  1. 47 years ago when I was 10 and absolutely desperate for a dog, my aunty surprised me with a black poodle for my birthday, 3/4 poodle 1/4 terrier. I cried my eyes out when she handed me him. He had the most perfect laid back nature and did the poodle whale eyes most beautifully.  Snoopy and I went everywhere together and he even went on my first date with me and my now husband. Love me love my dog!

  2. When we weaned our adult dogs from sleeping on my son's bed to sleeping in their own beds in their own room (3 was too many on his bed!) I spent a long time sitting on the floor in the study cuddling and petting them on their beds until they went to sleep. We all enjoyed our long night time cuddles and now they go to bed happily, though they are whinging at us at 6am to let them in and on our bed which is our usual routine.

  3. Dogs take a LOT of work and a LOT of your time to become a well behaved member of your family. If you cannot put in a lot of time training and bonding with your dog, especially at the beginning, your dog may become a nuisance to have around.  MOST IMPORTANTLY you need to be able to TEACH your child how to behave around dogs, to be gentle and respectful of the dog. Children love helping with the training of the dog and your shared input teaches the child compassion and responsibility. Please do not think that by saving a dog it's going to be grateful but think how can you make the dogs life happy with you and what you need to do to achieve that.  Dogs are not going to be happy left alone all day and the way they entertain themselves is usually destroying things because they are bored. Having a dog as an important Family member is fun! And it's enjoyable having it as part of your family, not left to its own devices. I don't know any dogs who are happy to be left all day, entertain themselves and not need their owners attention.

  4. Could it be something like a wasp sting or prickle that he's eaten? Lump, drooling, sore to eat, sneezing... I'd be sending him in for a general anaesthetic so they can check him out thoroughly and get to the bottom of it. Cheer up, I'm sure he'll be fine, you are looking after him very well...

  5. I'd be having a chat with the breeder to see if this is normal behavior for this dog. If it's not normal, I'd consider sending her back poor little thing, if that's an option. It does sound as though she has definite anxiety issues and maybe a vet would be best placed to help there.

  6. Hi cavmad, sorry to hear your boy is not doing so well. The head shakes sound neurological. Take him to the vet as he may need to start some pain relief for the arthritis as well. I've always included the kids, depending on their age, in the care of our dogs. This is where you show your daughter how to care and look after others and the elderly, an important part of life looking after a much loved family member. Hope it all goes well.

  7. Swf 13yo diagnosed with grade 4 heart murmur, vet says she needs half her teeth removed. She is extremely skinny, all ribs and backbone showing, extremely narrow at waist when viewed from above. Someone made the comment that it may be in the dogs best interest to not operate on her teeth due to the risk. What are your thoughts? She is getting good quality soft food now but can't say how well or otherwise she was fed prior to this week. Vet didn't mention anything about her lack of weight. She has just come into our care. Bloods show slight kidney disease?

  8. We put our westie on Hills sensitive skin dry food when he started on his feet. It has helped him a lot along with washing his feet in malaseb. Alternatively you could put her on a completely raw diet such as the barf patties which are a complete diet and stay away from anything processed. If she's been having cans there would be a lot of processed stuff and goodness knows what in them!

  9. Totally get this, they do like to manipulate us ☺ one of mine looks like she's being murdered when we send her to bed (off my bed and into the study). Though when she is really tired, all she wants is to go to her bed alone in the study. Its her safe place ☺

    Not necessarily.

My dog used to wake up to any little sound and pace at night because he had undiagnosed and untreated Generalised Anxiety Disorder. He was unable to sleep / sleep soundly due to the extent of his anxiety. Now that he is on medication and less anxious he can sleep through, apart from needing a toilet break on the odd occasion.

Other dogs can wake up at night and pace and bark due to Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (Dementia).

Or they may get up due to an illness increasing their need to pee, perhaps as a result of increasing their water intake. something else increasing how often the dog needs to go out.

By all means look at what other things you can do (i.e. do you feed a salty treat before bed that increases water intake then increases need to pee? Does the dog need a quieter place to sleep so as not to be woken as easily?), but a vet check would be wise.

A vet check is an excellent idea of course, though because this dog can sleep for 8 nights in a row in the laundry without having an accident, there may be some level of comfort there.
