  1. Sorry the above was me. As mentioned I am currently dealing with a healthy red cattle dog atm. She has cancer. I want to slap the person who allowed this girl to be realeased as a potential adoption. Dogs with major health issues such as tumors should be pts. My emotion state is a bit off these days. After reading all these posts. At the end of the day, its about second chances. You might find that adoption owner thats willing to work with a dog that has major behavioural problems, but they are very few of them. In the mean time other dogs that can be helped are pts. If the carer has done everthing possible to help that dog and it hasnt worked then what other option is there? The carer keeps the dog? This is the logical part of my brain talking. The emotional side, would say something completely different. I believe thats the real problem, we love dogs.
  2. This is from this morning on Pound Rounds site. They had not met the dog. I have no words. This group is your worst nightmare and should be dragged through evey court for what they have done to rescue dogs, families, their pets and their children. "Do I look a bit fuzzy? I guess at age 84 we all get a bit fuzzy don't we dear. I hope I am not inconveniencing you too much dear but I am having a problem. I am spritely - we staffys live til we are 140 so at 84 I'm just a loving spring chicken with a bit of sunshine in my step. but here is my problem that I am hoping a few Facebook friends can help me out with. You see they are going to kill me. Now I know your Aunty melody have never been the prettiest girl at the dance and I have never been the smartest girl or the most popular, but that's because I thought all I had to be was a good dog. Somewhere along the way they changed the rules and I got downsized into a kill pound and in a couple of hours ol Aunty Melody gets jabbed with a green needle that will kill me. Aside from not knowing at all why, because I was always a good dog, I am really hoping this note reaches you in time to help me. God love you for taking time to read this and care about me. Any help you can provide would be sincerely (really really) appreciated. Warmest Regards, Aunty Melody" This was written for a 12 year old Staffy cross female this morning. She had a tumor on her leg.
  3. I have also noticed the save everything trend. The poor dog being bounced from carer to carer. I know of one dog who has been with six different carers. I have also noticed that this same trend is happening at the pounds. I currently have a greyhound with lupus that was bounced to me. I also have a little red cattle dog who was ment to be a temp to be then moved onto a permanent carer. This girl had a lump between her shoulder blades the size of a large mans fist. Why was this dog released from the pound ? There was no mention of this lump on the pound list. This girl has seperation anxiety and resourse guards as well. She resourse guards me, with 4 other dogs who demand my attention there is a lot of tension. She has also started jumping fences when put outside for 30secs. These sort of dogs are too hard to rehome Im sorry to say, and should be pts at the pound. Monday I found out she has cancer. What am I ment to do now? I have no experience with cancer and at the moment she is healthy. In a couple of months she wont be. By that time my heart will be involved. So a lot of resourses have been wasted on this one dog whos going to die anyway. So yes some dogs should be pts and not be considered for fostering. The two dogs that I mentioned came from the same pound, I will never accept a dog that has come from this pound ever. Pounds and rescue groups should be working together. Some healthy adoptable dog will be pts because this girl wasnt. .And yes I know I sound heartless but I am so bloody angry. So please forgive me. Ive been a foster carer for 10 months and yes I am learning fast. When someone mentions temp, you know their lying :-) I too am shocked at how fast some carers get their dog from pound to adoption. Most dogs in my care are with me a month, carers need this time to learn about the dog. I also have a list of things that I like my dogs to have experienced/ learnt before I even think of putting them up for adoption. As Im new to greyhounds they tend to hang around for 3 months, time to adjust to being a pet and I really enjoy having them.
  4. Isnt it the job of the foster carer to prepare the dog for their new home. I socialise mine. I have a list of what I think the dog might be exposed to and I make sure they are exposed to it. I dont have kids, so the dog will spend time with my sister who has 5 etc. I also teach some basic training. I also boot them outside during the day even if im not working that day, they might have to do it it in their new home. I do all of this before I list them up for adoption. For special needs dogs, then yes the right carer for the dog is a must but for general run of the mill dogs then no.
  5. Hi jackie and buddy I am a foster carer. I find that all my temp babies get attached to me. I find that making them survive by themselves helps them to be less attached. Being in the backyard while Im in the house. With food puzzles, cardboard boxes with food treats inside are great, appeals to their tummys and their destructive side as well. Trust me they foget all about you lol. I also do the morning doggy run and my partner does the evening. This has helped greatly. As for uncontrollable, early days stills. I recently adopted one of my foster babies, it took 6 months to understand why he was at the pound. He chews everything, including my 14yr old cattle dog, 4 day old, $140 heat pad. I currently have a rescued greyhound in foster care at the moment. She has a horrible scabbie dandruffy dry coat. I have been using omega 3 & 6 plus 9 oil in her dinner and it has worked wonders in 1.5 weeks. Its also meant to help older dogs as well. I think the brand is value, i bought it at the pet shop. Give it a try. Last but not least, your dog may just like you more. If Im any where near my cattle dog, she will ignore my partner. And he has been around 12 of her 14rs
