  1. The kids are 9 & 11, and the other dogs walks on a lead very well. Over the past week she has settled down somewhat and is less terrified by everything she encounters. Distant barking dogs do not freak her out anymore and she has eased up on pulling/running at full speed. We have shortened the duration of walks and try to take the edge off her energy with some ball play at home before the walk. She is a delightful puppy and settling down nicely. Maybe my expectations of her have been a bit high
  2. She is doing really very well. Growing fast and getting used to life in our family. Thanks again for all the supportive advice and suggestions.
  3. Thanks, I will look into the Canine Behavioural School, but as classes are only on Monday nights, it will be difficult for me to attend We are progressing well with calm management and the Behaviour Interrupter program. She really is a lovely thing and we are coaching the children to maintain calm rather than the usual excitability people use around puppies. I really appreciate all the responses.
  4. Thank you Steve. The Behavioural Interrupter looks like the sort of thing we can use. I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm to share their points of view.
  5. Thanks for all the advice. I have tried the Triangle of Temptation once, but she protested at the tie out so much that she hurt herself so I bailed Nekhbet, I think the NILIF program is good, it is not about being harsh. I also do not believe that the CM methods are harsh. We are very calm and consistent with her. It is as much as about training the children as the puppy in many instances. I am trying to implement methods that will see her seeking connection with us.
  6. We are maintaining boundaries and trying to use non-verbal cues. We also have two children who say her name and No several hundred times a day. It is not that she is badly behaved or aggressive so touches are not really necessary. The other dog is quite dominant (we inherited him about 7 months ago) and needs very strong limitations.
  7. She is slowly getting the hang of looking at me for food using a single treat in my hand to reward for eye contact. I am finding it difficult to attract her attention for anything else including coming when called or even for her to sit before we open the door for her. She does look to the other dog more frequently to see what he does. I am sure she only sits before her meal because the older dog does!
  8. We are using the NILIF and Cesar Millan methods with our 11 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback. She is very reluctant to make eye contact for permission and doesn't seem to get the connection to the reward when she does. I would like some more information about implementing training with a pup, as much of the information I can find seems to be focused on older dogs. Or am I expecting too much?
  9. We have an eleven week old Rhodesian Ridgeback. We got her at 8 weeks and have been walking her daily with our 10 year old Jack Russell cross. The intention being to assimilate them (the JR is not impressed with a puppy in the house) and wear her out a bit so she is not so boisterous with the children and older dog. She has never been thrilled about the walk, but has recently become terrified by it. I understand that she is probably in a fear phase but am unsure of how to manage it. Do we skip her walks for a while? Or is it best to just power through? I don't want to make walking a bad experience for her but need to reduce some of her energy.
  10. Gorgeous. We are picking up our little girl RR on Saturday! Any tips?
  11. Hi, We are collecting our new puppy in 10 days. She is a female Rhodesian Ridgeback who will be 8 weeks old. I have been doing lots of reading and online research to make her transition to our family as easy as possible. We also have a 10 year old Parson Jack Russell. He is well behaved, but not exactly what I would call trained. We inherited him from a family member 6 months ago. I have read Ian Dunbar's Before and After you get your puppy books, and K9Pro's training advice which all sounds great. But I have not been able to find much information about bringing the pup and older dog together, advice about coaching the older dog or at what point I might be able to leave them together in the yard. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.
