  1. great thats all Ive written exactly what I do and have done for years walk past be it with a various dogs over the years. I don"t even know what breed of dogs they are .To me they are just med size plain brown dogs .The first time I met their owner was to ask where they bought this awesome waterproof stunning collar their dog was wearing . The house is set back from the road with a scrap car yard behind them .The dogs don"t even bark .Im not sure wether my statement will help I guess the dog assessment will be his biggest thing . :D
  2. I"ll be the first to raise my hand and bow down to the great work rescuers do. Randomly today not sure exactly why I checked out the rescue directory list (just in nsw) on pet rescue .Over the years Ive heard names and so knew of some of them but I never realised just how many there are now. Do you think people see that as a good sign their dog/cat will be rescued so aren"t AS worried about surrending him/her or feel less guilt when taking them to the pound? Baring in mind these people have limited idea how whats really involved being a rescue group but simply see it as ----THERES ENOUGH OF THEM (rescue groups) OUT THERE
  3. Ive lived in my street for almost 10 years. For the past 4 years or so Ive walked past the same 2 dogs at least 4 times a day (on a school day) Ive walked past walking 4 dogs the foxies barking at the two bigger dogs and NOT once have these two dogs barked back tried to tear through the gate or made me feel threatened in any way . As a foster carer Ive walked all sorts of dogs past these two dogs and NOT once has there been any sort of reaction. Ive been warned from strangers telling me there are big dogs who live down there and I should be careful -----( Its light industrial where I am so at times theres workers etc ) Today their owner told me one of the dogs has been slapped with a dangerous dog order as council told the owner she jumped the fence and attacked someones dog .He has 7 days to contest the order so has a dog behourist coming to access his dog today . He asked me if I would write a statement . His neighbour who does pet boarding is also writing a statement I said yes. .OF COURSE my statement only states what I KNOW and what Ive seen over the years But now Im worried about any backlash from the person who went to council in the first place I NEVER saw the attack and my statement contains only what extends to me and what Ive seen over the years of walking past . While I understand any dog can do anything I stuck to what I do know and have seen . Has anyone else been in this situation ? Im not worried about my statement as its all true and Im not worried about the dog as its never posed any threat to me my kids or my dogs in fact Ive never seen it out of the yard other than on a lead being walked by its owner BUT IF it is true I do also feel for the owner of the other dog and the lenghts he/she may go to to fight for their dog ---Does that make sense ?
  4. Exactly Ive noticed one group use the pound photo on pet rescue for a long time and nots are used on their FB page They have done it for a very long time and are heavy uses of kennels which dare I say gets me rather upset .It can take some time to get to know a pound dog out of the pound enviroment and longer if they are solely in kennels .I OFTEN thought ""well the dog is in care why keep using their pound photo?"" In this case I don"t think being busy is any form of excuse as SURELY they would be spending time with the dog so a photo op would be part and parcel --To me anyway .... For any link Ive ever used to promote awareness for a dog I always add that I have never personally met the dog and to always check for themselves . Thankyou for the help I know now I can use the notes/photos if needed and I will always highlight your suggestions :D
  5. I often browse through the urgent list and while it varies some of the photos and notes are so well done. :D Are they copyrighted? Ive noticed they are used by rescue group on both their pet rescue account and facebook page . EVEN though it wasn"t them who did the profile but they had the dog released and its now in their care......For me while it may have been ok at first I would have thought whoever then has the dog they would have to make their own notes and photos ? Ive often seen a dog I felt I would like to promote but wasn"t sure if I could using their notes posted here provide a link to the pound or write my own plug ? I guess the obvious answer would be to contact them directly but just in case someone else was unsure I thought Id ask openly ..... :)
  6. jUST WONDERING DO YOU HAVE A blacklist? (SO TO SPEAK) And if so do you share it amongest yourselves? I kept some names over the years
  7. To be honest Ive never kept a list of costs incurred as a foster carer .Toys here new collars there a bag of chicken wings every pay day .I know its all add up but most of us don"t normally think twice and spending a little here and there never seemed to matter. Ive heard and read here some of the bills rescue groups have had enough to have you eating 2 minute noodles for a week ( I mean that in a nice way :) ) Ive also seen alot of new groups pop up some stay some go . For anyone thinking of starting what would you say they would be looking at cost wise ? just for the start up without even a first visit to the vet . Assuming you even had a good rate vet you could judge the vet bill but sometimes things don"t go straight forward so you would need I suspect a kitty for those unexpected costs . Im not asking for exact $$$$$ but I thought maybe if some people had an idea they may do some extra homework. Honestly Im old school so wouldn"t rely on donations IF I were a rescuer I think I would ask if I really needed to and accept any given but I wouldn"t ask for EVERYTHING so I bet Id be heavily in debt :D I also gather it would vary depending on if you took a certain breed/age puppies would need heaps by way of extra vaccinations worming etc and I guess on the flip side the older dogs may need extra dental or tests So while I know you can"t give exact figures I was thinking your experience may help any even your budgeting tips may help those already involved Either way I thought it could be an interesting subject and could even be a real eye opener to those not involved Edited to add while I would love to be involved there would be no way emotionally nor money wise could I ever do what you rescuers do so Im just a carer
  8. I don"t support puppy farms and promote pound dogs and rescue whenever I can BUT I also understand people want a pure bred .There could be many reasons anything from knowing the size they will become to their gentics to temp and I don"t see anything wrong with someone going to a breeder . I guess its their choice of breeder that is the question. I looked at that facebook attachment posted here and it really did play on my mind owning a pound dog myself I know its not all roses but those photos really were aimed to hit you. I don"t think by someone going to a breeder simply means a shelter dog will die thats a bold and broad statement .While there are many dogs in pounds it doesn"t mean they are suitable for that one family looking on that day or even week . I don"t know much about the whole OL thing I do know its taken off and become huge .In many ways I feel sorry for the decent rego breeders out there because to me it always comes across by these groups that you too are no better than the puppy farms .So I guess to someone who didn"t know or didn"t look into it you also get a bad wrap . People are always afraid of what they don"t fully understand and of course there will always be those who jump on any band wagon, Im still learning and reading up on things and looking into how things work .I never went in for the whole OL thing because I didn"t understand what it was really all about at first I thought it was just about puppy farms but then it got all twisted and he said she said .Honestly it made me feel if I didn"t agree with it then I didn"t care but thats not true I do care but somewhere in it all I got lost
  9. I am not sure why anyone would have antibiotic supplies to use off their own bat, but please do not use prescription medication on any dog without veterinary advice. This is coming from someone who is currently trying to manage a dog with a severe drug induced skin disease caused by prescribed cephalosporin. Antibiotics should never be given without careful consideration and testing for sensitivities. It's a concern that vets often hand them out just in case, and even more of a concern that members of the general public have their own supplies to use whenever they THINK they are needed and without vet advice. In rescue you have them because exactly as KelpieCuddles said, animals die or drug regimens change. You learn not to throw things out, keep them until they expire, if a future dog is prescribed them at a consult it can reduce the extra amount dispensed. I've never had a vet tell me to muck around with meds at home. & I've never had a vet give me excess to requirements, in rescue that's just a waste of money. It is stupid and irresponsible to diagnose when you're not qualified, but having spare meds is part and parcel of foster care. OP simply stated she would see the vet and already had antibiotics. Not that she intended to google-diagnose and google-medicate. THANKYOU powerlegs here is an exampple ---I had a dog who vet suggested he be sedated after desexing to help him as he was big powerful and wouldn"t stay still for more than 5 minutes They gave me a script 12 x Acp 25mg tablets x 500 instructions were Give 1/2 to 1 tablet twice daily as Necessary to sedate will last 2-4 hours WELL I only used 1 tablet now I have 11 left over still in script bag with complete instructions and the date etc ..It is quite easy to have something left over AND as I said I was taking a list of what I had with me to the vet IF I had the right tablets then I wouldn"t need to double up or as you said F in rescue thats just a waste of money .........BUT do you know what has me so upset? I wrote an honest thing about a problem with my dog I wrote it here asking for help from people I thought would maybe able to give me advice instead Its been taken away from what I was seeking and turned into something completely different I don"t think that was very helpful nor fair .would you rather me lie give you half the story or not even bother turning to people I thought were here as part of a dog community .I don"t know anyone from a bar of soap I wasn"t expecting to be grilled I was simply concerned about my dog before I took him to the vet . BY the way the lump went down over night
  10. After treating an injury my dog had then calling the after hours vet I had explained what I done over the phone The vet then quoted I had done everything right and exactly what they would have done ...Which made me feel proud of myself some on that day I was far from the title but felt like a vet :D
  11. So vets just give them to you without a script?? NO my rescuer did as too where she bought them from ????? and really not the topic I was just being honest about everything so if anyone had some thoughts about my dogs lump they had the facts Im sorry but thats what I was asking about thinking you all have had experience and may be able to give advice I wasnt looking to change the subject begin a different one or get anyone in trouble
  12. How come you have plenty of antibiotics? and how do you know you have the right one to treat the offending bug IF it is an infection? Having said that, it sounds like a haematoma and will probably reabsorb given time. Still needs a vet assessment though Im a foster carer so I have a range of antibiotics mange treatments etc plus a well stocked first aid kit Using the right one will depend on which one the vet tells me to use I will give him a list of the meds I have I won"t just pill pop him :) Ive seen some things treated some wounds however this one hasn"t come up (no pun intended)
  13. just did a measure 5cm long 2 cm wide its gone down since yesterday ......... I did look it up and it said a vet will need to drain it so looks like a vet trip I have plenty of antibiotics here so thats covered :) Thankfully its not a major thing . Since he"s a bit of a sook I reckon he will play on it AFTER the vet :D all his vaccinations are up to date ...I thought at first it may have been a bee sting as we have stupid palms that flower and the bee"s go nuts sadly because we rent my request to have them removed was denied ----don"t even get me started about their leaves the seed pods etc
  14. Our 18 moth old jack russell x foxy has a large lump on his neck . The lump appeared out of the blue no pain when touched or lightly squeezed It is firm to touch but moves around under the skin He doesn"t seem to know its there He doesn"t scratch it eating as per normal Hasn"t slowed him down any No visable marks no break in the skin While I know most people would have me high tailing it to vet and of course I would had he been in pain etc But as my vet likes to charge and preform every test under the sun I thought at least if I had some form of idea I wouldn"t be a sucker for un-necessary tests
  15. I do hope they are ok and nothing too serious .Exposure is exposure as long as people are aware of them (the dogs) its all good I only know whats been written here I"ll do a google search and have a look Thanks
