  1. In these situations if you really want to help it's best to give dog food/items, that way you know it's going to the actual dogs

Sure, but it was in the concrete jungle of the CBD and I don't carry doggy items on me. I wasn't expecting to see this.

I know it shocks you when you first come face to face with it but nothing is ever simple and the whole situation needs to be looked at in much greater wider detail before we start calling for them to have their animals removed. Many of them are homeless BECAUSE of their animals as they cant find animal friendly cheap accommodation and they choose to live on the street rather than abandon them

I really agree with this! I believe that for many people this would be true. A friend of mine recently lost her job, and then her house, and she decided she would rather live on the streets than go into shelters or departmental housing where she would she would be forced to live without her animals, and have them surrended. Thankfully, her family helped her, and she now lives happily with an Aunt and her three dogs... but for many there is no option. I know personally, I would never be torn from my dogs no matter what! Sometimes life hands you some awful choices and I am glad that there is an organisation like yours around to help. I am now on your website and am considering how I can help by volunteering.

  3. Hi, Im wondering if anyone could tell me what the breed numbers are for this show on Sat/Sun

    In particular

    CKCS

    Labrador Retriever

    Lhasa Apso

    Tibetan Spaniels

    Italian Greyhounds

    Bichon's

    Yorkies

    Shelties

    Shih Tzu

    and Border Collies

Before anyone thinks that I am a massive puppy farmer with so many dog breeds that i couldn't move in my home without bumping into a dog, it is not just for me, but also a couple of friends that are all curious.

Thanks, in advance, and Good Luck to all competitors at the shows over the weekend. Will be down there Sat, to watch, but still curious about Sunday as well.

  4. As someone suggested, I think that the OP is doing this so they can register the dog for cheaper with the council. In our council area, there is a difference in price between desexed and non-desexed animals. Purebred dogs that are not desexed, are charged the same rate as a normal desexed pet if they belong to a member of the State Canine Authority (ie Dogs SA) as they are involved in registered dog events and breeding. I think the thinking is that if they do not belong to a registered breeder, and are not involved in conformation, then you pay for the priveledge of an undesexed dog. I suppose it is there as a deterent to backyard breeders, and puppy farmers.

Im not sure if this is the same situation, but if it is it seems a bit wrong, that even though the dog is question is not directly involved with any 'purebreed' dog events and the dog is ten years old and they do not even have the original pedigree that they are allowed to get a discount.

This dog is a pet, and if it is not desexed, then they should have to pay the full fee. If they are searching for the original breeder for interest's sake that's fine, but if it's to potentially cut corners on a benefit that pure breed dog owners have fought long and hard for then it's wrong.

  5. Does anyone have a ring map for Castle Hill.

Where do you go to get to the dog rings once you get to the showground turn off near the council buildings ... please help DOLers! im feeling a bit lost!

Does anyone have breed numbers for the shows this weekend?

  6. I agree with the statements above, I would not enter under my breeder, or even at a show she was attending. Too much risk of controversy if my dogs go up, even if there was no reason for it.

I would feel wrong doing it as well, and it puts the breeder of the dogs in an awkward position. Really if you are showing her dogs under her, then she would have to put you up, otherwise what is that saying about her own breeding.

  7. Like!

I really enjoy the Temora shows usually, it is a great weekend away, it is a shame that the piggybank is so empty and we will have to give them a miss.

Hope all who attend have a great weekend, and great successes...

  8. As far as I know this is a recognized breed but not in Australia.

Mistress Google tells me that the breed is recognized by the NKC, UKC, ABRA and the American Bulldog Association (ABA) and the SACBR (South Africa)

    They are a magnificent dog.

So none of the internationally recognised registries. Anyone can set up and call themselves a registry but if it is not recognised by the KC, AKC, ANKC and FCI, it doesn't mean anything.

Agreed, only recognised by 'made up' registries. This is where people get manipulated by confusion

  9. I think either a Cav or a Tibbie.

Yes the Cav's shed, but if you brush the dead hair out each day its not really that bad. But remember they have more spaniel than toy in them sometimes, but they are so biddable, they are easy to live with, easy to train, and easy to groom.

Tibbies can be a bit headstrong in training, and are essentially a small watch dog, but if your parent's have the time to train them appropriately then they can be soooo loyal, and sooo sooky, plus keep you entertained with thier antics.

You said that your parents wouldn't appreciate cat-like behaviour such as jumping on furniture. Tibbies are climbers, but then again so is our Cav, he can climb a 5 foot pool fence. Plus they do jump on the lounge, especially when playing.

But either of these two would suit your requirements, but I think a clipped Bichon would be perfect as well!

  10. Hi Everyone,

I will be getting another puppy,a Cane corso.

The problems I'm facing is; dogs that are neutered will there physical apearance change? muscle loss etc.

    Reduce Life Span?

Reason I'm getting the dog is for family pet and personal home protection.

Having browsed the net for a while,I havn't really found a straight forward answer.

I have been thinking to get him entire or neutered?.

If you do not plan to breed him, and are not an ANKC registered breeder, then neuter him. There is alot of info out there that is confusing and contradictory, but you might just save his life in the long run. Desexing males has shown to reduce thier risk of prostate cancer, plus the behavioural benefits to you and your family are good as well. You don't know it yet, but you have opened a can of worms on this subject, and will probably get even more confused before the end of the thread.

  11. I am glad to hear others thing what the breeder is doing is wrong. I certainly do!

The fact that she would not hold only to the puppy until the condition is cleared I think speaks volumes. I would have thought this is what any responsible breeder would do!

I understand deposits can be non refundable, however I did not think this was the case if it is not as per the original agreement being a healthy puppy. For example if you put a deposit on the car and in that time they dinged it, they would have to fix it or give the money back. as you can't fix thins health condition this only leaves one option.

I have told them even of they get the deposit back they still need to report it to dogs qld.

It is most definately wrong, and behaviour such as this is disgusting, reprehensible, and makes me SOOO angry. It paints all registered breeder's the wrong way.

  12. Contact the kennel control, but in most cases they will not get involved in personal disputes, but still let the state controllng body aware of the breeder.

If, all further claims to the deposit are refused, all you can do is NAME AND SHAME.

  13. When I say qualified I'm thinking someone who is qualified by and accredited by a group to be able to provide training to a puppy - with some kind of base lines and at least minimal qualifications to start the basics at a minimum.

I'm not talking about just meet and greet type things where the general aim is to socialise the pup.

lets not consider demographics or what families want or ordinarily do or costs etc for the purposes of this poll - I'm interested in what you guys would choose as to what you believe is best for the dogs if all things are equal and ideal.

Do you mean someone who is qualified and accredited by the MDBA? are you guys thinking of starting training courses?

I think, most of the ones the vet's run at 8 weeks old are a complete and utter waste of money. So I would not be basing it on that for sure. The problem with most of them is one, the people who run them have varying levels of qualifications, and enthusiasm relating to the course, and the other is the actual content of the programs.

But I think COST is a large factor in whether people continue for longer, rather than the content of the course.

If people feel they are being ripped off, or not getting value for money they will not continue to shell out more money, as someone above stated. And of course the longer the course the more money they are going to spend, so trained people are a must to get results.

I think twice a week is better, but then again I don't think many families would have the time to spare that often for formal training. I think the longer the course the better as well, but then you run into that commitment issue as well.

  14. I wish they wouldn't do that. I know two people who wanted to enter, but didn't realise until the day before entries closed, so didn't send thier entries off because of the deadline stuff on the ad, and now we find out she's still accepting them up to yesterday.

She should of stuck to her guns, and sent all those who were late thier entries back - but of course then that's less entries isn't it?
