    Deerhound

QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) i am a first time owner, but have been activly invloved with breeding and showing deerhounds for 3 years 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? the breed wa first develoved in Scotland. They are known as they royal dog of scotland as only the royal people were allowed to own them. The deehound were breed to hun Red Deer, they were sent out in teams of 2 ( 1 dog, 1 bitch). 3. How common is it in Australia? The deerhound in Australia still isjnt a common breed, they still nd always will get mixed up with irish wolfhound. Insaying that the popularity of the breed is slowly increasing (well thats what i have found anyway). 4. What is the average lifespan? The average lifspan of a Deerhound is roughly 8-10 years but can live 12+ years 5. What is the general temperament/personality? The temperament on the Deerhound is second to none! They have got just the best personality and can suit pretty much any person! they are very loyal and loving dogs! some are quite goofy and never grow up and some are just calm all the time and just want to be with you. best personality in any breed i have met. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? id say an hours walk a day would be plenty provided they can have off leash run aswell. they are happy to go for a short walk aswell as long as they are with you! 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes for sure they are! 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? yes i have seen some dogs occupy themselfs for long periods of time! 9. How much grooming is required? there isnt alot of grooming reqired. a brush once a week would be plenty as they dont drop alot of coat. obviously a bath is also needed when needed. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? young puppies can be a biot boistrous for young children, but generally they are a calm breed and are great with anyone. but like all breeds dogs nd children need to be supervised. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? No there are not any common hereditry problems associated with the deerhound, but in saying that there are certain diseases that can appear in any dog at any time that can be passed on in the lines. they are a very healthy breed!!!!!!!! 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) when buying a puppy from a responsible breeder you should ask if both parents have been heart tested (all ours are!), i owuld ask to see both parents (if both are available, i would ask how long they have been invloved in the breed for, and why they breed (these are all important for me to know if i was to buy from someone. i would ask how the puppy has been raised e.g what food they are being fed and how many tiems a day, i would sk when they had their first vaccinations adn when they were wormed last nd when they need to be wormed next.
