  1. I've been trying to get my head around breeding and doing a bit of research but I'm a bit fuzzy on a few things.. So do most breeders select maitings to mainly create/carry-on just one specific line? Can someone elaborate on 'bettering the breed'? Is it to create 'perfection' in a species? If so, what is perfection? Is it just meeting the breed standard? Are the puppies sold from 'reputable' breeders just a by product of matings to improve the line? If a breeder felt like they had a good line going and quality dogs - is it so wrong to keep breeding for the purpose of providing people with quality pets and getting a small profit? Sorry for all the questions, I might sound a bit silly but I'm just trying to get my thoughts in order. Any input apreciated!
  2. So your a breeder yourself? I was actually offered a pup on mains just yesterday. But now after so many breeders have knocked me back - I have this nagging feeling it was too easy.. There are no shows where I live, next time I'm heading to the closest capital city I will definitely be lining my trip up with a show.
  3. When you say 'talk', do you mean face to face or by phone? Phone and email. I live in rural NSW with only one other breeder of poodles and she does toys so it is hard for me to have face to face contact. I can see where you are going though. I can imagine it would be hard to build trust just over the phone.
  4. I disagree, many breeders I've spoken to have simply said get yourself registered and then we will talk about a dog on mains. Even if you got a show quality/breeding quality bitch puppy tomorrow, you wouldn't be breeding from her for at least 2 years, so what's the rush? There is no rush, I've been in contact with some breeders on and off for two years. Asking questions, getting advice, looking for guidance, learning about showing and breeding , what to look for in a pup ect. It's not as if I've said hey, give me a dog to spit out some puppies ASAP.
  5. This is basically what I've said to them. That I'm looking for an addition to my family, I would like to get into showing and that down the track with more experience and guidance I'd like to consider becoming a reputable breeder. I've been talking to breeders on and off for 2 years.
  6. Does anyone think it would be worth approaching a breeder with lines I like for a show quality dog on limited and requesting a transfer to mains once I am registered and know that the dog is a good example of its breed/passed health tests/worth being bred from ect?
  7. I can't show without a dog.. I would love to show, and I have made this clear to breeders I have spoken to - I have some experience with grooming miniatures. Before i would even contemplate breeding the bitch I would show to measure up against the best of the breed and whether she would be suitable to breed from.
  8. It's all I have mentioned here because I'm not talking directly to a breeder I am interested in.. If I was just looking to pump out puppies for the fun of it, why would I bother becoming registered and finding a suitable dog on mains? Well that's obvious I have done this. That would be the breeders I have spoken to.
  9. I've grown up with poodles and had one of my own (miniature). I'm really interested in becoming a registered and respected breeder. I'm a member of DogsNSW and would like to take the exam and get my prefix when I can in 12 months. I've spoken to 10+ breeders about getting a pup and they are all happy to match me with a pup - until I mention that I would like her on the main register, then they say they can't help me. I could understand them being put off by the thought of backyard breeders ect. But I'm doing it the right way by becoming registered and not just breeding for a buck or anything. How is anyone new supposed start breeding? Any input appreciated.
