    Crating A Puppy

Btw the Ddb is not classified as a giant breed , but large breed , they are not a terrier or herding dogs, they don't need a huge amount of exercise and especially exercising any large/ giant breed is detrimental to their health and development . This is one of the biggest issues that giant/ large breeders face is the over exercised young puppy!!!! They grow quickly and the body and mind shouldn't have to keep up becuse someone said so . All dogs should be socialized from the word go, and crating does not impede in that, what is the difference I ask between a dog crated and a dog confined in a bathroom / laundry during the day when people go to work? Actually inn my experience I have found crating a puppy from a young age is more beneficial than letting them have a run in the yard all day etc. how many times do you hear of young puppies injuring themselves and MUST be confined ? Surely a well trained crated dog is far more at ease than one who has been put in a bathroom? Being creative is what it is all about, unfortunately not all of us have the luxury of not working or friends who don't work, or we can't take them to work whatever. It doesn't mean we shouldn't own a dog !! We as breeders/experienced owners of the breed should know better than anyone what works and what doesn't and how they are best bought up. The breeder of this puppy didn't see it as a huge drama.

    Crating A Puppy

Hi Aso I am glad you have a great BF :) and i am so sorry you have gone through the nasties of the well meaning dog world and have gone to great lengths when you really didnt have to I also have Bordeauxs i have raised since babyhood and OMG i crated them Oh NO shoot me now :) I also breed bull terrier (miniatures) to which by 8 weeks of age are trained to spend time in their crates during the day when owners have to work and can only make it home at lunch time, i always insist if they only have half an hour to see if they can take an our to exercise them as they are let out for a break, with a short LITTLE walk. My Bordeaux crate is a huge metal crate well big enough for an adult to lay in :) I ask to those knocking Aso , how many of you crate your dog over night?? or do you get up every 2 hours to take them out for wee and exercise? FACT :Puppys _Babies which is what an 8 weeks old puppy is sleep most of the day/night only usually awake long enough to wee/poo/play then they crash out again. FACT : Bordeauxs are generally very lazy and sleep most of the time anyway, way more than my minis. They only need gentle exercise and play when they are awake , which isnt much.I always recommend the moment the owners arrives home from work the puppy should be let out to toilet and given a bit of time interacting with the family as you go about your business. Then they should have quality for play/SHORT walk and socialising. Mornings should also be of play and interacting. Tired puppies sleep and dont destroy or even mess. More effort is definately needed before work, lunch and after work but the end result is a well balanced member of the family who is a DOG. I have extremely well balance Miniatures and Bordeauxs as anyone who knows me and my dogs will attest to. They do not suffer any problems if they are managed correctly with good breeding and up bringing by both the breeder and new owner. Bordeauxs as per their breed standard are as follows "An ancient fighting dog, the Dogue de Bordeaux is gifted for guarding, which he assumes with vigilance and great courage, but without aggressiveness. A good companion, very attached to his master and very affectionate. Calm, balanced with a high stimulus threshold. The male normally has a dominant character." Therefor they should be socialised as much as possible from a young age but not to the detrimant of their safety EG parvo.
  3. Stay away from haltis and harnesses, IMHO they should be banned for most dogs and people, i have seen so many people with them and their dogs pulling them all over the place !!! I always recommend the check/choker BUT it must be used correctly and the correct size/weight for the dog and find an excellent obedience club to teach you to teach your dog. Prong collars are banned here in SA I have used them in the past before i became a SACA member and are an excellent (although horrible) looking device, they are much kinder to the dog and much easier to use. Bull Terriers are an extrememly stong and stubborn breed and if you are having problems at 8 months old wait till he hits 18 months !!!! I use check chains from 12 weeks of age with my babies , before then i only use a soft slip lead. You just cant go past a good trainer/club who actualy knows what they are doing and can show you most of all, put the hard work in now and you will be greatly rewarded Cheers
  4. I found it is not only the breed that may clash but also the group. I show bull terrier (miniatures) in group 2 and Dohue De Bordeaux in Group 6 way over the other side, i am usually clashing most times, not only for the breed but also for the group line up. I suggest you keep an eye on other groups and if there is a breed you like see how they go with clashing, it may take awhile but every show and every grounds are different.
  5. I am going for a look , as an aspirant judge i try and catch all group 2 specialtys :)Even if i am interstate i try and find some nearby
  6. Ok bumping this up as it is this weekend for any of those who are interested
  7. They do have a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=139...nc/337558466644 that is if you have facebook lol , they keep that pretty up to date
  8. Hoping to have a big entry , so will be well worth entering if you have a DDB, and worth coming along to find out more about the breed especially those judges , trainees , aspirants
  9. I also went to a "highly regarded" vet many years ago 3 times for the same thing on my dog, it was misdiagnosed 3 times by the same vet, 3 different things he came up with !!!!!. Sometimes highy regarded arent really that imho. Having said that, a revisit may be on the cards for a further investigation if the vet is worth their salt they will give you the time of day to investigate. Having said that anti inflam and pain killers are only usefull for the interim period of healing, his management at home is crucial, it is like a person that has sprained something it can take a long time and you are allowed to do this and not that etc. Mathew Condon is brilliant i used to go to him for my dogs back when he first started out until i moved i would not hesitate to get you dog in to see him
  10. Thanks Julie , it is just exactly what the OP has written that has me worried, one of the BIGGEST problems owners face with things like OCD is the misadvice they are given and the Unproffesional (proffessional ) help they get , which only leads to an even greater disaster. A "spinner" in the sense of the word doesnt neccessarily mean it spiinning like crazy , it can be in a mild form just a few turns to an extreme for , spinning like crazy and not stopping for anything but powerful sedatives. I have seen/heard of dogs biting their own tails off, feet cut and bleeding, legs chewed to the bone. this in many differetn breeds not just bullys Please take a look at the site and join the yahoo group and have a read , see if the sypmtoms are the same
  11. Tail biting, spinning, in the same catagory even fly biting, take a look at the web site . I have heard/seen OCD dogs bite their tails down to stumps, bitches bite their teats to nothing, all different extremes I suggest proffessional help NOW and with some one expereinced in OCD
  12. It is not a habit but ocd. Google bull terrier neurological disorder and you will find info. There is also a bull terrier yahoo group dedicated to this problem. It occurs in many other breeds also like shepards. Amputation won't do a thing Cheers Julie
  13. Hi SPudd Bullies commonly get eye snot that gets crusty, Could be conjuctivitus or soemthing like dirt in there irritating it, get the vet to have a look and let us know Cheers Julie
  14. Showdog I for one am definately in to let the breeder know first , I am a breeder myself and am on call 24/7 for those people who buy my dogs for the life of my dogs, but i will let you in on a secret in this country (and not only this country) and that is out of all the registered Dogue breeders i wouldnt trust 95% of them !!!!!!! Unfortunately though these so called great breeders are also great talkers !!!!! i have seen in the past consistantly blatant lies told to puppy buyers and when those buyers have contacted them they have done the walk and talk and those buyers dont know which way to turn and lose interest and dissapear. I am so totally annoyed by it all it does nothing for the breed and nothing for the poor owners that have paid the big bucks. I have seen dogs LIMPING and totalyy unsound in the ring, very poor examples of the breed you name it !!! told there is nothing wrong with the dog they should look like that, that isnt a problem, oh yes breed from it you can use my stud dog and then you to can sell all on Main register for a high price etc etc I have pride in this breed although it technically is not my breed i mainly have , but i have a great passion for it and it deserves a lot lot more than it gets. I am more than willing to help those new owners of Dogues to start showing, no matter who bred it ! as my state is very small and not many breeders here , most are bought from interstate and flown across I show every now and then, mainly in the winter months (it is me that hates showing in the heat lol) but only to happy to help. I hope for Emileighs sake that her puppy was bought from a good and decent breeder and not one of the 95% ,but as having paid a greater price for pick of litter bitch that has an umbilical hernia she was not notified about and not an undershot bite has me a tad worried and surely that would even ring alarm bells for you ? Emileigh dont ever be scared to ask anything about everything Cheers Julie
  15. Hi Emileigh I still do show Dogues well my girl anyway when i can be bothered to run from group 2 to group 6 lol. One of the most important virtues on a Dogue is the undershot bite !!!! but having said that many many judges do not have any idea. I have 2 dogues , one is probably the best example you will ever see, not only his mouth but head shape. the standard reads for jaws" the lower jaw curves unpwards, the chin is well marked" and the mouth states "Undershot (the undershot condition being a characteristic of the breed). " but for some unknown reson judges continually ignore these important facts !!!! If you wish to see him look up moloscyg kiss the girls on my website. But his dog is very very far and few and when judges judge him he looks alien to them and they think it is wrong I have seen overshot dogs even been rewarded !!! Your puppy should be undershot , from the picture in your avatar , i feel she has no curve to her lower jaw and is long in nose , but very cute all the same For showing many things are considered, structure is also extremely important, temperament etc. Did you buy her to show? I dont know what shows i will be entered in for the next few months as usually it is too hot to show , but if you like i can let u know and you can come down with her and see what the show scene is all about Cheers julie
