  1. Doea citronella oil work. I know dogs hate the smell. Is it harmful to them?
  2. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. We are trying to do the best by the dogs and anything that makes their poo orange/red (meatybites) I figure cant be too good for them. We have a couple of wholesale places and I am going to speak to them and see what deals we can come up with. Thanks everyone.
  3. Hi Jaybee, It is in our budget and I have the choice over what sort I buy. At the moment and forever the dogs have been getting meatybites. I am not a big fan of meaty bites and I was after another cheap alternative that was reasonable quality. The budget has been based on meaty bites so the change needs to be around the same price. As we all know COuncils dont like spending money on the pounds. I have been here just over a year and I am just slowley being allowed to make changes. Progress is very slow...... I guess the problem with Griffith is that we are limited for choice. The major wholesale companies here sell coprice, meatybites, pedigree pal, bonnie working or some other brand I have never heard of. I was trying to figure out the better of the evils........ Coprice is actually a local company so am thinking of sending over a nice request letter.....
  4. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Sometime ago I complied a list of all doggy food retailers with the idea of asking for sponsorship or something along those lines but I figured no one would be interested in smaller countryCouncil pounds. I will definately get onto it and give it a go. It cant hurt to try.... I will let you know how I go Thanks again Joanne
  5. Hi everyone, I saw WoofBix in Big W on the weekend for just under $12 a bag. Does anyone know anything about them? I am looking for a pound alternative to meatybites......Any suggestions at a reasonable price would be great. I am also looking into Coprice. Does anyone know anything about it? Meatybite turn their poo the same colour as the biscuts. It kind of concerns me regarding what colours are in there. Please dont turn this into a raw food vs dry food debate. Whilst appreciate the information on a normal basis the pound is not the ideal place for a BARF diet. Dry food is the best as far as cost, storage etc. Whilst I know dogs shouldnt just be on dry food I dont have much choice. I dont think my boss would appreciate a huge bill for raw meat I do what I can as far as getting bones to them out of my own personal money but I still need a dry food recomendation. Anyone who has worked in a pound knows that Councils are not too keen on spending money on them....... Thanks
  6. My vet in Sydney used to send them home the same day but in Griffith they keep them in overnight. I guess it depends on the vet. My kitten is in getting done today and I would have assumed he would be home today but they are keeping him in overnight. Maybe they like to watch them for complications or something.....
  7. The way I look at it is that 'wild' dogs followed man and scavenged food. They became adept at eating whatever man left over or was prepared to throw at them. Hence the beginning of the domesticated dog. Before the advent of commercial dog food dog's were often fed only the left overs from the family meal and perhaps a bone or two. Ask your grandma what the family dog's were fed. They survived and often lived long and illness free lives. They are extremely adaptable in regards to food. Mum still tells the story of boiling up the ox heart for my Grandmothers dog. Grandma used to buy it, boil the crap out of it, and then serve it up. Thats what Ringo the collie cross ate for years. He ended up being PTS aged about 12 with arthritis (this is way before sashas blend etc). Ringo also got dry food, Chum, cooked chop bones and whatever else came off the table It definately comes down to what YOUR dog does well on. Mine are fed a mix of both and do well on it. When I tried mixing veges etc in they just got pushed to the side and not eaten. I figure if my dog can bury a bone and dig it up two weeks later and eat the maggots off it whilst I nearly vomit from the smell then I am going to let him eat dry food with his raw stuff. He must have guts of steal and his poo looks healthy. Its the same sort of debate as what type of raw meat you should give your dog. Mine love roo meat but do a LOT better on lamb or beef. Their coats are heaps shinier and they are a lot happier. Dogs are like people in that some do a lot better on certain types of food compared to others.
  8. My boys are fed a dry and raw food combo which they do really well on. They get good quality raw meat. I have a great butcher who actually gives good meat scraps. They also get chicken necks, wings etc from Leonards and lots of bones depending on whats available. We are also lucky to have the Steggles factory near by which does really cheap chicken if you go to the factory (2kg breast for $5) I am having trouble getting bulk dog food in Griffith. (I have 3 large dogs so need to buy in bulk). All I can get is Bonnie Working, meaty bites and meaty bites working or Coprice (which i had never heard of). I dont want to feed working food due to energy levels but I noticed Pal have a new range that comes in bulk. Its in a black and purple packet and has NO colours etc. It is the same brown the eukanuba is. I thought I would give it a go and they seem to love it. I think it is only a new release thing but was a reasonable price. I think off the top of my head I paid $80 for a bag of puppy and a bag of light both around the 17kg price. It smells the same as eukanuba and has the same look and feel (if that makes any sense) I havent noticed this brand and packaging in the supermarket. Has anyone else used this one......or has anyone heard of Coprice? I used to always use Eukanuba but the only way i can get it down here is in really small bags at the vet. This is not ideal with a ridgeback/lab cross, a BC/kelpie/rottie cross and a new large cross pup
  9. My dogs ADORE canned food but they only get it maybe once a month as I find it makes their poo really runny. They love the Pal loaf style which I know is not good for them which is why they rarely get it. Someone once told me canned food is great for getting weight off dogs as it goes right through them. They obviously didnt have to pick up the poo in the back yard! Does anyone know anything about the roll things that you buy in the supermarket. It (like smackos) must have some kind of dog drug in it cause my boys inhale it. I have bought it as a last resort occasionally.
