  1. I'm not an expert but that sounds like quite a lot to me for a 4 month old? Especially if she's on leash so has to keep running at a certain pace to keep up with you or a bike. I thought the rule of thumb for walks was around 5 mins per each month of age - so maybe you could do 20 mins or so morning and afternoon, and take it slowly with the cycling. I don't know kelpies at all though, so maybe this doesn't apply... I know hence the question!! Obviously, I wouldn't do that if it wasn't good for her, it's what I would like to do eventually though, and was wondering just how much a kelpie pup actually can cope with. I just don't know how early to start that!
  2. Thanks guys, I am unsure of type she is, she is a rescue puppy. I plan on taking her (if it all works out and I can adopt her) for a run for at least 30-40 minutes every morning (if not a run then at least a long walk), cycling on weekends and walking every afternoon. Don't worry I know how much they need, I was just not sure how early I could start doing all that. It's been awhile since I have had a puppy that wasn't a giant breed! Oh and will be taking her to obedience training, and hope to get into agility when she is old enough.
  3. Hi, we are looking at getting a 4 month old Kelpie puppy. Just curious as to how much exercise should they get? Our last dog was a giant breed who you had to be careful about running/jumping etc under 12 months. Are kelpies the same or can they be a bit more vigorous? It's been awhile since I had a puppy! Cheers
  4. Okay, just over a month ago, I put up a post asking about Body Corporate Laws in the ACT. My Mum & Dad bought a townhouse and found out from one of the tenants that dogs weren't allowed. They spoke to their neighbour who then said that as long as the dog was quiet, it wouldn't be an issue. Since then (well only a few days later) my Dad passed away. So it is now more important than ever that Mum gets to keep her dog obviously. She moved in on Monday, and had her dog at the kennel for a few nights while she settled in. She got him back last night. Apparently he barked a few times at people walking past in the street during the night, she shut all the doors, and windows, and he was okayish after that, but understandably, she doesn't want him to continue barking. I think its just that he is not used to the noise, they used to live in a quiet street, and that he picked up on her anxiousness and so was probably being a bit overprotective. But still, it's not okay for him to bark at all. So, can anyone recommend a good trainer in Canberra to help her? She can lock him in the laundry at night, but would prefer not to. He doesn't bark when people come to the door, it's only when people make noise at night, which is not acceptable really! But obviously since Dad has gone, she really will rely on her dog for company, so it's really important that she can train him out of it.. Cheers for any advice you can give us..
