  1. I would also like to add, that when I contacted the pound direct about the two kittens I took, both CPR mentioned the two girls you are talking about AND the ranger also mentioned to me that they were there. So, to me, they did do what they could. It's not like they just said sure, take the two youngest kittens. They asked me specifically about the two girls, and also the male that was in there, but they can't force my hand. The RSPCA is LOADED with cats at the moment, and I'm pretty sure they can't take any more at the moment. Maybe they mentioned they would try, then realised, who knows, but I would not go so far as to say they did not try. Honestly, how many cats do you think the see go through there? They would have a fairly good indication of what will sell or be adopted, or what rescue groups tend to take on. Anyway, again, just my 2 cents.... Edit - T, you are right, the RSPCA here has a waiting list for surrenders that is from memory 6 months or so. That was last time I heard, it could be more, could be less now, not sure.
  2. Exactly. And I don't foster anywhere near as much as I would like to, but I will if I can. Maybe losing Gizmo so suddenly tugged at my heart strings a little, but these two are now safe, regardless.
  3. The highlighted bit. Maybe not traumatised, but my place is certainly not a quite place. I have read all the replies now, and I have not changed my stance. I still don't believe either of these girls would have done well in my home, and as harsh as it sounds, I do not have the time to put into these girls what they would need to have the potential to be affectionate, as you have stated. Of course, any dog needs a proper introduction to the cats, and I did that. I had a 5 week old kitten here up until a few weeks ago that the dog mothered. She was a feral that my brother found on the side of the road. I took her in and tried to nurse her back to health, of course after a visit to my vet. Sadly, I think we got to her just too late, as the little munchkin passed away a few days later. Whether the remarks are directed to me personally or not, and I truly do understand where you are coming from - you are passionate about what you do, and that is brilliant - just as much as you say to me to "read before I type" so to speak, for you to jump in and start about these kittens being taken above the other two girls without knowing the background or why, is just as unfair IMO. I get where you are coming from about going interstate, and I nearly did through a Sydney rescue, as that is where I have fostered the last few dogs from, but then I saw these kittens and stayed local. Not everyone is in a position to save the more difficult animals, regardless of how much they want to. And honestly, your last remark is just snide. They will stay here as long as they need to. If that means I adopt them, so be it. The only money paid to the pound for these kittens was the $70 for the two microchips.
  4. Nawwww! He is a little bit adorable!!! Beautiful boy :D
  5. I have not read all of the replies, but I just wanted to say that I am the foster carer that took the 9 week old kittens. I actually approached a rescue group for assistance as I knew it would be easier to get them out through a rescue than as a private resident. So it was actually my choice, not the rescue itself as to who got saved that day and who didn't - just wanted to clear that up. I don't feel like I need to explain my reasons for taking these two as opposed to the older ones, but I will. In the original rescue thread, it said that these girls were a bit shy and timid, and BOTH would probably need a quite home to go to. That is not my place. I have a dog who lives inside, and he just wants to play with the cats and dogs that come through here. For two traumatised young cats, that is not a good situation to put them in. Secondly, kittens suit me and my lifestyle better - they are a lot more adaptable, and they are also easier to keep. I honestly don't have the time to work with cats that need work, but with the kittens, just a few days of handling and some toys to play with, and they are running the place. They even put the dog in his place. These two other girls would not have coped with him, so would that be fair, for them to live in a house that would scare the s*** out of them, and for them to live a sorry existence, just so they were not PTS? In my personal opinion, no, but that's just me. And as far as I am aware, these kittens were on their own, their mum was not there. I probably would have taken her in too if she was.

    Bosco

I have not been on DOL for a long time, and I tossed and turned as to whether I should even post in here. It has been two months almost to the day that I lost my best friend in the whole world. Bosco had been battling cancer since late in 2013, and we did everything we could to try to help him, but the cancer was just too aggressive. My beautiful boy was given his wings on the 24 February 2014. He fought like a true champion, but the day came where he could not fight it anymore so I made the decision to end his pain. Probably the hardest, yet easiest decision I have ever made in my life. Hardest, because Bosco is all I had. He was my mate and my companion, and my first true dog from puppy hood through to his last day. But easy, only because I knew he was in pain and he deserved to rest. Some of you knew him well, some just knew of him, some have probably never heard of him. He will live forever in my heart, and I miss him dearly. Run free my beautiful boy. I hope you have met up with Loki Dog xxxx
  7. I'm so sorry Pers. Run free beautiful man
  8. Cold pressed organic coconut oil (from the health food shops) is also excellent for skin conditions. Not sure how much you would use for a little dog, but for a 20 kilo dog it is about 1 tablespoon per day. You can usually see an improvement within a couple of weeks. But make sure it's the genuine stuff :) Excellent, thanks Sheena! I will go and have a look for that too. Bozzy is 28kg, so I might try him on the 1 tablespoon if I can find it and see how he goes. Thanks for all the advice guys :) I have been trying to get rid of his dandruff for so long. His coat is fine, even shiny, but his skin is just yuck!
  9. Thanks T. I do occasionally, but I might try a bit more often. I have used sardines in oil before, and I also have fish oil tablets that I try to give him, but he does not eat them every day. I might try adding the sardines to every second meal or something and see how he goes :) Thank you!
  10. I have been trying to find something that suits Bosco for 7 years now!! He does not have a lot of issues as such, but his skin is awful! It is always flakey and dandruffy no matter what I try. I have not tried everything, but I have tried a few, cheaper kibbles, and the more expensive ones. I want to try something like the Black Hawke, Holistic or the Nutro or one of the other much higher quality brands, so I might have to see if I can get a small bag to try out.
  11. Sorry to hijack, but I am having issues with my boy and his reactivness to other dogs. I use a half check on him and I do use corrections, although I think I say no at the same time, so I will try to avoid that... At obedience class, there are the odd dogs he will lunge at in an attempt to have a go, and if we are walking and another dog happens to be walking by, he will do the same thing, only much stronger and he really, really wants to get to the other dog. I will work on my corrections with him, but would the game playing suggested by Erny maybe work with him? He is 7 on Friday, and has not always been this way. It has only been the last maybe 2 years he is getting progressivly worse, so I am not sure if it is age related or not, but I really want to try to work on it with him because I want to be able to go to classes without being an outcast because Bosco is behaving badly! I am not talking about him being able to run free with other dogs either - all I want is to be able to take him around other dogs on lead without worrying about whether he will be a pain.
  12. Hi huntrox, Nope, she is still looking. We are trying to get a few options sorted out for her, so hopefully she will find the perfect family soon. :)
  13. I ticked sometimes. Bosco is not a big licker, but I have taught him to 'kiss', so if I ask for a kiss, he will give me one. I don't rush to wash my face afterwards. I don't see it as a big deal, but that's just me. Oh, and Bozzy is the official plate cleaner too. One day my mum was over, and I gave him a plate to lick clean, then made a joke that the washing had been done, and went to put it back in the cupboard. I was quite surprised that she believed me  Of course I wash them properly before putting them away lol
  14. Awesome, thank you for that info trifecta! That is good to know :) I will get onto that tonight once I get home. Thanks again!
