that they are not aggresive dogs or to be feared, but just dog's that need some space. If they can get the marketing behind to a large enough level, I think it could work.
  11. I managed to trace my dog's ancestors all the way back to the first tibbies brought out of Tibet around WWII, and it's only 11 generations back! I was SO excited!!!www.tibbie.net
  12. Does anyone know if show training is on tommorow night at Hillsborough? If so, what time, and can we just show up, or do we need to call someone and book? Or have I got my days muddled? Thanks :)
  13. I have personal experience with Central Coast Lost and Found animals - they found my brother's dog within 4 hours of putting her up, and I also have seen MANY people reunited with thier animals quickly - it is a fantastic resource - I even once saw this poor girl who had lost her cat running around in the rain desperately putting up flyers - i pulled over and told her about the FB page, and bam within 3 hours the cat was back at her home.

  16. Hi Everyone, Im currently looking around and considering options for my next dog and was looking at maybe importing one. Has anyone recently imported a dog from NZ? It's a small dog (about 5-7kgs) and would be coming into Sydney? Also have heard a rumour that quarantine is not as long for dogs from NZ is that true? Thanks
  17. You know those dogs who rush the fences along the street. Well, actually its an offence and just around the corner from me, two dogs; a young Siberian and a Malamute who were absolutley lovely dogs 12 months ago, have recently been seized and euthanased because the owner used to let them run up to the fence but kids and other people made them reactive and they bit a few people. What do you mean it is an offence? What law is it breaking? Im just curious because we have a 9 foot colorbond fence on one of our property boundaries, and one of our cavies rushes up to it, and barks when people walk by? She was not like this always, but was absolutely harrassed by kids in our street, and it has made her a nervous wreck. She is not aggresive, just barks in a protective way, but I have never heard of a rule that bans your dog from barking from inside it's own yard, when restricted by a fence? Perhaps the dogs were seized because they bit people?
  18. I'm not going to Henty, but I think you should be congratulated for providing such thorough and detailed information for exhibitors. I know how many times I have shown up to a new showground, and had no idea where to park or where my ring was - so good on you!
  19. I'm so glad reading this that others feel guilty putting thier dogs off thier beds as well!!!!!! I had to put my foot down the other night because my girl would not stop licking a sore i had on my arm, and i couldn't get to sleep so i put her off. She went to sleep pretty quick, but not after giving me the most heartbreaking sad face you can imagine.
  20. I think people need to accept that there is NO WAY IN H*LL that the tail docking laws are going to be repealed, it's been brought up as an issue multiple times on this thread - it aint going to happen. Im not for or against docking, im neutral, but I do think we all need to adhere to the laws that govern our dogs. I also think that people need to calm down a bit - I can't see how stopping tail docking will "be the ruin" of any breed. It just takes a bit of time to get used to seeing some breeds with a tail - I know for me personally I found seeing Rotties with tails really wrong, but they have sort of grown on me now. Am I right in saying that the only circumstances that a dog should appear in the ring with a shortened docked appearing tail are situations of naturally occuring bob-tails, and tails that have been accidentally injured in some way either at birth or during adult hood? If I am right, I cannot believe that we all accept that all the dogs that are still being shown with docked tails meet that requirement? Also, I think the motion could not of been passed the way it was, so suspect that maybe it was just the ANKC trying to frighten people into doing the right thing. Just curious, if the motion had said that locally bred dogs with docked tails could no longer be shown, but if you could prove that your dog came from a country were docking is legal, or if you had documented proof from a vet that the tail had to be removed, then it could be excluded from the rule and allowed to be shown, would of that been acceptable to people?
  21. I agree, I don't understand, if you want the assurance of knowing what the dog is 100% buy a pedigree purebred. If you buy a rescue, or a cross-breed, just love your dog for the unique and wonderful mutt that it is.
  22. Whether or not we all agree with tail docking or not, it has been made illegal by all states in this country. Part of the public identity crisis the pedigree dog world is suffering, is the perception that we do not follow the rules and the ANKC is a toothless body that does not enforce it's Code of Ethics. Unfortunately, for some, tail docking was banned, not by the ANKC, but by government bodies, I can see how many people seeing so many docked tails in the ring would get the idea that the show breeders are not abiding the rules, and by allowing the dogs to be shown blatently, and in alot of cases winning, that the ANKC, and the state authorities are condoning the subversion of the rules.
  23. Just realised that Mr Ramon Podesta has actually judged at the Sydney Royal before in 2005
  24. This is disgusting. The charity should not accept the money, as Im sure if the woman knew her dog who was eating and playing with police after he was found, was going to PTS she would not of left them the money in the first place.
