  1. Yes, I tried searching previous forum posts, but I couldn't find anything specific
  2. Hi all, We have tried to breed 3 different bitches (2 have successfully whelped in the past and are 5 and 4yo, other is 2yo daughter of one out of litter of 7 pups) – 2 different dogs (a 20 month old import and a 12 month old), but have not been able to check their semen under microscope yet. Prog tested 2 of the bitches and was apparently perfect timing. We don’t breed very often but until now have only had 1 failed pregnancy in 8 years. I was talking to a long time breeder and they mentioned a preservative ethoxyquin. They had a similar thing happen and changed feed with success. So I started googling and a website mentioned it may be in fishmeal but not listed on ingredients. Another person said emu oil might reduce pregnancy rate. Fish meal and emu oil are in the feed I buy, which is “holistic” and states it has no artificial colours and preservatives, but should I be worried about natural preservatives especially if feed lasts 18 months? Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks in advance
  3. Thanks for the heads up, I did some reading of the PDS, I will have to do some investigating for dog travel insurance I think
  4. I am mostly bothered by the fact they say it is a cost recovery? Recovery from what? There have been no dog disease outbreaks that I have heard of causing a cost increase. The thing that really peeves me is that the racing industry introduced EI into Australia back in 2007, then jumped up and down and were compensated and given everything they demanded including free vaccinations and compensation for service fee losses, etc due to lockdown and now the pleasure horse industry is left to pay a few hundred just for initial vaccinations against HeV, while the racing industry kicked up a stink and don't even have to vaccinate. So now that the horse industry (racing) maybe seems to have had an influence in stopped any increase on equine quarantine fees in the recent review, I am left wondering, why are non-horse animal imports lumped with a nearly 300% increase in fees (for 1/3 of the work load), while horse imports receive 0% increase??? Big question is: Is it bad management of dog imports OR dog (and cat) imports subsidising for losses of bad management of other imports?
  5. I have a pup coming in next month, very excited. The breeder has done it before but nearly got caught out with all the changes. We have someone organising flights, etc. Bit cranky about the quarantine fees increase... DAFF have released new fees increase only in mid-May... "The department is reviewing five biosecurity cost recovered arrangements that will result in some fee adjustments commencing 1 July 2014. The review is necessary to return the department’s cost recovery arrangement to a sustainable footing and to ensure continued compliance with the government's cost recovery policy and guidelines. Four of the five reviews have been completed. The department is now implementing the new rates of charge for these biosecurity services." From what I can gather fees have increased for dog/cats etc., but looks like the horse industry might have "blocked" an increase in their fees??? - daily fee for dogs have gone from $39/day to $149/day!!! Cats up from 29 to 149... I have my boy already insured with normal petplan, they didn't ask about where the dog was? I haven't read the product disclosure cover to cover, I hope he is still covered?
  6. Yes I will be booking "grooming sessions" or at least 1 (as Eastern Creek is a 16 hour round trip for me). The only good thing is that Eastern Creek is still open I suppose
  7. DAFF have released new fees after a recent review. All Animal Imports (non-horse) fees have increased. The horse industry must have put up a good fight as their fees did not increase! I'm not too happy as my import boy arrives mid July and DAFF new dates meant it has taken longer (not quicker) for him to be able to leave the country of export and more boarding/vet fees on other end also http://www.daff.gov.au/bsg/biosecurity-fee-review-2014 Daily fee for dogs has gone from $39/day to $149/day

  9. Hi there, Hope you are getting closer to your goal, it is very exciting to find new avenues. Dogzonline really is a great way to communicate and share some educated information. I also am in the process of importing a dog, he will arrive in quarantine last week of July, but in the meantime I am trying to source frozen semen and have been told it will maybe cost $2500 on top of service fee. Is this normal, from NZ to AUS? Thanks in advance, Kim
  10. That's why it is only fair to read all the replies before judging and having a dig at someone. If I were a backyarder I'd have not been sourcing AI semen in the first place. I would have just used the closest dog possible. Thanks for help.
  11. The only good breeders are reputable and all reputable breeders are good breeders. Think you may need to check the definition of reputable I think you may have misunderstood that the words of reference are "out there", and by this I refer to breeders/exhibitors that are out there the most who live in the city with a never-ending list of shows to attend and massive advertising of their achievements. I have nothing against this as it takes a huge amount of effort to get there, but it does not mean there are not other breeders that are just as reputable and good, however are just smaller and more understated. I do however wonder whether the highly competitive exhibitor does it for the breed or does it for the win. There is a big difference. I also wonder why it is that SD thinks it is ok to pick at the way I have chosen to do something and infer that I'm not a reputable breeder. Just because it is different doesn't mean it's wrong. Move onto your next thread and find someone meeker to try bully please. I have never and never will get dragged into the rude politics that go on. I am here to enjoy my dogs and to try better the breed, not to win at any cost and denigrate others' because I don't like what I've read or feel threated by the person or no longer get along with the person that bred their dog's grandsire (just an example). Due to my smile and wave approach, I have been told that I have a good attitude "that sees through their rudeness and the road blocks as you described them as generally they set out to scare off any newcomers and generally they succeed unfortunately". Useful comments please
  12. Thanks for the time it took for your help... I suppose Well I guess it is a funny thing... I am the type of person who does not do things the same as other "dog breeders". House, love and care for my dogs in my own home, Tick! Test my dogs, Tick again, as I'm doing that! Breed to improve... Tick for that one too! Show, my dogs! Tick, tick (as extra ticks are deserved for ignoring and not getting involved in some peoples BS), "Smile and wave Kimmy, Smile and Wave!". We are here to better the breed, not boost our own pockets or ego's... These ones I am definitely not guilty of! I love my dogs and I treat everyone with respect! You do not know where I am coming from, what I've done or where I want to go... Neither do you have a right to judge me without bothering to take the time to understand!? If you have zero positive input please refrain from commenting next time! PS.. Are all the out there "reputable" breeders the only good ones!?! Click goes the sound of the open can of worms...
  13. Thanks for the time it took for your help... I suppose
  14. Isn't it worth missing a show? The prog tests will not go unwasted. All the info you have on previous seasons can be useful when timing future breedings. Particularly when doing AI. It builds a picture of what your girl does that an experienced repro person can use to help you get the best outcome.. I did consider missing the show, but you're right they wont be wasted. I didn't mean to sound so negative. Is disappointing. I will keep looking for the right dog and wait for next heat, as is probably better to not have pups at Christmas time (heat/ticks etc). Things usually happen for a reason...
  15. Yeah she came on heat early and I wasn't organised enough to have a backup dog. I am searching though. Thanks, I know it's a long shot
  16. I would want to check out the dog and its lines as I'm hoping to have a show pup in the litter. Unfortunately the dog was interstate (connecting flights) and I wouldn't like to send my girl in this heat. Driving would take too long (lol, Google tells me 21 hours), don't think I'd make it back for my show this weekend. I guess I'll probably have to wait for next heat, but is a shame to waste the progesterone tests I have done this time around
  17. Hi all, I have found out this afternoon that the mini schnauzer stud dog I had lined up to receive chilled semen from is not happy with being collected. I was offered chilled or frozen so I had assumed he'd been collected before. I am now at either a crossroads, a turnaround or a blunt dead-end?!?. I am searching for semen, either chilled tomorrow or frozen might be better for hopeful more options... Is a hard fancy to crack into and even though I've been a responsible breeder for many years and an exhibitor for the last few also, I have met many roadblocks along the way? Is a shame as I am a goer and only want to help the breed!? So if you are open or know someone, please contact me :) I'm a vet nurse with good references and love my dogs. They are my extended family. However, I am quite desperate ATM as my girl was to be retired this litter as is 6yo... Cheers to any advice, Kim
  18. I'll probably get myself in trouble one day doing it, but I take all the phone number tags off these types of adverts. Is a funny society we live in that some people seem to be able to justify it to themselves, by saying they love and spoil their dogs, but still byb breed them, even after disasters like caesarean & eclampsia. I had an interesting FB coversation with my neighbour because I posted some ban BYB banners, and she breeds unregistered dogs (aka byb). Even though she was horrified when she was called a byb by a breeder/exhibitor at a local dog show (she was asking how much her pups were). On my FB post she was like a dog with a bone complaining about registered breeders doing the wrong thing and being stuck up and rude (although she did try and right this by saying "not you of course"). I eventually said "There's good and bad in all breeding, and there are plenty of pups available at the RSPCA. IMO all breeders should be doing whatever medical testing (ie patella scoring, yearly eye testing and specific dna testing for their breed/s). Every breeder, including unregistered and cross-breed oodles... Plus breed to improve the breed. You're a registered horse breeder and do testing? One bad experience with a breeder, doesn't mean you can't find many helpful ones?"
  19. Yeah I don't think the breeder was what she made herself out to be (nor are her dogs what I was lead to believe) and that is my loss (although gained a beautiful pet at any rate) it is my own fault and I fully acknowledge that. Don't be discouraged, that was sort of how I got started too. I just learnt to try to seek as much advice as I could for the breed/use I was interested in. Good luck :)
  20. Vic papers apparently take longer than nsw due to tight rules on mirochipping, etc to comply with new Companion Animals Act brought about to try and combat puppy farmers and backyard breeders. Which is a pretty good start! Why do you need the papers so quick anyhows? Some breeders I know dont sell puppies even on limited register unless buyer adheres to certain conditions and also only sell the "pick of the litter" on main register, because that is what is supposed to be done to better the breed!?
  21. I think it is a genetic trait, and it is fairly common in greyhounds. I wouldn't have a dog's canines extracted at 6 weeks, that sounds very drastic for what may end up a very minor fault. How many people do that and what breed do they do it to? I don't see how the lower teeth are 'caught behind' either. They sit behind the upper teeth in this fault, but I can't see how that would retard the growth of the jaw. Do you have any references? My reference is personal communication with David Clarke - Veterinary Dental Specialist, during my own consultations with him with one of my own dogs. Cheers, Le Hammer BVSc I agree with showdog also. Is interesting to read canine fun sports comments also, as I didn't realise undershot jaw in canines was similar to parrot mouth in horses, which is not a directly heritable defect.
  22. One thing to factor in Mumscats is that if you have any other dogs that are over the age of 8 years old alot of insurers will not cover a dog that old I'm a bit confused If you have continued insurance cover for your puppy/3yo/5yo/or from 7yo... Does his coverage stop at 8yo? Or do they not insure dogs only if you apply when he is older than 8 years old?? Thanks in advance :)
  23. Sorry, but if it was one of mine it would be PTS or micro managed. Depending on the reason for the first bite as to what course I would have taken from there. Any dog bites that a DR sees has to be reported but it is up to the person to report to council at least. Why hasn't the parents reported this dog if it has biten 2 of their children? I see no reason for the class not to read the Companion Animals act....more pet owners should We look at all the legislations to do with animals, which is what actually triggered the question. Apparently her brother was visiting their Dad and came back from there with these bite marks. Dad didn't want to report it as he knows the owner of the Rotti. The other child (my student)wasn't seriously bitten, but someone else. The sister and Mum are asking if they can report the dog?
  24. I was asked today by one of my Y12 anim studies students, "Miss, how many times does a dog have to bite someone until it is put down?" I asked a few Qs, eg. Who it bit, why and what they did about it... In the end no-one has reported the dog as the owner has convinced them not to. Rather than directing a 17 yo to read the Companion Animals Act, I thought I'd ask you guys. The dog is a large, semi-housebound, Rottweiler that has bitten her brother and left scars. She asked if she and her brother can do anything about reporting it as it has also seriously bitten someone else on the face?
  25. I have been reading some posts on here and only became a member days ago and have seen people get bombed for only half explaining things... But I can understand if there is someone behind the scenes having to worry about fakes etc. Thanks for the response and luckily I'm pretty tough skinned and will be reporting the Ahole tomorrow Sorry, Troy is not an Ahole, I'm not reporting him!! Only the aforementioned ex-employer that was the whole reason I was seeking some advice about, and will not ever be mentioned again, not that I meant to! Just hope he doesn't get any heads up just because I'm not internet savvy enough... Again, thanks talida for the google lesson
