  1. I also used Phil for my last litter with semen that was not very good so we used all we had. We got 8 pups. If the mating is super important as it was for me ( the only remaining semen left in the world from this dog) I was happy to pay whatever to whoever was the best to increase my chance of pups. And Phil was the best according to everyone I spoke to. He was excellent to deal with and I loved that he explains everything fully and so you understand it all too.
  2. They're in Hobart, but I'm sure they would travel for the right vet. Having said that I have no idea how big Tassie really is lol.
  3. I sold a Bullmastiff puppy to a home in Tassie. A few months back they contacted me and told me their vet had told them he had hip dysplasia. He was only about 12 mths. Vets do this all the time so I told them not to panic. Vet reckoned he could tell from looking at him but they did take X-rays and decided from those he did. I told her again not to panic and to send them off to Lavelle for scoring. She did and they came back a 12, which is great! The breed average is 22.6. So everything is all well until I receive a call two nights ago saying their vet wants to do a total hip replacement. Now they have sent me a video of him walking and there is something going on with his left hind but myself and those I've shown it to don't believe it's a hip issue, it looks more in the hock. No other diagnostics have been undertaken, no other X-rays of spine, or further down the leg, no visit to a chiropractor, nothing, so I'm not happy the vet has decided a total hip replacement is neccessary considering nothing else has been ruled out and his scores were good. So my question is, is there somewhere highly recommended in Tassie I can send them for a second opinion. Cheers, KM

  5. Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been back before now. I took him to the vet who referred me to a specialist. The specialist was thinking it may be infraspinatus tendon contracture or the bicep tendon. She couldnt do any diagnostics on the day but is pushing for an mri at about $2000 or athroscopy at $3500-$4000. I simply dont have that money at the moment. She said there were other things we could do but they might not show anything and then Id have to do the more expensive anyway. I asked about ultrasound but apparently the person that does it at the clinic has not done enough in that area to be confident enough to do it. Apparently its a very tricky area and hard to get around it, so the specialist is really pushing for the MRI. The good news is she doesn't think hes in pain so suggested I wait and save up the money. Not sure what to do, whether its worth finding someone who is experienced enough to do the ultrasound or if Id just be wasting my money, which I dont really have to begin with lol. Has anyone had any experience with something like this before?
  6. My young Bullmastiff boy has been lame for quite some time, front left. I have crate rested initially when I had time off work and it improved but then got worse again. I had his hips and elbows xrayed and asked them to check his shoulder as well, all clear, but the vet said when he was under and on his back his shoulder dropped considerably compared to the other one, which indicated it may be a torn muscle. He suggested more resting but to take him back if it doesnt improve. Admittedly, he has only been penned, either outside or inside with me, so he is not running around and playing with the other dogs, however I have not crated him (except over night). I hate doing it, especially while Im at work all day and to make it worse I have no air con inside. But Im resigned to the fact that Im going to have to. I have the Bullmastiff Specialty coming up in May ( which I understand he may not have recovered fully by then) and also the Nationals in June, which of course Id like to show him at. Is there anything I can give him to aid in muscle recovery whilst he is crated and would taking him to a physio or bowen therapist be beneficial at this stage? If so, can anyone recommend one in QLD. Cheers,KM
  7. Well Chases testes semi to be firmer, but not bigger. And tonight he actually mounted my girl who is in season, only early in, but it was very out of the ordinary for him so It sounds like it's finally starting to wear off. I've noticed he is a bit more testy to, not as chilled as he normally is. Fingers crossed his medical problem does not return! It's been almost 2.5 years since it was put in.
  8. It's now been 2 years and 2 months post implant and STILL hasn't worn off!!!
  9. I have Bullmastiffs, I believe my dogs would bark but they are not approach type of dogs. They would bark, keeping their distance but circling, basically trying to keep the person back, but without forcing the issue. I believe they would all be the same if alone except for maybe my old girl, she mightnt be so forceful. My dogs do the same thing if I am home unless Im there with them (as in greet the person coming in) and then they relax a little but are still a bit wary except for Chase, who thinks since im there they must be ok, so he'll volunteer himself for pats. If it was night time or something or the person appeared dodgy then they wouldnt be ok with it, they'd be going off. If someone got physically confrontational I think my dogs would be more forceful with their behavior and possibly "rush" the person, growling and snarling, trying to force them away. I dont think they would bite but you never know, they are not the sort of breed to bite now ask questions later, I think it would take a lot for a Bullmastiff to bite, they would rather use otherways to defend first before resorting to biting.
  10. Im another who has had problems with check chains. One being a GSD years ago before I knew better, he was on the veranda and it dangled down between the boards and he got stuck there. Thankfully I found him and he was ok. Second problem, I was a at a dog show with my two pups, whislt also handling for someone else. After my pups had been in it was a rush to get them i their crate so I can handle another dog. Chucked them both in th crate together with chains still on. In the ring with the other dog and all hell broke loose, with dogs screaming and so forth. Sure enough they had been playing and one had the chain wrapped around her lower jaw and was stuck. I couldnt get them apart as they were panicking and pulling which pulled the chain tighter. Thankfully they came apart at some point. Have never left dogs with chains on ever again, not even for a quick minute at a show.
  11. My beautiful girl Kalais is gone. On Wednesday she was ok, but I knew she didnt have long, I initially thought maybe a week, but then realised probably not even that long and I didnt want her to get to the point she was in pain. I had an appointment for 11.20 this morning but she went down hill so fast overnight I couldn't let her go another minute and so she was given her wings at 8 this morning. Last night we went to the beach for a short stroll, she had a warm hydrobath, then went to say goodbye to the kids where she rolled around on her back and wagged her tail, she had double beef and bacon burger, a cheeseburger, and some fries topped off with a choc sundae for dessert, which all went down a treat with great gusto, I could never imagine her going off her food, I think she lived for her food. The laboured breathing is so much more noticeable at night, and she alternated from my bed to the floor. But this morning it was obvious she was uncomfortable and in pain, she wouldn't/ couldn't get on the bed and when I offered her a bowl of milk she didn't touch it, something I thought I would never see. I forgot about the fact I was going to lose her forever and it became a race to end her pain because I couldn't bear to see her like that. It was hard getting her down the stairs to the car, she struggled, which is crazy considering she ran up them the night before and I could not get her to climb on to the back seat of the car, something she has always done with much enthusiasm. I held her as she slipped away. No longer in pain my darling girl, thank you for the years you have given me as a companion, as a family dog, as a show dog. You were my " good girl", never set a foot wrong, always did as I asked straight up, I never had to use " that voice" with you. You were gentle and sweet, never had a bad word to say to any person or any other dog. You always gave me everything you had in the show ring, you just wanted to please me. You made me so proud. I showed the other weekend after long break and missed having you on the end of the lead. After your diagnosis back in August my world came crashing down, why would this happen to you? I did my best in giving you every chance to fight it and sadly it did not give us the time I was hoping for but thank you, for enduring the weekly poking and prodding, if it was hard on you, you never let on, my strong beautiful girl, you would come bounding out like you'd just been visiting for the day. Thank you for the beautiful memories and Im sorry things have been in so much chaos in recent months and that our time together was not quite as stress free as I would have hoped.Rest easy my beautiful Lay Lay, my good girl. I love you with all my heart xxx http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=27619
  12. I roughly spend about $200 a month on food for 4 adult Bullmastiffs. I fee mainly chicken frames, whole and minced as their meat/bone source as its cheaper. They get lamb or roo on the odd occasion, plus chicken wings, necks, maryland and the odd marrow bone. They would get Maroow bones more often except they try and charge $8 a bone where I am . They also get Vets All Natural, veges, egg, sardines, yoghurt occasionally and have recently started using Black Hawk Dry as well for convenience purposes. It doesnt matter how I try and work it out I can never get it cheaper than $200 without losing the quality of the diet.
  13. That only Bullmastiffs that have a diamond shape patch of white fur on their chest are actually purebred. Thats the only way to tell that they are pure apparently *nods* ( and for those playing at home a small patch of white hair on the chest of the Bullmastiff is permissible but not desirable).
  14. I have 4 new babies as rising stars this year. They have their first shows this weekend, along with their brother who will be jetting off to his new home in the UK in a few weeks! I cant wait! Its been 4 months since I've been to a show as I've been a little busy raising these gorgeous babies. No recent pics but heres their DOL profiles :) Will get some updated pics this weekend! Valgerd Girl On Fire "Macey" Valgerd Man Of The Hour "Hunter" Valgerd Sexy And I Know It "Squish" Valgerd The Edge Of Glory "Bronte"
  15. I'm another that loves my booster bath from deals direct. I bought it for my Bullmastiffs and like it better than the hydro bath I used to have because I have better access to the dogs whole body and don't have to bend at all. Well worth the money!
  16. Just another update on my boy chase. It's been 20 months now since implant. I went to try get him collected again last week, we had a teaser bitch he did the right things but nothing eventuated. So we took some bloods so we could check his testosterone levels and the vets rang me the next day to tell me he had less testosterone levels than a desexed male dog. They rang the company that made the implant and they said 70% of dogs that have a 12 month implant are back to normal by 2 years and and 95% are back by 2.5 years and they recommend only using a 6 month implant on breeding animals. If that's not bad enough the repro specialist who initially saw chase with his penis issue is concerned that his problem will return when the implant wears off given that it took a good 15-20 minutes for him to " go down" after trying to get the collection, given that he supposedly has less testosterone than a desexed dog and he is concerned about having him collected when it wears off anyway stay tuned for another update down the track!
  17. Thank you Sandra! That sounds promising then. I have decided to run him on. He is also smaller than the other puppies but hes got something, that I feel if I let him go, Im going to regret it. Safest thing is to run him on I think and hope his chest comes good :) Thank you.
  18. I have a really nice puppy here, hes almost 9 weeks now, he was a swimmer and whist he got better his chest is still flat. Does anyone know if this will change? He does still like to lie on his chest with his elbows out to the side, which cant be helping, but he walks fine etc. On one hand I don't want to let him go but on the other I'm already keeping two pups and don't really need a third here.
  19. My boy had a 12 mth implant, it's been 19 mths now and I'm thinking it is starting to wear off, maybe.....testes appear a bit bigger but not back to normal. Tried to get a collection in November and no interest whatsoever. I have had two bitches here in season and ran him with them and he showed no interest at all.
  20. Im hearing you MonElite.... I have spent about $10,000 so far on my litter of 8 (god, if not more Ive given up counting)I have had 4 pups to the vet for illness or injury of some type(one was after hours over the last 8 weeks) and my pups are also sterilised before going (and one had a hernia repair, whilst under). I was close to calling it quits when the boy Im keeping had to be taken to the vet the other day as he was not well. Im not sure the stress and worry I feel every step of the way is worth it, even when they are seemigly happy and healthy, the worry and stress is still there, paranoid something will happen to them. I didnt and have not lost any pups in previous litters and its hard enough without that happening aswell, Im sorry you lost a beautiful baby. I have a pet pup for sale now and I spoke to a lady the other night, as soon as I mentioned the price, she went cold and tried to get off the phone. Very frustrating. It infuriates me that BYBers seemingly have litter after litter, no worries, or they just dont have the care factor I do.
  21. I am going for a song title theme for my puppies this time. But I need a name for the boy Im keeping, preferably pertaining to how good he is (I already have "sexy and i know it" for another pup lol) Some suggestions have been " Man of the hour", " all eyez on me" "turn my swag on" but Im not sure and thought I would put it out there to see if anyone else could come up with something. I just want it to stand out, he is something special this one and I want his name to reflect that ;0) Cheers :)
  22. How can I contact Wayrod? I have one pup flying to melb, one to hobart and 2 to the UK and wouldnt mind giving Wayrod a call. Ive already rang a couple fo others but I hate flying puppies and Im so paranoid about it so the fact he has so many recommendations makes me feel better :)
  23. The most annoying thing my big dogs do would have to be stepping on my feet, I often dont have shoes and socks on and itbloody hurts!! And sometimes it's like they twisttheir foot on you as they take off aswell just make it hurt as much as possible!! 55 kg of Bullmastiff on your toes or the instep of your foot is painful! The little dogs annoy me when they bark. Usually when the big dogs take off to investigate something ( but no barking) the little dogs hear the commotion and start yapping like crazy or they bark when someone pulls in the drive, including me. I don't like any of my dogs barking unnecessarily (and my big dogs are very good) but give me a big dog bark over a little yapper any day.
  24. Just an update, sorry I haven't been in here much. Little pup is fine. Lots of keeping him on his side has done the trick! He is 5 weeks now and such a cutie. Vet is trying to tell me that they mainly see swimmers in labs and that it sounds like my boy was just slow( roll eyes). I explained everything to him about how he was but no he still thinks he was a slow learner. I of course don't believe that for a minute! He was definitely not ok. I also rang them on a Saturday morning about my bitch getting mastitis. It was only early stages but being the weekend I didn't want to leave it. Of course they wanted to see her and brushed of my concerns which infuriated me. I still got my antibiotics though, I wasn't leaving without them! It's so frustrating, i haven't built up a rapport with them as I'm still new to the area and I hate being treated like I don't know what I'm talking about! Thank you all who responded to my post, Lil Squishy as he is known is just fine!
  25. If te difference between life and death is pet insurance, I will always have it. My girl would be dead by now if I didnt because I couldnt afford the thousands of dollars in treatment. In the past I was in a postioin where I had to decide whether I put down a (seemingly healthy )puppy or pay the thousands required to save him. I paid, because I was lucky enough to have a bit of money from the sale of a house, it turns out he needn't have been put down because he didnt have what they thought he did. The thought I nearly agreed to put him to sleep because of money, makes me sick, especially since it was unnecessary. I will never be without insurance again, I don't ever want to have to make that decision again. If I pay insurance for years without making a claim, so be it, at least I know I don't have to decide their fate because of money if something happens to them.
