  1. We're with RSPCA insurance and I think that's around $40 a month. What a Dane eats is a very individual thing. Anything from say a couple of cups of kibble to 9 cups of kibble. A growing Dane will eat alot where-as an older not so active Dane won't consume as much. A 20 kg bag would probably last 2-3 weeks for an adult. As I said, I am not getting a Dane yet. I was only saying a have a chi and a boxer currently so people would know what breeds i have :) As for adopting, i love all the colours so I definitely don't have my eyes solely set on a blue. If the right Dane was up for adoption at the right time then i would def want to go down that path as im very pro rescue! Thanks for the insurance and food info, its good to start getting rough figures before making such a GREAT (lol) commitment.
  2. Thank you (your DP pic is gorgeous by the way)
  3. I would have a long, hard think if these two breeds are really a good match. Just a swipe of the paw from a Dane could badly injure a Chi. I'm not saying it can't work but it is a lot of work and separating. I have a giant dog (60kgs+) and a Pug (6kgs) who is small for his size, I am lucky that the large dog is very docile and spends most of his time sleeping. If he was hyper and zoomed around it would be fraught with danger IMO. Thanks Clyde, I am not getting a Dane just yet...because I've never had a giant breed I want to do as much research as possible
  4. Try spraying the yard with Malawash. Years ago the land behind my parents house stated to be built on which in turn gave them a crazy flea problem...you would walk out onto their patio and literally within seconds would have fleas all the way up your legs! My dad would spray every other day and in about 1.5 weeks there were no more fleas - this was done in conjunciton with a spot on treatment too
  5. Am I allowed to bump this? Just interested in my last post being answered please :)
  6. Sorry, I was dragged 30cm not metres. So collars are more effective than harnesses you think? (honest question), when I used to use them I felt like I had less control when they were on collars than now that they're in harnesses. And also, I didn't allow my dog offleash - he slipped out of his harness. Obviously because it wasn't tight enough. But I understand what you are saying and will try the pop technique next time. Thank you :) Have you tried using head haltis? If they're wearing harnesses they can use their whole body strength to pull you
  7. I was lying on the ground when my GSD walked over and stood above me, i saw something stuck in the roof of his mouth (later identified as bamboo). So i tried to get it out and it the process he headbutted me and broke both my front teeth!
  8. My boxer was licking/pushing his stainless steel bowl off whatever we'd put it on....until we used a tatty old crate! Because the edges are a tiny bit raised, it's enough to keep the bowl on there as it has a thin lip around the bottom of the bowl - cheapest solution ever! We had tried the one that is a stand with 2 bowl holders, but it moved around too much and he got a bit spooked by that
  9. Another couple of things I'm wondering are: who has pet insurance in QLD and roughly what would it cost to insure a Dane? Obviously they eat a crap load of food (which is fine as I'm prepared to be spending a lot more than I am now). For example, how long roughly would a 20k bag last an adult male?
  10. I have thought about adopting, i have been looking at the Great Dane Rescue and Rehoming website. If I could have one now I'd adpot "Blue" in a heartbeat as he's exactly what I want!
  11. I will still definitely do that, thanks
  12. Oh I hope that's not the same in QLD. I'm already pretty sure which breeder im going with, they're listed on the DOL page so i figure they must be good! I'm loving reading up on GD's, I wish i could get one right this second but i have to wait a bit longer until it's practical
  13. I was actually looking at your website yesterday! So many adorable babies to adopt!
  14. Thank you, I have been looking in these
  15. Hi guys & gals I currently own a chihuahua and a boxer but have always dreamed of having a GD. In the next 1-2 years I plan on achieving that dream! I have been doing lots of research but want people's personal opinions on the breed, temperament, feeding regime, very likely health issues (I know they're referred to as the "heartbreak dog"). Just anything anyone with Dane experience would like to add would be wonderful - I want to be over educated on this beautiful breed before making the final commitment. Thanks in advance :)
  16. We went back to the vet and it's definitely not any of the above suggestions. It's so weird that only 2 of the 5 dogs have it and all but one sleep together every night and are together all day. We are switching to a hollistic food to see if that helps - the vet still thinks its an allergy to something...poor babies
  17. Thanks guys, i'll look further into your suggestions. We thought it might have been their dry food so we've just changed that
  18. I don't think it's ringworm but I guess it could be...maybe the obvious has been missed? Wouldn't my other 3 dogs have it by now as these 2 have had it for over a month...I thought it was highly contagious?
  19. Hi everyone! 2 of my 5 dogs have developed a strange skin issue. First let me just say, they have been to our vet a couple of times & we are slowly trying to work out what is causing the alleged allergy. They are not itchy, nor is the skin looking red or irritated. They have tiny, I'm talking smaller than your pinky nail, dry areas. One they appear more on his sides, the other is towards his tail & back legs. In some places where it's extra dry, tiny clumps of hair fall out. There are zero fleas (my girl is allergic so I'm very strict on keeping fleas at bay) and they get fed excellent food. I guess my question is, has anyone seen this?
