  1. No suggestion from me. I am having the same problem with my Sheltie pup. She always toilets on the grass, but if it is raining or the grass is wet, she does it on the pavers on the verandah. When I take her out for a walk she does her business on the grass but during the day when I am not home, it always ends up on the pavers when it is raining or even just wet, she never does this when it is dry. If I am outside with her, she will pace around and whine when she needs to go because she knows I will put her on the grass if she tries it on the pavers. She does eventually go on the grass if I am there but not when she is on her own.
  2. Selvita is a natural vitamin, mineral, protein and amino acid liquid supplement with omega 3 & 6 for shiny coats. I feed chicken wings, BARF patties and some Supercoat Puppy in her treat ball. As soon as the Supercoat runs out she will be getting Nutro or Eagle Pack in her treat ball. She also gets cooked liver, beef, lamb, chicken etc. chopped up finely as training treats. If we go to training, her treats replace 1/2 of the BARF patty amount she would get for dinner. I am just not sure that she is getting everything she needs, particularly as we go to training 3x a week and she gets the cooked meat instead of the patty.
  3. Does anyone use Selvita supplement? What do you think of it? I am considering using it but would like some feedback first.
  4. I currently have a treat pouch for training my pup but it has a draw string to close. This was fine until I am now running around as much as her during training and the treats come out. If I draw the string it takes too long to get the treats out. I am considering getting a BlackDog treat pouch - does anyone have one? What is your opinion of them?
  5. Hi guys, where do I find out info about these workshops? Is there a central website or do each of these people have their own sites, or is there a "secret club" for those in the know ?
  6. Thanks poodle wrangler. I have phoned my vet and am waiting for them to call me back, hopefully they will be able to answer some more of my questions.
  7. I am looking at a puppy today who is 9 weeks old and has been at the vets due to coccidia. She is now back with the breeder and is back to her old self. She is still getting some antibiotics. I have done a seach on coccidia but am unsure whether I should buy this puppy or not. The original buyer pulled out of the sale because of the coccidia. Advice please !!! I am not familiar with coccidia. Are there likely to be long term implications? Are there concerns about her being contagious to our old border collie? Anything else I need to know?
  8. He was having so much fun I had tears in my eyes seeing him enjoy himself so much. I wish this had been around when I had my Sheltie. Maybe the next one. Well done Jonty you lucky little pup STOP?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? NO WAY, THIS IS WAY TOO MUCH FUN!!!!!
  9. Hi everyone, I have been considering feeding nutro dog food for a while as it gets a lot of support on this forum. I bought a small bag a while ago and the dogs loved it. My dillema is the large amount of rice and rice products in the food. I am looking at the Adult Large Breed and the first ingredient is dried lamb meat which is great, however the next four ingredients are ground rice, rice flour, rice bran and rice gluten. This does not sound like a great diet for a dog. I am hesitant to pay fairly big $$$ for so much rice. I know many of you have dogs that do very well on this product and mine may do too, but is it ok to feed something with such a large amount of rice and rice products in it? Some dogs do well on supermarket canned and dry diets, but I do believe there is a price to pay in the long run. Therefore I don't believe that the adage "if your dogs do well on it, stick to it" is always reliable for their long term health. I feed vegies, pet mince, a small amount of coprice working dog (also rice based but far inferior to and of course cheaper than nutro), yoghurt, vitamin C & E, fish oil. Twice a week they get sardines, two other nights they get an egg and once a week they get liver. They also eat mostly chicken bones daily and a soup bone twice a week. I would like to cut out the pet mince due to the fattiness and poor quality (I often find minced up plastic bags in it and have to throw it out), and replace it with a better dry. I would still continue to feed the other ingredients. Nutro is readily available locally and I would like to feed it but would like your thoughts on the high rice content. Cheers.
  10. Thank you Bloss344, that is pretty much what I thought. I am feeding mostly BARF with a small amount of dry for the young dog. I really appreciate your help and effort .
  11. I don't have digital kitchen scales and one dog weighs 26kg and the other 22kg and growing. They get fish oil and I want to start feeding the flax seed oil, hence the need to supplement with vitamin E.
  12. Bloss344 - I went to the produce today to look at the bucket that my vitamin E came out of and there is no mention of Selenium so I seem to have got that wrong. It says that there is d-alpha tocopheryl acetate at 1600IU/40g. Is this enough information for you to be able work out how much to give in teaspoons?
  13. The staysound website is down but I did find out that the vitamin E has added Selenium. Is that appropriate to feed to dogs?
  14. bloss344 I believe the vitamin E is the value plus brand as their vitamin C definitely is. I will confirm but think it is safe to say that is the one. You are a fountain of information, thank you so much for all your help . Feeding is sooooo confusing !!! Sorry, I just checked with the produce and the brand is Stay Sound and there is no info regarding how many mg per gram of powder. I will check to see if they have a website.
  15. I bought the powder in a clear plastic bag from the produce. I may have to ask to see the bulk bag it came from. It may only have horse dosage amounts on it.
  16. Can anyone help with the Vitamin E teaspoon dosage? All the information I can find relates to mg (my scales don't weigh such minute amounts) and IU. I feed fish oil to help the old dog with arthritis but really need to add some Vit. E. My fish oil capsules do not have Vit E in them.
  17. Does anyone know how the IU in Vitamin E would convert to teaspoons? I have Vit. E powder but have no idea how much to feed. I want to add it because I feed fish oil capsules and believe I need to add Vit. E?
  18. What level of obedience training is required to attend this workshop?
  19. Thanks for that Mel I will PM. Generally I just try to ignore the mouthing until I find a method that may work .
  20. A behaviourist may be what I need - I am really new to this. Any suggestions anyone? My Sheltie's name was Levi. He passed away earlier this year aged 11 - I lost him to cancer . He was trialling when he was about 2 I think (I would have to check his trophies) and won every trial he entered including his sweepstakes. Once we hit open, he decided he didn't like it anymore and refused to retrieve the dumbell .
  21. Mrs D - Rani has quite a few issues to work through and I need more specialised and knowledgeable attention than a general obedience club can give me. I also trained at Logan Dog Obedience some years ago and worked my Sheltie right through his CD title with the help of the instructors there. No offence to any club is intended. Tilly - I feel that perhaps it would be better for Rani if we had some one-on-one training at home to help build both our confidence and before venturing out in the scary world of group work. Rani is also not going to be fully vaccinated until mid-August and our needs are fairly urgent . I know that initially I asked for an obedience course, and this was in response to Val Bonney's advice. I really think such and environment may be too daunting for Rani until she becomes more confident in me as her 'fearless leader' :D . Since we cannot go out for another month at least, I am going to have to find someone to help me at home. Our greatest issue at the moment is excessive mouthing. She mouths everytime anyone touches her especially me, she jumps up and bites me in the arms and in the legs and feet while I am walking. All this is non-aggressive, but nonetheless painful and disrespectful and very frustrating. My arms and legs are covered in bruises :D . I would like to build a relationship with her and feel that by starting to implement obedience strategies this may develop. I am currently using the triangle of temptation and she is doing very well with that, but her general behaviour is not yet improving. Bearing in mind that I have had this dog for only two weeks and she spent a month in the pound, being adopted and returned twice. Pardon me for rambling on, I hope I am making some sense ?
  22. Thanks molasseslass, I definitely need more than a CCCQ obedience club which is what we will move on to once our issues are a little more controlled. Do you have personal experience of either of the two other organisations? Ideally I am looking for personal experiences people have had rather than picking one out of the yellow pages .
  23. I have recently adopted a lovely 7 month old German Shepherd from the pound. She was surrendered because she was too boisterous (ie. we couldn't be bothered training her  ) and was then adopted and returned to the pound twice for the same reason. Needless to say, she is boisterous!!! She is a lovely natured girl who has no idea how to behave appropriately but learns really fast and is very willing. Having said that, I have always had my dogs since they were puppies and re-training a 'teenager' is somewhat beyond my level of ability . I need some help in training her and am looking for recommendations of courses or training schools on the Southside of Brisbane. I have contacted Val Bonney with an outline of Rani's behaviour and she recommended I bring her along for an assessment and then enrol in an 8 week basic obedience course. This sounds fine except that it would take me over an hour to get there and the cost of petrol would be a killer ! Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of any other good training providers on the Southside of Brisbane?
